Advance Praise for The Accelerating Universe

""""The Accelerating Universe"" is not only an informative book about modern cosmology. It is rich storytelling and, above all, a celebration of the human mind in its quest for beauty in all things.""
--Alan Lightman, author of Einstein's Dreams

""This is a wonderfully lucid account of the extraordinary discoveries that have made the last years a golden period for observational cosmology. But Mario Livio has not only given the reader one clear explanation after another of what astronomers are up to, he has used them to construct a provocative argument for the importance of aesthetics in the development of science and for the inseparability of science, art, and culture.""
--Lee Smolin, author of ""The Life of the Cosmos""

""What a pleasure to read! An exciting, simple account of the universe revealed by modern astronomy. Beautifully written, clearly presented, informed by scientific and philosophical insights.""
--John Bahcall, Institute for Advanced Study

""A book with charm, beauty, elegance, and importance. As authoritative a journey as can be taken through modern cosmology.""
--Allan Sandage, Observatories of the Carnegie Institution of Washington

From Publishers Weekly
One of the most important recent discoveries in cosmology--and science in general--is that the expansion rate of the universe is not staying steady or getting slower, as most scientists had assumed; on the contrary, it is accelerating. Something is counteracting gravity and making it so that in billions of years, the universe will be an even vaster, emptier realm, filled with stars and galaxies flickering out one by one until there is only darkness. In this book, Livio, a senior scientist at Baltimore's Space Telescope Science Institute, evaluates current theories about the universe in terms of whether or not they are "beautiful." Livio defines beauty for purely scientific purposes: a beautiful scientific theory, he explains, must be symmetric and simple (reductionist), and it must follow the Copernican principle that man is not the center of the universe--it need not be elegant. Livio's discussion, however, carefully constructed (like a well-laid-out mathematical proof), certainly is elegant. Readers who only hazily remember high school math and science classes will enjoy the author's clear, jargon-free explanation of such complicated astronomical concepts as inflationary theory, "pocket" or multiple universes and the anthropic principle. Although the opening chapters are weighed down with extraneous references to art and literature, once Livio gets into his subject, he employs such references more selectively. Any educated individual interested in current theories about the past and future of the universe will want to read this lucid book. 10 b&w photos and drawings. (Mar.)

From Library Journal
Like Donald W. Goldsmith's The Runaway Universe (LJ 1/00), this is a survey of modern cosmology, with an emphasis on recent observations that the universe is expanding at an ever-accelerating speed. But while Goldsmith focuses on the techniques of astronomical research, Livio, a scientist at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, concentrates on scientific aesthetics. He argues that a fundamental theory of the universe must be beautiful--symmetrical, reductionist, and compliant with the generalized Copernican principle (i.e., assuming no special circumstances)--even though an eternally expanding universe appears to violate the requisites for scientific beauty. Along the way, Livio often digresses, recounting sometimes irrelevant anecdotes about astronomers or works of art. Superbly accessible explanations of physical and astronomical concepts compensate, however. More appropriate for general readers than Goldsmith's book, this is recommended for public and academic libraries.

From Booklist
At least since Copernicus exulted over the beguiling simplicity of a sun-centered planetary system, scientists have counted the beauty of a theory as strong evidence of its truth. But beauty offers little guidance to the astronomers now scrambling to revise theories battered by new evidence of a universe expanding with undreamed-of speed. No one better understands this disturbing new evidence than Livio, who helps direct research conducted with the Hubble Telescope. With laudable clarity, he explains how the latest data are straining the long-standing assumptions of cosmologists, who are now forced to contemplate a universe in which the energy in empty space is unexpectedly dominating matter in pushing the galaxies toward frigid oblivion. Far more than a puzzle for specialists, the struggle to re-interpret the cosmos raises fundamental questions about the human craving for order: Does this craving reflect deep cosmic harmonies that helped create our species? Or does it simply defy an irreducible chaos that we would rather not confront? Livio probes these questions with a daring sufficient to satisfy the hungriest curiosity. Bryce Christensen

