This text provides perhaps the most concise and authoritative resource for the field of Metallurgical Failure Analysis that I have read. Rather than apporaching failures from a cookbook perspective, that is only linking cause to failure through single case histories, this author presents the fundamental concepts of the discipline and suplements them with appropriate examples.After reading the book, I am considering using it a text to a course that previously could only be approached with personal course notes. This is the most comprehensive and fundamentally organized book I have read in years. Well worth twice the price.

Compliments other texts, but has individual weaknesses

This book has a ton of great information in it, but could use more supporting notation with the pictures. The quality and resolution of the pictures and figures is lacking as well. I have much higher expectations for the print quality of modern books. I found myself struggling with many of the figures, because the author does not do a great job at elaborating on what the picture is trying to communicate. Rarely do the pictures have arrows pointing out key features. Sometimes features are so obvious an arrow is not critical; however, the eye of a non-expert sometimes needs a little help.

I also found the author does not always follow convention with respect to variables. For example, I have quite a lot of experience in Weibull and life data analysis, and I have never run across the variables the author used for the Weibull parameters.

On a positive, this book does provide a good historical account of many analysis methods.

I do not recommend this book, if it your first text on failure analysis. I find it most helpful when I have additional texts to tie loose ends together. I recommend Brooks and Choudhury's book if you are looking for more of a reference to be used in a professional environment.

In the end, I am glad I have this text in my personal library; however, I would be very disappointed if it was my first (or only) text on the topic.

Why is so little published on product failure? The subject is serious enough given the dire consequences if the product carries passengers, for example. Analysis of major disasters is a well-known genre, such as the seemingly endless books about the loss of The Titanic, but failures where large loss of life does not occur seem under-published. Yet they can be just as important in revealing potential design flaws which could lead to much worse when unrecognised, or not addressed by product designers. The subject of forensic engineering has grown fast in the last two decades, prompted by the growth in litigation, which demands that expert investigation is undertaken to determine the cause or causes of specific failures. The present book attempts to address the problems of metal product failures in a very detailed and comprehensive examination of the failure of metal products. It identifies the major failure modes, such as fatigue, corrosion and under-design, and describes the ways of circumventing the problems. If there is any drawback, it is that other materials are not included, such as polymers, ceramics or glasses. The book is very well illustrated with numerous cases studies, many from the files of the author, and it deserves a wide readership.

When Abraham Lincoln first met Harriet Beecher Stowe in the 1860s he greeted her by saying "So this is the little lady who started this big war"–referring to her wildly popular and influential novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, which had galvanized Northern opposition to slavery. He could have made similar comments about her brother, Henry Ward Beecher and, indeed, many of the eleven sons and daughters of the fiery Presbyterian minister and abolitionist, Lyman Beecher. A Glimpse into the Mid-Nineteenth Century American Psyche

The book shows the highly intertwined lives of the ten surviving children of Lyman Beecher, an important person in religious circles of the second quarter of the 19th century. The author is to be thanked for his bringing together the family story.

The title is well chosen. This is indeed a passionate family. And passion-ridden. Breakdowns, retreats to rest cure spas, public censure, religious interrogation by authorities, and the bully pulpit as well as the formal one. If you already know some American history, this book will be more useful but even if you don't, you can make out the general plot line and spot some amazing people coming and going.

One of my greatest insights gained from the book is the relationship between the Beechers and newspaper/journal owners. It also points out a few strong influences from parishioners and church authorities/councils/founders.

I am nearly finished reading this book and have found it useful in filling in a lot of blanks for my own research into pre-Civil War evangelical communities that sponsored Indian missions, not that there is even a mention of Indian missions. It's the world of the abolitionist religious thinker that we see here. The remarkable logging of Lyman Beecher's children's and grandchildren's religious conversion or lack thereof is an eye-opener. Extend this insight into the lives of people you are reading about and you will understand a lot of background assumptions that most people of the time did not bother to overtly state or record in their memoirs and letters.

Believe it or not, there's quite a bit of women's history in here. I was pleased to meet Catharine Beecher in the story. She is a major person of the period and yet is not handled well in the general information sources I have been reading. Her projects, biases, and products are not exactly what some historians have told me. I never knew Isabella Hooker but I know her now and think she was worth meeting.

I have a few criticisms:
The author needed to work harder at reading his own sentences; there are too many stumble lines that I needed to reread in order to make sense of them. This is an editorial staff failure. The worst is one in which Harriet Beecher Stowe uses her "fictitious skills" or something like that when the author meant "fiction writing skills." He could also give some more paragraph breaks; turning points are often buried in a larger paragraph with so many characters and little ideas that we miss the big ones.

