While optical techniques and instrumentation have achieved unparalleled sophistication, most advanced problems in optics require the introduction of statistical considerations for their solution. Statistical Optics is a comprehensive treatment of optics problems whose solutions lie beyond the power of deterministic analysis. A good textbook in statistical optics

Since I'm an optics graduate student beginning my research on image through atmosphere turbulance, I'm eager to find a book of statistic optics which can be both a classical one and easy of self-studying, in fact, I don't want to waste a lot of time jumping from one book to another trying to get the right one for me. One friend of mine introduced this book to me, also because it is written by goodman, whose book "Introduction to Fourier Optics" is one of the best books I've ever read, I did have a try on this book, "Statistical Optics". It's really well written and good organized, I read all through the book, especially on the chapter focus on the theory of partial coherence, imaging with partially coherent light, and atmospheric degradations of images. I obtained not only some basic concepts from it, even got some inspiration for the research work I'm doing. Thank you, Prof. Goodman. Thank you for offering another classical optics textbook to the optics student!

If you can find this text for under $30, it is an excellent & useful addition to your library.

Pros: Clear explanation of much of classical optical coherence theory & propagation; great introduction to some basic statistics and applications. Excellent presentation for anyone having completed a couple years of undergraduate studies in electrical engineering or physics, as well as researchers with at least an undergraduate degree in the physical and/or mathematical sciences willing to put in a little work.
Cons: Pricey for a 3-decades old classic; requires a background in Fourier optics, e.g., Joe's "Into to Fourier Optics" and/or Jack Gaskill's excellent treatise on "Linear Systems, Transforms and Optics."
If you can find any of Goodman's texts at a good price you can't go wrong - and this is no exception. But for more detail and depth at only a marginal increase in cost, consider Mandle & Wolf's, "Optical Coherence and Quantum Optics."

The book is outstanding and is already a classic - however I believe that a new edition of the book was due by January and then by May - I assumed that I was getting the new edition but I got the old one - please will someone tell if there really is a new edition to be available soon