Livio delivers.
By Fernando Garcia
Theoretical scientists are usually the engine behind new discoveries, which leaves the burden of proof to others who deal with the real world. The discoveries of 1998 have turned the situation around in cosmology for the first time in many years. Observation has shaken the foundation of theoretical physics and leapt into the lead. When this happens you have to retrench to original tenets and start building again, since your former building of thought has collapsed around you. In that, Livio's solution of defining beauty in a theory as three basic assumptions from which to build, falls exactly on the mark. I liked particularly the insights into Einstein's theories and how they actually help explain the possibility of negative gravity. I missed a good account of the supernova 1A discovery which made possible the expansion observations, but if you are an informed layperson who wants to experience the suject of expansion, this is your book. The success does not continue, however, when theology is brought in the ecuation. That subject is for other areas of human endeavor and cosmologists are as bad as any other scientist when crossing over. All in all, this is a great book and will give you a good understanding of the new cosmology.

Will the Beauty of the Final Theory Be Hold out?
By Tatsuo Tabata
A cosmologist and art fanatic, Mario Livio, elegantly tells the general reader about the recent observational finding that the expansion of the universe is speeding up contrary to the long-held belief of slowing-down expansion. He stresses the effect of this finding on the beauty of the fundamental theory of the universe; or rather the central theme of the book is that beauty.
Livio clearly explains his requirements for the beauty in physical and cosmological theories: symmetry, simplicity, and the Copernican principle (we are nothing special). According to the author, the tentative discovery of the accelerating expansion of the universe poses a frightening challenge to the beauty of the final theory by raising difficult questions about the non-zero value of the cosmological constant (or the energy of the vacuum). From the viewpoint of the Copernican principle Livio rejects resorting to the anthropic principle for giving a quick answer to those questions. The story told about the recent finding of extrasolar planets is intriguing and helps strengthen the basis of the expanding Copernican principle.
The book is so good that I am tempted to write all of its minor deficiencies I have noticed: The explanation of the inflationary model is not very understandable as the author himself admits in the book. The author's bottom line for Carter's argument about the rarity of extraterrestrial intelligent civilization is rather confusing, because the latter's argument seems simply wrong due to the contradiction of his conclusion to his two-possibility reasoning, aside from the dubiousness of his crucial assumption at the start. In the last chapter Livio writes about Wheeler's view of the participatory universe, but its distinction from the anthropic principle, if any, is not made clear. The first name of the Japanese physicist and cosmologist Katsuhiko Sato is misprinted as Katsuoko. It would have been much better to include bibliography of the books cited and the photographs of many paintings referred to.

About the Author
LEONARD M. GREENE, a member of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, has patented more than 100 inventions, including the stall-prevention device now essential safety equipment on all aircraft, which is credited with saving thousands of lives. His company, which for half a century has done substantial business with Boeing, recently recognized that relationship by assigning to them the patent rights on a new type of supersonic plane that is 50 percent faster than the Concord-and flies without creating a sonic boom.

Interesting but fluffy
By Stephen Funk
This is an easy to read book by the inventor of several aeronautical instruments. The author is also a prolific "idea" guy, and he shares many of his undeveloped ideas throughout the book. Dr. Greene goes into just a little of the detail behind his invention of the airplane stall indicator, his crowning achievement and apparently the source of his wealth. After that, the author covers many invention case studies in a very cursory and story telling way. The stories are entertaining but will not give more than a peek at what goes into the "Art of Innovation".
Much of the book is self-serving and reads like a memoir at times. There are many stories about how the author was with his family on a fantastic vacation and came up with a great invention. The stories continue to include his private plane, summer home, son's helicopter, private sail yacht, etc. Greene is very forward about showing you the riches and great life that can accompany Inventorship. He uses the book to also link politics with Inventorship by briefly plugging his book on The National Tax Rebate as an example of using Inventiveness for social issues.
Some of Greene's invention examples allocate himself a little more credit than seems reasonable. In one parable, Greene claims to have had a chat with a Princeton Professor after a lecture that resulted in major revisions of the world's cyclotrons and moved particle physics research to a new level. The kicker is Greene claims that the fundamental principle for this cyclotron design occurred to him while playing with his trains when he was seven years old.
Buy this book for the corny and sometimes funny stories. Buy this book for insight into an octogenarian who has had an impact on the aeronautical industry. Buy this book to get a few nuggets of wisdom about bringing a product to market. Don't buy this book for a "how-to" on inventing.

