This second edition of Phaselock Techniques promises to be—as was the first—the standard reference on the subject. Now greatly expanded and largely rewritten to reflect a better understanding of the subject, the book presents much recent material, some published here for the first time. Explanation of fundamentals is improved and expanded, and description of applications is greatly increased. The first portion of the book is a well-organized review of the fundamentals of phaselock, as well as a discussion of the underlying problems faced by designers. Most of this material has been rewritten from the first edition. The material that follows deals with practical aspects of component circuits and with rational procedures for deciding upon phaselock loop parameters. This all-new examination of loop components is found nowhere else in today’s literature. The remaining chapters provide engineering descriptions and analyses of applications of phaselock. Most of this material is unique. Included are discussions of phaselocked modulators and demodulators, synthesizers, receivers, transponders, oscillator stabilizers, and data synchronizers.

Greatly Improved Edition

I am gladly surprised to see how the author has taken the effort, not just to make a routine revision of the classic book, but to write a completely different book. Non interesting material has been removed, while new up-to-date topics have been added (for instance Charge Pump PLL), based on the own author research, and other published papers.
The approach of some classic analysis has also changed. In particular the approach to the so called Loop Filter as a controller and not as a filter.
In summary, a very valuable addition to PLL literature, worth to buy even by readers that own previous editions.

Partial History of PLLs and Dr Gardner's Contribution

The first PLL I know of was developed by JPL for the receiver used to track the first US satellite, Explorer 1, circa 1958. The basic idea was pretty straightforward, to close a very narrow loop around the phase of a carrier signal embedded in noise, perhaps with a SNR as low as a negative 20 dB in the receiver IF. This loop was used to adjust a voltage controlled oscillator [VCO] in the receiver to match the frequency and phase of the satellite signal. The error [and phase modulated telemetry] was detected by a phase detector and when the loop was locked, the error signal was essentially a varying dc voltage used to control the oscillator. An easy-to-implement low-pass filter [with a lead term] determined the SNR of the control signal and the noise bandwidth of the receiver. Thus was generated a Type 2 servo. This loop implementation, that made tracking the received satellite signals as low as -154 dBm, practical, was attributed to Dr Eberhardt Rechtin of JPL. There are a lot of tradeoffs needed to optimize the PLL, stabilizing the second order feedback loop was only one of these. Requirements were also placed on the satellite's signal source stability and telemetry modulation index, etc.
Dr Gardner was the first mathematical engineers to unveil all the secrets of this technology and the requirements of the hardware needed to implement it successfully. Before his excellent text, you had to be in tight with the JPL guys, a generally outstanding bunch of fellows it was my pleasure to know as a young engineer. Just dumb luck. Dr Gardner was much more than a PLL guru, he was one of the best communications systems engineers on the planet and some more dumb luck found me working with Dr Gardner on many diverse projects during the next 40 years. Building PLL space communications receivers was an art-form that required paying attention to a lot of mathematical engineering. Later on, PLLs that used a specialized microcircuit to lock up strong signals in a computer were what most people thought of when PLLs were mentioned [BTW, not all of these worked all that well at first]. So the complaints that his book was too technical may have been true in those cases, except perhaps for the chip designers.
But if you really want to understand the technology and what's going down at places like JPL's Deep Space Instrumentation Facilities, Dr Gardner's book is still the bible.
