The New Investment Superstars: 13 Great Investors and Their Strategies for Superior Returns, by Lois Peltz

Learn how these superstars invest, where they invest, what works--and what doesn't
Since people have been making money in the markets, investors and would-be investors have been fascinated with the money managers and traders who have extracted superior returns. In The New Investment Superstars, Lois Peltz examines fifteen of today's most successful investors by their area of expertise, including stock-picking, global macro trading, sector investing, and more. Readers will learn how these great investors approach the markets at a time when volatility is high and certainty low. From the thirty-five-year-old Lee Ainslie (Maverick Capital), dubbed the "Win-Win Investor" by Worth magazine, and Ken Griffin, the thirty-one-year-old who started his first hedge fund as a freshman at Harvard, to Lee Cooperman, long a star stockpicker at Goldman, we meet today's superior managers and learn how they do it.
Peltz reveals that these new stars are flexible traders who inherently understand that long-term wins come from recognizing that markets are ever-changing and that they must adapt. By reading about how they've succeeded and where they lost, investors will learn about market change, and how success is achieved.
Lois Peltz (New York, NY) was editor-in-chief of MAR/Hedge Funds, an investment performance reporting service, for eight years. She is now President and CEO of Investment Information Providers, an information services company that provides investment information services to the professional investment community.

From the Inside Flap
They are the elite, the crème de la crème, the Mozarts and da Vincis, the Einsteins and Michael Jordans of today's investment world. From among the thousands of hedge fund managers, they are the ones who, over the past decade, have risen above the rest to distinguish themselves. Although they are a diverse group in terms of age, background, investment strategy, and area of expertise, they all share an unquenchable passion for what they do and an undeniable genius for generating consistently high returns, year after year, under all conditions.

Now, The New Investment Superstars provides you with a unique opportunity to get to know these market masters and learn the original investment strategies they have used in many markets to outperform their peers.

From thirty-five-year-old Lee Ainslie (Maverick Capital), dubbed the "Win-Win Investor" by Worth magazine, to Leon Cooperman (Omega Advisors), Goldman Sachs' longtime star stockpicker, to the "trader's trader," David Tepper (Appaloosa Management), you'll meet today's top market movers and find out what makes them tick. Through a series of in-depth profiles, author Lois Peltz takes you inside their minds and their organizations. She reveals what motivates them and how they think. And she showcases their methods and examines what has worked for them in the past and what hasn't, what is working for them now and what isn't.

The thirteen managers featured in The New Investment Superstars were selected on the basis of a few basic criteria: Each manages at least $1 billion in assets, and each has matched or outperformed the S&P for at least seven years. Each is acknowledged by the investment community to be the best in a particular area of expertise-including stock-picking, global macro trading, sector investing, merger arbitrage, and eventdriven investing. And, as Lois Peltz reveals, each, throughout his or her career, has displayed an uncanny ability to adapt swiftly and decisively to changing market conditions.

In the final chapters, Peltz examines the new superstars from the other side of the equation-the investor's point of view. Working from interviews, she explores how well these new superstars have performed for institutions such as CalPERS, Swiss Life Insurance, and a large Japanese institution; for major endowments-including Stanford University, Wesleyan University, and Vassar College; and for private investors.

Don't miss this opportunity to meet the investment superstars of the new economy and learn the secrets to their phenomenal success.

Praise for The New Investment Superstars

"Lois Peltz's profiles of these outstanding money managers are interesting, insightful, and comprehensive. For anyone who is a serious investor in hedge funds, this book is invaluable."-Richard Elden, Chairman, Grosvenor Capital Management, LP

"Having access to the insights and analytical skills of Lois Peltz is like gaining entry into a great hedge fund after it has closed to new investors! Far too little has been written about hedge funds, and all too often private investors are fooled by the hype or mystified by the wildly disparate data on performance and categories. Lois has a journalist's insatiable curiosity and a financial professional's depth of knowledge. That combination makes for a fascinating read."-Charlotte B. Beyer, founder and CEO, Institute for Private Investors

"Well researched and illuminating. A must-read for serious institutional and high net worth investors. Perceptive insights into the minds and strategies of a gifted baker's dozen of superior hedge fund managers."-Lawrence Simon, President and Chief Executive Officer, Ivy Asset Management Corp.