Imagination and Necessity equals Invention
By hugh j.b. cassidy
From the beginning of Leonard Greene's book, "Inventorship, the Art of Innovation", Walter Cronkite writing in the Foreword, writes about one of my favorite writers of yesterday. Cronkite tells the reader a World War Two incident involving a reporter friend of his, Jimmy Cannon. Cronkite and the other American reporters could not get by the Russian Guards because they had no proper ID. Cannon got by the Russian Guards and spent two days with them before returning to Cronkite and the American Third Army. The Question was "How did Cannon do it?" Leonard Greene provides the answer for his readers in his book: think about the problem at hand, and use "the art of innovation." Jimmy Cannon's solution: thinking and innovation. Cannon showed the Russian Guards "his Texaco credit card with the oil company's big red star on its back. The Guards couldn't read English, but the soviet symbol was enough, and pass him through they did." Leonard Greene's new book is full of wonderful ideas of how inventions come into being. He proves in an intelligent and interesting way that necessity is not necessarily the the only mother of invention; "Imagination is." During World War Two, when this writer was a young sailor. one of the things that amazed me was how in God's name did those planes take off and land on aircraft cariers, especially, the carriers we called the "baby carriers." Leonard's Inventions/solutions: Stall Warning Devices for landing; speed bumps at the end of the runway for take-offs. The Elder President Bush knows their value from his WW11 South Pacific flying days. Leonard Greene's book is facinating reading; it should be required reading with Peter Drucker's books in University/College Business Schools.I give Greene's book the Highest Recommendation.

Very interesting stories from a prolific inventor
By John C. Dunbar
If you are at all interested in the invention process then you'll should get this book to read on the actual processes that an inventor went through in invention after invention.
At first I thought the author was a little egocentric... talking about all of his inventions. Then I realized that he was truly a profilic inventor. His method of telling us about the invention process was to illustrate each of the methods he used with real stories of inventions. Stories that happened (mostly) to him.
It is very easy to read, and the author went out the way to get an artist to support his points with illustrations. As I read the book I became intrigued with all of his inventions. After a while I started saying to myself... "Gosh, I can't believe he invented this under those conditions."
Particularly interesting was his analysis of what the people on the Titanic could have done to save the ship.
I think there are better academic books about the invention process out there... but there are few that offer a look inside the mind of someone who invented so many products.
John Dunbar