The author does not tell us where the information comes from. I assume this is because he was writing a book intended for a non-academic audience. The Bibliography is there and we can make some guesses, but I want footnotes and I missed them.

There should have been a who's related to whom chart of the original family and another one of each family in the second generation. When a family has so many people bearing the same name, such as "Henry," we can't tell who's who without a program. A timeline of events and places for each of Lyman Beecher's children would also be very welcome. I'm trying to cross-reference a cast of people in my own work and it would be wonderful for me to be able to see when so-and-so was living in Cincinnati and when (s)he was living in Hartford or whatever. I'm sure local history people and other historians would have appreciated these also. (A word of advice to historians reading this--give us tools to quickly digest your material: Timelines! Family Trees! Summaries! Maps! Annotations in bibliographies!)

About the Author
WILLIAM LIU, PhD, is a senior member of the technical staff at Texas Instruments, where he has worked since obtaining his PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1991. Dr. Liu has been TI's lead contact in mentoring the development of BSIM4 model equations with UC Berkeley, and has been in charge of the modeling development for LDMOS/DEMOS and RF-CMOS in TI's SPICE Modeling Laboratory. Dr. Liu has authored/coauthored five book chapters, and has written more than fifty journal papers on modeling, device characterization, and fabrication. Dr. Liu has also published two books on III-V device technologies. Dr. Liu holds sixteen U.S. patents and is a senior member of IEEE.

I am the author William Liu. I notice there is no link to the book content (as of May, 2001). Therefore, I thought I would add that here. I am sorry to have to rate my own book a five star before I can put put forth the book content in this review space. Nonetheless, it is indeed my view that the book is a five star, an opinion which I believe, can be justified by the content shown next.

Delightful!

This is clearly the best and newest book on MOSFET models. It's Liu's third book, and it's delightful. That's a strange word for a technical book, but it's true! This book is both practical (down to earth) and occasionally funny.
I must admit... I haven't read all 588 pages yet, but the sections I have read are all clearly written, well illustrated and there is just enough background information to make the topics interesting. For example when he discusses the possibility of BSIM3 calculating a negative back-gate transconductance, gmb, or a negative mutual transconductance, gm, he points out that a negative gm has actually been reported in a real device, and gives the reference. Then he gives a checklist you can use to help prevent the negative gmb problem in your model.
I was particularly interested and amused by his explanation of the "Killer NOR Gate" in section 4.2 "Problems with the 40/60 Partition." This circuit caused a lot of interesting e-mail discussion a couple of years ago.
His chapter 3 contains a very good 130-page "ALPHABETICAL GLOSSARY OF BSIM3 PARAMETERS." Anybody who works with BSIM3 knows you need a handy list of all the model parameters and what they mean. Liu devotes a couple of paragraphs to each, and he recommends leaving many of them equal to zero!
I'm more of a SPICE model user, not so much a theorist, and I found this book to be exactly what I needed.
The other recent classics on this subject are Cheng & Hu's MOSFET Modeling & BSIM3 User's Guide (1999), Arora's MOSFET Models for VLSI Circuit Simulation (1993) and Foty's MOSFET Modeling with SPICE (1996).

A Must Have Text

William Liu (SML Modeling Expert/DMTS) has recently authored an excellent text on the BSIM3 and BSIM4 SPICE models. It is a "must have" text for modeling engineers, designers, or PIs who would like a deeper understanding of the BSIM3/4 models. William's sense of humor is evident throughout the text which makes the deep technical aspects even more fun. Check out "Mosfet Models for Spice Simulation."