"Lois Peltz offers fascinating insight into the hedge fund world and some of its key figures. The New Investment Superstars gives a fair and accurate description of some of the key events and individuals of recent years. This book should provide investors with enough insight to stop them from 'having to sleep with the lights on at night' worrying about some of these almost mythical figures in the business."-David Smith, Chief Investment Director, Global Asset Management

Waste of Time
By Tim Lieder
If you are familiar with Infovest21, a hedge fund news service that's really just a lot of fluff articles about old friends of Peltz, then you are familiar with Lois Peltz's writing style. Basically, she talks a lot about personalities, very little about the news and almost nothing practical concerning strategies or markets. Her writing style is boring and usually outsourced to employees and there's nothing in it that you can't find in a thousand other news services.

This book might have some of the same "virtues" were it not also hopelessly out of date. Most of these "superstars" are out of the investment business and a couple of them are in jail for ponzi schemes. THat might provide a little ironic shaudenfreud but it really doesn't. The writing style is so hideous that you really can't read it for very long without wanting to throw it in a fire somewhere.

Don't waste your time on this book or the news service by this woman. Just buy something intelligent instead.

A long awaited
By A Customer
complement to the John Train/Jack Schwager series of books on managers. This book measures up well with its well-regarded peers. Lois Peltz has collected interesting information on hedge fund manager, most of whom are unknown even to investment cognoscenti. They are in her book because of their stellar records, despite the low profile many share (due to strict marketing regs for these investment pools). For readers who want a peek behind the hedge fund curtain, this book is ideal. It captures the personalities and backgrounds of the managers, and it benefits from Peltz's analysis of commonalties and future thoughts on the industry. If you are investment professional looking to add a couple of nuggets to your repertoire, you might feel slightly let down (hence 4, not 5, stars). The eye opening aspect for me was the annual returns revealed for each of the managers. This information is not widely available, and the magnitude and consistency of the annual returns was amazing for several of the managers. The extent of and rationale behind leverage is explored as well. Overall, the book was excellent, and I was happy to add it to my extensive collection of investment related tomes.

An Immensely Valuable Book
By A Customer
It is rare to be able to read one book on a complex topic and have it contain information of use to both the novice and the veteran. Lois Peltz has done it in regard to hedge funds...the most erudite of investment arenas. Whether it be basic information (definitions, tables showing manager spin-offs, industry disasters) or advanced (the irony of having the objective of superior performance over the long-term being measured in 90 day intervals), this easily readable and fascinating treatise delivers. From her overview of superstar managers (including the counter-intuitive observation that they're not in it for the money but rather because they love the challenge) to the side-bars concluding each that allow the reader to compare highlights, the profiles are enlightening. Specific insights on managers (Bruce Kovner's analogy of managing money to painting, Paul Singer's analysis of model and herding risk, to Raj Rajaratnam's requirement that analysts performing due diligence fax in a daily "What I've learned" or risk not being reimbursed for their expenses) provide enormous understanding of each manager. Finally, her own perspective, including highlighting the issue of manager capacity, offers unusual help in selecting/understanding managers. A must-read!

Managing Six Sigma, A practical Guide to Understanding...
By A Customer
Since I am on the Six Sigma deployment team for my company, I have done a lot of reading on Six Sigma in the last two months. Mr. Breyfogle, as a companion to his book Implementing Six Sigma has really created a useful consultive book that fills in the blanks for planning and deploying a six sigma program. He even shares "how to's" in the areas such as project selection and team chartering. It is concise and clear. I recommend it to anyone who is thinking about or preparing to deploy Six Sigma in their organization.