Good classroom in a book for newcomers
By J Bucknoff, PMP
This is a surprisingly useful book for newcomers to Visual Basic.NET. Buy it for the book, itself, not for the online presentation.
The book comes with an accompanying website with audio/visual presentation for each chapter consisting of a PowerPoint presentation along with audio. Warning: You can only view the presentation with a high speed broadband connection. Dial-up can only get the audio and sometimes not even the audio. The online presentations are fine, but the value comes from the book itself, not the online presentation.
I usually shy away from books with phrases like "In a weekend", "in 24 hours", "hour-a-day crash course" etc. You really can't learn a new programming language in a few hours. HOWEVER, THESE BOOKS ARE AN EXCEPTION. The authors don't try to convince you that you can expect to learn VB.NET in a weekend. If you do all the lessons (some of which may take a bit more than an hour) plus try to do a few original applications on your own, from scratch, you WILL get a very good foundation of the subjects being taught. It will take about 4 - 6 weeks to go through the entire book (not 24 hours or a weekend, like other books promise), based on 60 - 90 minutes a day 5 or 6 days a week.
I own both the VB.NET and the ASP.NET (which is also VB.NET based) books and recommended them to my students who wanted to learn VB.NET.
This books is designed for people who don't have the money or the time to attend a live, in-class course on the VB.NET. The authors anticipate, in advance, some of the questions you might ask to a live instructor if you were learning VB.NET in a classroom environment. According to the authors, they have taken their own experience as instructors and put that experience into the book. It works pretty well.
Two caveats:
(1) the book doesn't cover everything about .NET or about VB.NET or about the .NET Framework. It's provides a self-study, introductory course on VB.NET. If you complete the book, then you will be in good shape to take on some more advanced topics such as the details of ADO.NET (an entire subject in itself, check out Murach Publisher's Murach's VB.NET Database Programming with ADO.NET by Doug Lowe, Anne Prince - ISBN: 1890774197 for that) and ASP.NET (check out Wiley Publisher's ASP.NET in 60 Minutes a Day by Glenn Johnson, ISBN: 0-471-43023-4 for that or Mike Murach Publisher's Murach's ASP.NET Web Programming with VB.NET by Doug Lowe, Anne Prince ISBN: 1890774200 for that).
(2) The online presentations are only available to broadband subscribers. However, even without the videos, this would be a great introductory book for beginners who cannot take a classroom course on Web development using VB.NET and ASP.NET.

An excellent book let down by poor support
By A Customer
Visual Basic.Net in 60 Minutes reads well from the beginning. The tutorial-style presentation is an excellent idea, with each chapter supported by an introductory streaming video presentation by Bruce Barstow, hosted on Wiley's web site. The only problem is that the video intros don't work after chapter 3 which is a real let-down. Wiley's "Technical Support" has, as yet, produced no response, despite repeated emails plus a not inexpensive international phone call to have this issue rectified.
In summary, an excellent read for a programmer with some VB experience moving across to this VERY different world of VB.NET, but will disappoint anyone intending to use the advertised on-line lectures until (if/when??) Wiley get their act together & get these videos working beyond chapter 3!

Industrial Organic Chemicals, 2nd Edition, by Harold A. Wittcoff, Bryan G. Reuben, Jeffery S. Plotkin

Broadly describes the essential topics of the organic chemicals industry
In the past two decades, the organic chemicals industry has undergone unprecedented restructuring, complicated feedstock problems, and massive shifts of capacity to developing countries. In the developed world, specialty chemicals have gained increasing significance. Although the fundamentals of organic chemical and polymer production have remained largely constant, one needs to be aware of the economic, structural, and political changes in the industry in order to understand its current state.
This much-expanded Second Edition of Industrial Organic Chemicals presents the various technologies and processes involved in the organic chemicals industry as an organized body of knowledge. It describes the chemistry of the seven basic building block chemicals and their derivatives, how they are manufactured, their economic importance, uses, and associated environmental issues. Also covered are two topics essential to an understanding of modern industrial chemistry-catalysis and polymer synthesis.
Key additions to this Second Edition include discussion of:
* Sustainability and "green" chemistry
* Dendrimers
* Metallocenes
* Chemicals in biotechnology
* Specialty chemicals for pharmaceuticals, electronics, fire retardation, fuel additives, foods, and other uses
* Economic, political, and social concepts for understanding future directions of the industry
Industrial Organic Chemicals, Second Edition presents the chemistry of both large-scale and specialty products while taking into account important political, environmental, and economic considerations. It provides both a narrative account of the evolution of today's industry from the viewpoint of authors intimately involved with the changes, and an essential reference for chemists, chemical engineers, plastics engineers, petroleum engineers, managers, executives, and policy makers working in and with the organic chemical industry.

