One family’s mission
"With the fires of hatred rekindled in the North by the assassination and in the South by emancipation, the establishment of a more perfect union as heralded in Henry Ward’s speech was a matter of deep doubt. From his pulpit and publications, Henry Ward would have to plead with his fellow countrymen to be understanding and compassionate; as a commander responsible for order and purposeful activity to a large segment of a society turned upside down, James would have to deal with an infinite number of practical problems. Fortunately, the Beecher brothers knew that they would at least have the strong support of active and influential siblings. Four living brothers were also ministers, and three of their four sisters had established national and international leadership positions through their writings, speeches, and organizational activities. If, as Lincoln suggested, Beechers had made the war, they would now feel charged to make the peace. They had learned that it would not be easy from half a century of trying to sell their gospel of love to their fellow men; hatred found a readier market. Nevertheless, the Beechers would go on trying, since the mission that they had been trained for from the cradle was simply to save the world."

Review
“…fascinating family saga.” (Church Times, 16 May 2004)
In this lively family portrait of the children of preacher Lyman Beecher (1775-1863), journalist and author Schreiner (Henry Clay Frick) uses a novelistic format to capture the drama of one of America's most influential families. In terms of influence power, and controversy, the Beechers were the 19th century's equivalent of the Kennedy family. As outspoken abolitionists, feminists, and religious and educational reformers they played a key role in shaping the country. The family included novelist Harriet Beecher Stowe and abolitionist preacher Henry Ward Beecher, but there were other notable offspring as well: Catharine., an educational reformer and controversial writer, Isabella. a well-known feminist; and James, a Union general in command of the former black regiment, made up of former staves. Written for a general audience, the book brings the Beechers to life through the liberal use of correspondence, memoirs and firsthand accounts. He poignantly captures the highs and lows of a family often in the public eye. Recommended for all American history collections. —Robert Flatley, Kutztown Univ. of Pennsylvania (Library Journal, September 15, 2003)
From the Inside Flap
When Abraham Lincoln first met Harriet Beecher Stowe in the 1860s he greeted her by saying "So this is the little lady who started this big war"–referring to her wildly popular and influential novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, which had galvanized Northern opposition to slavery. He could have made similar comments about her brother, Henry Ward Beecher and, indeed, many of the eleven sons and daughters of the fiery Presbyterian minister and abolitionist, Lyman Beecher. In The Passionate Beechers, veteran journalist, biographer, and novelist Samuel Schreiner tells the true, larger-than-life story of the nineteenth century’s most famous, influential, and controversial American family.
Revered by millions and reviled by millions more for their outspokenness, revolutionary thinking, and personal idiosyncrasies, the Beechers seemed to be everywhere in American life. As Harriet’s novels inspired the nation, Henry, Edward, Charles, and Thomas–all preachers–electrified their congregations with powerful sermons. Catharine crusaded for women’s education, and James served as both commander and chaplain to his all-black regiment, the Thirty-fifth United States Colored Troops. The youngest daughter, Isabella, was a fiery leader of the women’s suffrage movement and a spiritualist who received messages that she was related to Jesus and sent to rule the world. Virtually all of the Beechers were, like their father, accomplished writers whose ardent opinions were published in countless books, newspapers, and magazines–many of them published or edited by Beechers.
Written with the power, scope, and intimacy of a blockbuster novel, this sweeping family saga explores the extraordinary accomplishments, public acclaim, private tragedies, and national scandals that kept the Beechers in the public eye for nearly a century. It assesses their impact on the abolitionist movement, women’s suffrage, the Reconstruction, and the transformation of mainstream Protestant doctrine from fire and brimstone Calvinism to the gospel of love, charity, and good news. It also recounts numerous family tragedies, including the early death of their mother, worn out from childbirth; the disappearance of Harriet’s alcoholic son; and the scandalous adultery trial of Henry Ward Beecher.
Like the Adamses before them and the Kennedys later on, the Beechers made a profound impact on American culture, an effect which can still be felt today. The Passionate Beechers tells the story of this exceptional family with an energy and enthusiasm worthy of the Beechers themselves.

A Glimpse into the Mid-Nineteenth Century American Psyche
By Florantha
The book shows the highly intertwined lives of the ten surviving children of Lyman Beecher, an important person in religious circles of the second quarter of the 19th century. The author is to be thanked for his bringing together the family story.
The title is well chosen. This is indeed a passionate family. And passion-ridden. Breakdowns, retreats to rest cure spas, public censure, religious interrogation by authorities, and the bully pulpit as well as the formal one. If you already know some American history, this book will be more useful but even if you don't, you can make out the general plot line and spot some amazing people coming and going.
One of my greatest insights gained from the book is the relationship between the Beechers and newspaper/journal owners. It also points out a few strong influences from parishioners and church authorities/councils/founders.
I am nearly finished reading this book and have found it useful in filling in a lot of blanks for my own research into pre-Civil War evangelical communities that sponsored Indian missions, not that there is even a mention of Indian missions. It's the world of the abolitionist religious thinker that we see here. The remarkable logging of Lyman Beecher's children's and grandchildren's religious conversion or lack thereof is an eye-opener. Extend this insight into the lives of people you are reading about and you will understand a lot of background assumptions that most people of the time did not bother to overtly state or record in their memoirs and letters.
Believe it or not, there's quite a bit of women's history in here. I was pleased to meet Catharine Beecher in the story. She is a major person of the period and yet is not handled well in the general information sources I have been reading. Her projects, biases, and products are not exactly what some historians have told me. I never knew Isabella Hooker but I know her now and think she was worth meeting.
I have a few criticisms:
The author needed to work harder at reading his own sentences; there are too many stumble lines that I needed to reread in order to make sense of them. This is an editorial staff failure. The worst is one in which Harriet Beecher Stowe uses her "fictitious skills" or something like that when the author meant "fiction writing skills." He could also give some more paragraph breaks; turning points are often buried in a larger paragraph with so many characters and little ideas that we miss the big ones.
The author does not tell us where the information comes from. I assume this is because he was writing a book intended for a non-academic audience. The Bibliography is there and we can make some guesses, but I want footnotes and I missed them.
There should have been a who's related to whom chart of the original family and another one of each family in the second generation. When a family has so many people bearing the same name, such as "Henry," we can't tell who's who without a program. A timeline of events and places for each of Lyman Beecher's children would also be very welcome. I'm trying to cross-reference a cast of people in my own work and it would be wonderful for me to be able to see when so-and-so was living in Cincinnati and when (s)he was living in Hartford or whatever. I'm sure local history people and other historians would have appreciated these also. (A word of advice to historians reading this--give us tools to quickly digest your material: Timelines! Family Trees! Summaries! Maps! Annotations in bibliographies!)