Strong project approach, some gaps - overall: valuable

This book provides a sound approach to planning and managing an ERP rapid implementation project, but falls short of the mark on the "E-Business" part alluded to in the title.
First, the strengths: the rapid implementation roadmap that is the topic of chapter 2 is thorough and well thought out. The phases are commit [to the project], start, manage, analyze, configure, test, change, support, convert, prepare, go live and improve. The roadmap gives both structure to a project plan and breaks it down into manageable pieces.
Chapter 3 covers vendor selection, and provides excellent material for developing RFIs and RFPs and evaluating responses from vendors. Among the best practices given here are identifying key requirements, focusing on what is essential and using a proof-of-concept approach. Managing the rapid implementation, chapter 4's topic, is comprehensive and is consistent with sound project management practices. Key areas that are particularly strong address taking a deliverables-based approach, managing scope and project issue management. These are the ingredients of a successful implementation and the author covers them in depth. Chapter 5 covers the people part of the equation by providing guidance on how to organize the implementation team, roles and responsibilities, and managing change. My favorite two chapters are 6 and 8. Chapter 6 addresses nine essential factors for success, the best (in my opinion) is the rule that no reengineering is allowed during the implementation. This is sage advice because if you attempt to take advantage of opportunities to reengineer you are going to quickly drift outside of project scope, not to mention slowing to a crawl what is supposed to be a rapid implementation. Chapter 8, my other favorite chapter, gives a list of "project accelerators", which are methods or processes that will ensure that the rapid implementation is rapid.
Weaknesses: (1) The author does not address E-business despite the title of this book. I am going to assume that the publisher insisted on including that in the title. (2) There are some glaring gaps in the author's "eXtended Enterprise System" (EXS) framework. He cites six layers using the technical infrastructure as the foundation and moving up through a transactional backbone, advanced applications, cross-application repository and a management dashboard as the capstone. What is missing from the picture is middleware, including transaction monitors, message queuing and the other "glue" that holds together an enterprise architecture. While this book is more suited for project managers, the omission is serious because the middleware layer increases the scope and complexity of an ERP project as well as the cost. (3) Technology support issues (chapter 7) was not strong in identifying release criteria to production, not the artifacts that production needs in order to support an ERP system. Release to production is a critical point in the life cycle that affects IT service delivery, as well as operational considerations (performance and capacity baselines, workload scheduling, etc.).
Recommendation: The rapid implementation approach given in this book is complete and attainable. The author gives practical advice that can be applied to not only ERP implementations, but other system implementations as well. As such, this is a good book for project managers and upper IT management. If you note the gaps I cited above and take them into account, this book will lead you through a successful implementation. I am subtracting a star for the misleading title and the weaknesses, but still highly recommend this book.

Structured, Realistic and Well Thought Out

This book covers what it takes to successfully manage a rapid implementation project for any enterprise-wide application. It does so in a structured and realistic manner that addresses risks, critical success factors and common deliverables. Project management is much more than common sense - it requires a process and skillful use of PM techniques, such as those contained in PMI's Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). This is reinforced by the appalling number of IT projects that either fail or are cancelled. While this book doesn't go deeply into specific PM techniques, nor does it especially align to the PMBOK, it does provide a realistic framework. It also gives a complete list of risks and barriers to success that you'll encounter in ERP and other complex systems projects.
I especially like the way the author decomposes the systems into layers and the project approach into phases. These allow you to step back and see the big picture, and to do a better job of estimating scope, complexity and required resources before embarking on the project. The project management approach itself is solid, and is linked to critical success factors that will make or break any project. He also provides excellent advice on team management, and especially team communications and cross functions.
Managing complex projects are not easy, and this book contains no short cuts. It does show you how to plan and control a rapid implementation project for any enterprise system, and if the advice and general approach provided in this book is heeded and followed your chances for success will be dramatically improved. Just don't let anyone who thinks it's a matter of plain common sense anywhere near the project because you'll find the project to be just another statistic in the boneyard of failed IT projects.

Packed with Knowledge!

Technically challenged readers might well find some pain in the pages of this book, but the agony is no fault of the author. The topic at hand, integrating new software applications packages with current systems, is one of the most complex and difficult challenges in all of business. If you want to know about the ingredients and history of food throughout the regions of America, this is a pretty good book. As a recipe book, however, it fails quite horribly. When using this text in class, amounts of ingredients had to be vastly adjusted; more often than not, I just found different recipes of the dish online because I couldn't trust any of the ones in there.

That being said, there are a few gems contained in it's pages. The bread pudding with whiskey sauce and banana pudding recipes are fantastic, as well as the kahlua pig recipe from the Hawaiian chapter.

Good as a reference book, not so much as a recipe book, so be warned.

This was one of my text books in culinary school and I have to say that it is the worst written book I have ever come across.

There is alot of useful information within that describes in detail the ingredients used in various parts of the country but if you are using it for the recipes, beware because there are numerous mistakes. If you can get it used, it can serve as a good reference book but that's about it.

What a frustrating book

We use this book in my American Regional Cuisine class. I get so frustrated working with this book, and I'm still not sure why the Chef uses it, because he gets frustrated, too. The recipe layout conventions vary from recipe to recipe, almost like several different people wrote them (which they did, but consistency is key! Especially if you intend your book to be used as a textbook)! Often, I find myself asking Chef, "Why did the author do this?" or "Why wouldn't the author do this other technique?" Chef often disagrees with the recipes listed in the book, or straight out tells us not to use them, or modify them.

I do, however, give 2 stars. The history of each region is well laid-out, flows well, and is interesting. The book is well written, except for the recipes.