Suitable as a gift to oneself or to any organic chemist, suitable as a college textbook
By Tom Brody
INDUSTRIAL ORGANIC CHEMICALS, 3rd ed., by Wittcoff, Reuben, and Plotkin, is an 807-page book about organic chemicals. The book is printed on fine-quality white paper (not on cheap paper). Almost every other page has a chemical structure, or a series of chemical structures occurring in a pathway of organic synthesis. There are a few black and white photographs, and these include a photo of a small container barge on the Seine, an ISO tank in a carriage, an ISO tank being loaded on railroad cars, an ISO tank on a truck (pages 81-83). The front cover has a color photo of some men in a chemical plant. And that’s it for the photos. A small number of diagrams are found, as follows. Page 84 has a line drawing of a cross section of a tanker ship. Apparatus used in chemical engineering are shown in drawings of a steam cracking furnace (p. 107); crude oil distiller (p. 98); steam naphtha cracker (page 109); and four different reactors that use catalysts (page 645). Page 533 has a flow chart showing conversion of corn starch to glucose, and glucose to lactic acid, etc., etc. A few pie charts are found, for example, a pie chart showing the customers of chemicals (consumers, health care, agriculture, textile mills, mining, etc.) (page 25), and a pie chart showing the end-uses of toluene in Europe (solvents, benzene, xylene) and in the United States (solvents, gasoline, xylene, benzene) (page 376).

The book has twenty chapters:

Abbreviations. About 150 abbreviations, such as “Deep Catalytic Cracking” and “PolyBrominated Biphenyls” are identified.

Introduction

(1) Evolution of organic chemicals industry
(2) Globalization of the chemical industry
(3) Transporting chemicals
(4) Chemicals from natural gas and petroleum
(5) Chemicals and polymers from ethylene
(6) Chemicals and polymers from propylene
(7) Chemicals from the C4 stream
(8) Chemicals from the C5 stream
(9) Chemicals from benzene
(10) Chemicals from toluene
(11) Chemicals from xylenes
(12) Chemicals from methane
(13) Chemicals from alkanes
(14) Chemicals form coal
(15) Fats and oils
(16) Carbohydrates
(17) How polymers are made
(18) Industrial catalysts
(19) Green chemistry
(20) Sustainability

The book also has four APPENDICES, and these concern units and conversion factors, and an essay on shale gas and shale oil.

From the title of the book, one might guess that the book is purely about organic chemistry, or perhaps, about chemical engineering. From the large number of structures, and the paucity of pictures of reactors, it is obvious that the book is much more about organic chemistry, and not much about chemical engineering. Moreover, the terms “heat exchanger” and “condenser” do not even occur in the index. (Actually, page 23 has the word, “heat exchanger.”) Continued perusal of this 807-page book reveals that it is somewhat like a book called, THE PRIZE by Daniel Yergin. Mr. Yergin’s book concerns the history of the oil industry, where the book has a continuing theme of politics and economics.

PATENTS. I was pleased to see a 2-page introduction to patents. The book is correct in stating that “patent specifications are a major source of technical information.” The book is correct in observing that patents are written in “legal jargon.” However, any patent agent or attorney can easily see through the jargon, and determine the technical features of the invention. The book reveals that a copy of a U.S. patent can be acquired for $3.00. But this is out-moded information. Patents can be acquired for free on the web site of the U.S. Patent Office, on the web site of the European Patent Office, and on the web at freepatentsonline dot com.

HOW THE WORLD IS PUT TOGETHER. CHAPTER ONE discloses how the world is put together, from the standpoint of the organic chemist. We learn that “the petroleum refining industry was the first to convert to continuous operation” and we learn that “batch processes” are not much used for commodity chemicals. We learn that, in the first half of the 20th century, a nation’s industrial development could be gauged from its production of sulfuric acid (I was amazed to read this, since my father told me the same thing about 50 years ago. This was one of his many tidbits of trivia that he told me.) We read that the chemical industry is an “upstream industry,” because of its emphasis on purchasing raw materials, e.g., gas, coal, minerals. We learn that, apart from pharmaceuticals, few of the chemical industry’s products are sold to consumers. The above tidbits of information go a very long way into informing the reader about how the world is put together. This is a concrete book that does a very good job at connecting these facts to the world-at-large. Following these inspiring “tidbits,” we encounter a few pages about government regulations about chemicals, a few pages on chemical industry disasters in the years 2000-2010 (I noticed that many of these occurred in China, Africa, and India). Regarding regulation, we learn about laws eliminating lead tetraalkyls from gasoline, and the elimination of butrylbenzyl phthalate from childrens’ toys. We learn of a proposed ban of methyl bromide as a soil fumigant.