Breakthrough Thinking and Practical Applications
By Robert Morris
Breyfogle and his co-authors explain that this book was written in response to numerous requests for a book which would "help management decide if they should implement Six Sigma" and then "guide them through the process." In Breyfogle's previously published Implementing Six Sigma, he introduced Smarter Six Sigma Solutions (or S4). Were I to provide a copy of that book to the CEOs with whom I work, few (if any) would read it. Perhaps a few would pass it along for someone else to read. After that, who knows? (Many of the CEOs I know confuse dumping with delegating.) It is not damning with faint praise to suggest that this is an excellent book but one which has a much narrower focus and provides much less content than does its predecessor.
"The purpose of this book is to build awareness of the wise application of Six Sigma tools and how they can be important to the `big picture.'" The authors achieve that purpose. The material is carefully organized within four Parts: Why Six Sigma (How Six Sigma Compares to Other Quality Initiatives, Six Sigma Background and Fundamentals, and Six Sigma Needs Assessment); Six Sigma Metrics (Numbers and Information, Crafting insightful Metrics, and Performance Measurement); Six Sigma Business Strategy (deployment Alternatives, Creating a Successful Six Sigma Infrastructure, Training and Implementation, and finally, Project Selection, Sizing, and Other Techniques; and Applying Six Sigma (manufacturing Applications, Service/Transactional Applications, Development Applications, and finally, Need for Creativity, Invention, and Innovation). The Glossary and References sections follow and are first-rate.
Because I am a non-technician, I found the concepts and applications discussed in this book easier to grasp than those explained in its predecessor, Implementing Six Sigma. My guess (only a guess) is that the same would be true of senior-level executives who are also non-technicians. The authors quite carefully help their reader to understand how Six Sigma differs from other quality initiatives while correctly noting that Six Sigma should not replace other initiatives. Rather, it is and should be perceived as "a tactical methodology to determine the best approach to a given situation/process." In Chapter 1, they go on to observe that the success of Six Sigma "is linked to qa set of cross-functional metrics that lead to significant improvements in customer satisfaction and bottom-line benefits. Organizations do not necessarily need to use all of the measurements listed (often within typical Six Sigma programs). It is most important to choose the best set of services for a situation metrics that yield insight into a situation or process." I provide these brief excerpts to indicate the precision and clarity of the authors' writing style as well as to attract attention to several key points they emphasize.
One of the book's greatest value-added benefits is provided from a series of Tables. They range from "The Ten Myths of Six Sigma" (Table 1.1) and "Deming's Fourteen Points" (Table 1.2) through "The 21-Set Integration of the Tools" (Table 1.5) and "Six Sigma Needs Checklist" (Table 3.2) to "Personality Traits of Creative Individuals" identified by Sternberg and Lubart (Table 14.3). The authors end their book as follows: "As global competition increases and the rate of technological change accelerates, there will be tremendous social turmoil; as the uneducated and unprepared secede from the expanding economy. Those with the capability and desire to keep pace with radical change will find virtually limitless opportunity, growth, and prosperity." Frankly, I was surprised when reading these concluding remarks because, at so many points throughout the book's narrative, the authors seem almost wholly preoccupied with explaining strategies which leverage various technologies to maximize ROI. Then I reviewed what I had read and what I had learned, realizing that even a system as cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective as S4 is certain to fail without sufficient "human capital." That is, those to whom the authors refer. People who are advocates, indeed evangelists.
Heaven knows, the authors of this book are highly analytical but they are also passionate about the difference they can help to make in organizations which need "a practical guide to understanding, assessing, and implementing the strategy that yields bottom-line success." I commend them on what they achieve in this book...also, and of greater importance, on what their book can help others to achieve.

Be VERY careful in buying this book.
By A Customer
If you plan to "do" with 6 sigma, this book is probably not for you. Until now, I bought any John Wiley & Son, Publishers book on the premise that they always published quality....this book will make me more wary of what they intend the book to achieve (sales of more books or education of the reader). The books title leads one to expect it to be about managing 6 sigma and it may come closest to that objective, to use it's term, from 30,000 feet. Otherwise, it is mainly a marketing piece for a prior book by Breyfogle (Implementing Six Sigma). Dozens of times and sometimes two or 3 times on the same page the reader is treated to this: "EWMA techniques can be combined with engineering process control(EPC)to give insight into when a process should be adjusted. The mechanics of conducting an EWMA and EPC are described in Chapter 36 of Breyfogle (1999) Implementing Six Sigma."
The glossary and list of symbols are inadequate. The problem with the glossary is murkey unclear definitions.
Finally, the book is redundant with regards to listing repeatedly the "21 steps" it suggests to implement Six Sigma projects. Based on the table of contents, this should have been an excellent book. Evaluated on content, what a disappointment!

Warning: Text contains many errors
By minnzo
+ Note: This review was originally written for another book from this author, but touches on my experience with this text as well.

It is mind-boggling how one can have so many mistakes in a textbook like this. This book was required for our Biostatistics II class, and I am really displeased by all of the mistakes. What is the worst offense is that some of the answers for test questions are wrong. For example, the one way ANOVA problem 7.21 has the wrong F-statistic: the wrong answer. Others in the class have complained about this text as well. This is simply amazing to me, and leaves me not trusting much of the text in this book.