The leading disaster story of 1956 was the collision during a foggy Long Island summer night of the Italian liner Andrea Doria with the Swedish liner Stockholm. Here, journalist Goldstein (Mine Eyes Have Seen, 1997) offers the definitive history of the Doria's sinking and the rescue of 1,700 people. Despite the modest death toll (46), the Doria's story bears striking resemblance to the Titanic's. Both were luxury liners built to the most advanced technology, sailing too fast in a dangerous area with poor visibility. In both, it was clear soon after the collision that the ship would sink. Both evacuations, however, were chaotic. Despite many heroic exceptions, too many crewmembers panicked, crowding into the first lifeboats. Unlike the Titanic, the Doria carried enough boats, but half were unavailable. At any angle above 15 degrees, boats on the high side couldn't be launched, and the Doria's list quickly reached 18 degrees. Because boats on the low side had to be dropped into the sea before loading, passengers were forced to climb down rope ladders or jump into the water. If the Doria had sunk in the Titanic's two-and-a-half hours instead of eleven, the death toll would have been catastrophic. After the rescue came the usual recriminations, investigations, and lawsuits. Each side gave conflicting versions of the collision, so no blame could be assigned. Even today the Andrea Doria continues to exact a toll. Resting at 250 feet, the limit for a skilled diver, it receives a steady stream of visitors. They explore, extract souvenirs, and sometimes die, at the rate of nearly one per year.
Goldstein has interviewed a mass of participants and experts. The result: a detailed and authoritative history ranging from the background of the liners and the technical details of ship construction and transatlantic navigation to a gripping account of the collision, rescue, and aftermath. I recently read this book, and found it an amazing acount of the Doria's sinking. The book starts with a description of the voyage, then builds up to the climax- the capsize. The book gave a detailed account of what the passengers did in the final hours, what occured on the rescue ships, as well as the Stockholm, and the court battle later on. I would reccomend this book to anyone! Hey, I'm a kid, and I loved it! You will too!

LAST GREAT DOOMED LINER

The Andrea Doria was really the last great ocean liner disaster, coming as the ship gave way to the jet. Despite a double hull and two working radars, a collision took the lives of forty-six souls. It's belly sliced open, the Doria, considered by many to be the most beautiful ship, sank after eleven hours. Fortunately, over a thousand remaining on board were saved in the ensuing rescue, one of the largest in history. Like the Titanic, it demonstrated the limits of technology and showed disaster can happen at any time. But this played out very differently. No one was hurt in Titanic's collision, but most aboard perished as rescue came too late. By contrast Andrea Doria's deaths came in the accident itself. All others were saved in the 'desperate hours' described here.

Although a bit choppy at times, this is a book most will enjoy. As is so often the case, I found the memories chapter at the end to be one of the best. It is always fascinating to see what became of the people caught up in the action. The discussion of possible causes of the accident is good as well.

Focus on people makes the story come alive

Goldstein has taken a well known story and put a new face on it. Those of us old enough to remember the sinking of the Andrea Doria will match our long ago memories with fresh, new information which brings the story back as if it happened yesterday. Those of us who didn't know about this ship will find a facinating account focused on those aboard the ship. The technical details are sufficent; the confusion during the 'desperate hours' are brought alive; the people become very real. I recommend Goldstein's book to history buffs, ship buffs, and anyone who enjoys a good story, told very well.

Comprehensive book about web mining, although not technical

Since I started a new project on behavioral targeting in online advertising, I decided to buy Linoff and Berry's book: Mining the Web (Transforming Customer Data into Customer Value).

The book starts by briefly explaining data mining with a marketing point of view. The next chapter describes the three different approaches to mining the web: mining structure, mining usage patterns and mining content. In my case, I was mostly interested by mining usage patterns, for example web logs. The following chapters are very general and give an overview of online retailing, digital content, advertising, customer value, customer tracking, etc. One good point of the book is that it contains several short industry case studies. Although not technical, they help understand how things work in big industrial projects.

To conclude, Mining the Web is an interesting introduction for people interested in applying data mining techniques to the web. Altough this book answers the "what" question, it doesn't answer the "how". Since it is a non-technical book, you will definitely need other resources for a deeper understanding of the field. The advantage is that the book is easy and pleasant to read from the beginning to the end. If you are interested by the field, you should also consult Jesus Mena's book: Data Mining Your Website (although a little older).

I found this book to be most helpful and thorough, I was immediately inspired to practice these useful tips and easy to intuit instructions.
I continue to use it for reference as a resource manual. I highly encourage anyone just getting interested in the concept of data mining, anyone in sales, marketing, public relations, and analytics to start with this book first. After reading this book you will have a strong foundation into data mining applications and a vivid sense of direction on how to make it work for you personally!!!!

Another winner from a great team

I own Berry and Linoff's first two books on data mining (Data Mining Techniques and Mastering Data Mining); they're the best, and this book lives up to their standards. All three are great for not just teaching the technical stuff, but how and when to apply it to solve problems I really face at my company.