ECONOMY AND THE BEHAVIOR OF CORPORATIONS. CHAPTER TWO compares production and demand, using the example of ETHYLENE. We learn that one feature of organic chemical commerce is “stockpiling” and we further learn that ETHYLENE cannot be stockpiled. We read about the building of ETHYLENE CRACKERS in various parts of the world, such as in Louisiana, West Virginia, and India. Page 54 has a table, showing ETHYLENE capacity for the USA (top), then Saudi Arabia, then China, and at the bottom, India and Austria. These data are broken down by the name of the company, e.g., Dow Exxon, and PetroChina. Pages 56-60 disclose mergers, and we learn that HOECHST de-merged itself into twelve small companies. We learn that ZENECA merged with ASTRA, to give ASTRAZENECA. We learn that DOW and UNION CARBIDE merged in 2001. We learn that AMERICAN CYANAMID, which “survives but does not feature in the top 50 chemical companies.”

ACETALDEHYDE. Jumping ahead to CHAPTER FIVE, we find a 3-page section about ACETALDEHYDE. We read that acetaldehyde production has declined in the past 20 years. We learn that acetaldehyde was first made by the WACKER REACTION. We read that this reaction was replaced by a newer reaction. Page 166 has a large diagram showing the mechanism of action of the WACKER REACTION in acetaldehyde production, for example, showing condensation of ethyelenewith a molecule of water, catalytic dehydrogenation, and oxidation of palladium by copper, and so on. Overall, the reaction converts ETHYLENE to ACETALDEHYDE.

ACRYLAMIDE. Leaping forward to CHAPTER SIX, the first few pages inform the reader that “Asia-Pacific had about as much propylene capacity as North America and Western Europe put together. This is because Asia-Pacific producers use heavier feedstocks (naphtha and gas oil) compared to the lighter feedstock used in the U.S. Propylene demand is skyrocketing in Asia-Pacific, especially for polypropylene. As one can see, a theme in this book is economics and politics. The book is not entirely “dry” and without humor, as we read that, “for many years propylene was ethylene’s ugly sister, a by-product that was used in the refinery, sold at a fraction above its fuel value or burned . . . what changed everything was the discovery . . . of polypropylene.” (page 212) CHAPTER SIX includes a page on ACRYLAMIDE, a topic dear to me, because I have several years of experience using polyacrylamide. Anyway, we are shown a diagram showing the conversion of ACRYLONITRILE to ACRYLAMIDE, and the book shows two different methods for making acrylamide. Then, a half page is devoted to showing microbial production of acrylamide. Finally, we learn that acrylamide is used to increase the viscosity of water, for use in increasing the recovery of oil during pumping water through rock formations. I was glad to see the disclosure that, “They [acrylamides] are of value in gel electrophoresis.” My work on acrylamide and electrophoresis is disclosed in my article, Brody, T. (1997) Analytical Biochemistry. 247:247-256.

CONCLUSION. The book discloses many chemical reactions that were discovered in the first half of the 20th century, and also discloses contemporary biotechnological approaches to accomplishing the same reaction. This book will be a friend to people in their 80s, who love to reminisce about old-school organic chemistry, and this book will also be a friend to executives in biotech companies in the San Francisco Bay area, who hope to become wealthy by engineering microbes to synthesize fuels and other chemicals. This book will also be valued by any person interested on the economics of commodities, and by extension, will also be indispensable to any person interested in global politics. The book will also be valued by corporate attorneys who represent the needs of chemical companies. The book is like some sort of combination of the Wall Street Journal and a book on organic chemistry. The book is entirely successful in creating this combination, where this success was made possible by the large size of the book.