His other book "Health and Numbers" is just as terrible; the professor that used that book for class made a list of the mistakes they found, and us students in that class found many more along the way. I ran into another statistics book that takes all of the procedures step-by-step and really made it simple for me. This book, and his other are not recommended.

Strategic leaders at NPOs should read this book
By Jeff Lippincott
The authors of this book do a nice job of condensing the content of their book into a diagram at page 15 that they entitle: "The Strategic Planning Process." Then they explain the diagram chapter by chapter. The chapters are full of good information and lots of exhibits, worksheets, and real-life examples. Job well done! I recommend to anybody interested in preparing a business plan for a for-profit or a nonprofit to read this book. And I also recommend all strategic leaders (i.e. executive directors, board chairs, and CEOs) read this book. It should be helpful to them in performing their job duties.

The book basically points out the following series of questions and/or tasks a strategic leader much consider when doing his or her job:

1. What is the organization doing now?
2. What are its strengths?
3. What are its weaknesses?
4. Are we heading in the direction we want?
5. What must we change to get back on track?
6. Prepare a written plan for change.
7. Implement the plan for change.
8. Monitor the implementation.
9. Reevaluate the plan for change.

I would have liked the book better if the authors had more accurately described what a business plan is, and what it is used for. The authors seem to think that a business plan is something that a for-profit entity creates in order to get loans from lenders or capital from investors. While it is true this is one of the reasons for writing a business plan, the more important reason a plan is written is that it acts as a roadmap for the leader and management of the business to follow towards success. Most businesses that do not have a written business plan are doomed for failure. NPOs without a business plan will probably not be successful either.

Another shortcoming I found in the book was that the authors do not point out that NPOs need a "business plan" just as much as does a for-profit. NPOs also need a roadmap to follow. Whether the authors want to admit it or not, a business plan for an NPO is pretty much the same document as a business plan for an organization seeking profits. The difference between the two plans exists in the marketing section - and that is the only difference. NPOs need to market to their customers/clients and to philanthropists that have a connection and commitment to their cause, whereas for-profit businesses need only market to their customers/clients.

Any NPO should have a business plan starting on the day it comes into existence. The strategic planning process described in this book can be used to create that written business plan. Therefore, this book is for NPO founders. After the business plan exists and it is being used as a roadmap to success, then the effectiveness of the plan must be monitored regularly. When it appears the plan is not proving effective, then the strategic planning process described in this book should be used again to implement change to get the NPO back on track to success.

Strategic leadership is a critical role that any leader must play, and if he or she can't, then she has no business assuming a leadership role. A "leader" who does not know how to perform strategic leadership is merely a manager, not a leader. I think it is a sad state of affaires that so many executive directors and board chairs are clueless when it comes to strategic planning - thus they are just managers. The authors, by writing this book, have created a resource for wanta-be leaders to use to learn how to do an important and critical part of their job - lead strategically.

Excellent Resource for Non-profit Boardmembers
By Boardmember
This book is a step by step guide with suggested modifications to fit the needs of any group. The worksheets, included on an accompanying CD, are very useful. I highly recommend this book to anyone involved in strategic planning for any organization - public, private or non-profit.

For those serious about strategic planning!
By Tracy V.
A great book that does what many non-profit management books don't -- talks about dollars and cents as well as need and impact. CD is underutilized (compared with, say, the CD included with "Non-Profit Kit for Dummies"), but the worksheet concept is good. Their "do either this OR this" might be confusing for novices. Not too far of a stretch to connect this with a "balanced scorecard" evaluation. CompassPoint's Dual Bottom-Line Matrix (p. 188), while complicated-sounding, actually should clarify decision-making for many non-profit managers.

