About the Author
MICHAEL J. FLYNN is Director of the Sub-Nanosecond Arithmetic Processor (SNAP) project at Stanford University. For the past decade, he has been the leading source of published research in the area of computer arithmetic design. Stuart F. Oberman earned his Phd at Stanford University and is currently manager of VLSI Design at Nishan Systems, San Jose, California. He previously worked at AMD, where he was the architect of the Athlon floating-point unit. His research interests include new algorithms for high-speed computer arithmetic, high-speed switch-fabric design, and architectures for high-throughput network processors.

It All DependsOn What You Want

If you're a researcher in the field, or if all you do is design high-performance airthmetic circuits, it's probably a good book to have. But if you have a specific job to do, like implementing a "mundane" radix-2 SRT divider, this isn't the book for you. As another reviewer said (and I should have listened) the authors simply leave out far too many details. Keep looking ... there are better books out there!

Too many missing details

The content of this book is very disappointing. Too many details are missing. In many cases, the authors describe implementations without getting into the details of how they reached it. Because of these missing details, it is hard to understand the reasonning behind some of the trade-offs described in the book. It lacks clarity in several areas. Even with some experience in the area, I was left too many times trying to figure out what the authors meant.