The Universal History of Computing: From the Abacus to the Quantum Computer, by Georges Ifrah

"A fascinating compendium of information about writing systems–both for words and numbers."
–Publishers Weekly

"A truly enlightening and fascinating study for the mathematically oriented reader."
–Booklist

"Well researched. . . . This book is a rich resource for those involved in researching the history of computers."
–The Mathematics Teacher

In this brilliant follow-up to his landmark international bestseller, The Universal History of Numbers, Georges Ifrah traces the development of computing from the invention of the abacus to the creation of the binary system three centuries ago to the incredible conceptual, scientific, and technical achievements that made the first modern computers possible. Ifrah takes us along as he visits mathematicians, visionaries, philosophers, and scholars from every corner of the world and every period of history. We learn about the births of the pocket calculator, the adding machine, the cash register, and even automata. We find out how the origins of the computer can be found in the European Renaissance, along with how World War II influenced the development of analytical calculation. And we explore such hot topics as numerical codes and the recent discovery of new kinds of number systems, such as "surreal" numbers.

Adventurous and enthralling, The Universal History of Computing is an astonishing achievement that not only unravels the epic tale of computing, but also tells the compelling story of human intelligence–and how much further we still have to go.

Amazon.com Review
From the I Ching to AI, tremendous human brainpower has been devoted to devising easier means of counting and thinking. Former math teacher Georges Ifrah has devoted his life to tracking down traces of our early calculating tools and reporting on them with charm and verve. The Universal History of Computing: From the Abacus to Quantum Computing gives a grand title to a grand subject, and Ifrah makes good on his promise of universality by leaping far back in time and spanning all of the inhabited continents. If his scope is vast, his stories and details are still engrossing. Readers will hang on to the stories of 19th-century inventors who converged on multiplication machines and other, more general "engines," and better understand the roots of biological and quantum computation. Ifrah has great respect for our ancestors and their work, and he transmits this feeling to his readers with humor and humility. His timelines, diagrams, and concordance help the reader who might be unfamiliar with foreign concepts of numbers and computation keep up with his narrative. By the end, his slight bias against strong artificial intelligence comes through, but he is careful to acknowledge the future's unforeseeable nature and suggest that we keep our minds open. How can we resist? --Rob Lightner

From Publishers Weekly
A fascinating compendium of information about writing systemsDboth for words and numbersDand ancient systems of calculation, this followup book by the author of The Universal History of Numbers will enthrall specialists, though its perplexing structure may put off other readers. Part One begins with a 19-page chronology of significant events in the development of number writing up to 1654, followed by 38 pages of charts with codes and figures that are not explained or referenced anywhere in the book. Some of these charts make sense, such as a diagram showing how medieval accountants wrote very large numbers with Roman numerals. Others remain cryptic. However, in Part Two, Ifrah begins to weave together a cogent intellectual history of physical representations of numbers and calculations with compelling stories and philosophical analyses of computational processing. Occasionally, his facts are ungrounded: for example, he places John Patterson (the promoter of the cash register, born 1844) before the Revolutionary War. But since the book is primarily concerned with ideas rather than people or events, this sort of carelessness is not a major problem. Originally writing in French, Ifrah distinguishes sharply between "computing" and "computers"Dand the modern computer has almost no place in his story. Unfortunately, the translator chooses to use "compute" in both senses, which makes some sections of the book unintelligible, and may lead readers to mistakenly expect this book to be a history of computers. From Booklist
Ifrah begins his comprehensive study of the development of humankind's ability to manipulate numbers by touching lightly on early humans' first grasp of numbers and counting, and he carries through to the kinds of tasks we can expect future computers to perform. In between is a wealth of detailed information. Ifrah leaves no stone unturned in piecing this history together, covering such topics as the advent of writing, the change from character-based numbering to systems based on digit place value, and the discoveries and development of various mathematical methodologies. He ties it all in with concurrent scientific advances and the socioeconomic factors of the time that played a role in these developments. The result is an impressively thorough account of humankind's advancement from sticks and beads as counting aids, through the early mechanical calculators, to modern electronic calculators and computers. A truly enlightening and fascinating study for the mathematically oriented reader. Gavin Quinn

A Philosophical Approach
By John Edwards
If you have been looking for a more academic approach to the history of computing then this is the book for you.

The book is divided into three parts. Part One contains a very comprehensive taxonomy/chronology showing the evolution of human number systems.

Part Two is where you will find the core "History of Computing" bit: tables, logarithms, analogue/digital, mechanical calculators, automatic calculation, electronic machines etc. It also includes an interleaved, and detailed, explanation of how computing has evolved from basic number crunching into abstract information processing.

Part Three reads like a long philosophical conclusion and contains some excellent material on ethics and artificial intelligence.

Methodical history but a little dry
By Kevin W. Parker
I would have expected from the title that this book might have started in the 1940s (or at the earliest with Babbage and the Difference Engine) and told the story of the development of computers from there. No, as the subtitle indicates, this book goes way back. In fact, the first section is a summary of number systems going back to the age of the Egyptians and before. It's a very methodical and somewhat dry tale, not helped by being translated from the French by translators who feel compelled to insert their own comments at intervals.
When it does get going, it provides a history of the relevant mathematics as well as automata from the Islamic era forward. The actual computer era is touched on mostly in its early stages, with the first computers of the forties and fifties. And it concludes with about sixty pages that have nothing to do with history but rather attempt to define key words such as "information" and "computer."
All in all, it is a methodical and thorough book, perhaps a little dry but not as much as some books I have read. The author muses on the implications of various stages of discovery rather than simply relating the facts (and the translators chime in as well), which enlivens the story. Still, this book is probably for the more interested rather than the casual reader.

The Universal History of Computing : From the Abacus to
By A Customer
This book is really fascinating, especially if you are interested in scientific and technical achievements. Read this book and you'll find out how the computer can be traced to the Renaissance, and how Word War II influenced the development of analytical calculation. The epic tale of computing comes to life in these pages.

Not until the publication of the Textbook of Biological Psychiatry has the science of psychiatric disorders and clinical practice been seamlessly integrated in a modern text.

In this landmark volume, editor Jaak Panksepp assembles the perspectives of top scientists and clinicians who apply contemporary neuroscience to psychiatric issues. In each chapter, the book draws on a range of cutting-edge research areas–such as the biochemistry of neurotransmission, behavioral pharmacology, and the clinical aspects of psychiatric problems–to give you the most informed, practical overview of biological psychiatry available.

Featuring a cohesive, three-part organization, the Textbook of Biological Psychiatry begins with an incisive look at core concepts, from the role of stress, sleep, and sexuality in psychiatric disorders to the use of neuroimaging in psychiatry.

The Textbook then considers the biological mechanisms and treatment of those disorders that pose major psychiatric challenges, including:

  • Depression
  • Schizophrenia
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder
  • Panic disorders
  • Obsessive-Compulsive disorder
  • Childhood neuropsychiatric disorders
  • Alzheimer’s disease

Just as it distinguishes itself through a one-of-a-kind clinical approach to psychiatry, the Textbook of Biological Psychiatry also offers a unique outlook on the future of the field. Compiled here are the latest, forward-thinking insights in the treatment of anxiety and mood disorders, somatic treatments, sociophysiology, and more.

I am a chemist but understands medicine very well. The title of this book is bombastic. one would think it is realy biologic in nature but when I read it I was disappointed to the information given in it. I must say I did not benefit from reading it. So I cannot recommend it to others for buying this book.