Much more than just games
By Ehren Paul Olson
We just got this book and we are already playing these games all of the time! The design of the book makes each game simple to understand, most of them don't need any special set up or props, and the activities are divided into age groups (2-7, 8-12, 13-15, 16+ and adult) But the book is about much more than fun activities, it is about a whole way of approaching life to find the joy in everyday situation (she includes activities to deal with getting dumped by a teenage boyfriend, on how to make important carrer choices, and on how to avoid the blues, even when they are the result of something very sad). One game I especially like is for ages 2-7, called "young ones" in the book. It is called Grouchy Food. The game is for when your child is grouchy or sad or in some other unplesant mood you say to them "Hmm, you look like you are in a grouchy mood today, I better adjust the lunch menu so you can eat what grouchy people eat. What do grouchy people eat, anyway? Worms, probably." Then you make spagehetti (we added food die until it was brown). The author notes that sad people sometimes need a little blue food coloring in their eggs, "lots of water to drink so they have extra for their tears," and "gental" pudding for dessert. How could any kid stay upset after that?! According to Barbara Sher laughter is an "organic, free, all-natural blues buster" and you and your kids will find plenty to laugh about with this book on hand.

Editorial Review that was in the Chinaberry catalog:
By barbara sher
"Imagine a book that you can take down from the shelf whenever your nerves are fried, your six-year-old is angrily pushing the toddler down the stairs, and your teen is holed up in his room with a broken heart. One book, small and unassuming, holds such a wealth of wisdom, with games/activities/ritual to cultivate joy and well-being, no matter what is happening. The first chapter offers ways to nurture your own spirit so that you can be present and more joyful in facing the day with your children. then the spirit games begin, all to create more fun and smiles every day; " doing a 360 circle" together of appreciation, time races to handle resistance, getting out the door, writing yourself letters to receive days later if you are blue, "Mom Gone Nuts" and 'Finding the Grumpy Bug". One of my favorites is the "Emergency Relief Box" filled with photos and memories of joyful times, to pull out on gloomy days. There are games/activities for healing sadness, anger, and fear, for building confidence and trust, and for learning compassion and new ways of responding the the situations life brings us. "All shall be well" is the wisdom woven into these pages, especially if you are having fun along the way! Best of all, these wise ways include toddlers to teens, so that this book will be a trusted and wise companion through all the growing-up years. I can't recommend it enough."

Inside Cisco: The Real Story of Sustained M&A Growth, by Ed Paulson

An insider reveals the core strategies behind Cisco's phenomenal success

Most savvy business observers agree that the major component in Cisco's phenomenal growth has been their unwavering commitment to expanding their product line through aggressive acquisitions. Since 1995, the "New Goliath," as Cisco is known throughout the business and finance communities, has acquired more than sixty companies. In this groundbreaking book, a Silicon Valley veteran, Ed Paulson, uses his strong connections to Cisco's management to reveal the M&A gospel according to Cisco.

Paulson explores how Cisco has used acquisitions to stay ahead of its competitors, analyzes their strategies and proven methods for incorporating new companies seamlessly, positively, and profitably. Paulson reveals the centerpiece of Cisco's acquisition strategy-one that is company-focused, culturally compatible, and retains staff. He examines how Cisco executives determine if a target company is compatible with Cisco's corporate culture and strategic outlook and describes the extraordinary lengths to which these executives will go to gain the loyalty of acquired people. This book details the Cisco methodology and illustrates how it can be applied to companies across industries.

Ed Paulson (Chicago, IL) is President of Technology and Communications, Inc., a business and technology consulting firm and a visiting professor at DePaul University's School for New Training. He is a Silicon Valley veteran with more than two decades of experience and the author of numerous business and technology books, most recently, The Technology M&A Guidebook (Wiley: 0-471-36010-4).

Amazon.com Review
No matter what happens in the future with the tech sector in general or to Cisco Systems in particular, the company that made the router almost a household name will be known forever as a bellwether behemoth in the networking industry--and one who got that way largely through a shrewd acquisition strategy. Inside Cisco, by veteran Silicon Valley entrepreneur Ed Paulson, examines how the company nimbly absorbed 70 firms since 1993 and, at least until the postmillennial tech crash, managed to leverage the people and technology it added into impressive, continual advancement. "In fact," Paulson writes, "the company has been so successful with its acquisitions that the industry created a new term for Cisco's type of research and development approach: acquisition and development." With an eye toward making this agile, adaptive strategy accessible to others, Paulson analyzes the practice and rationale behind it and then assesses how portable its elements are to other companies and industries. Explorations of everything from due diligence to the integration of personnel, products, and production are supplemented by specific examples, comments from people directly involved, and Paulson's own experienced perspective. --Howard Rothman

From Publishers Weekly
Once the gold-plated standard for how to succeed on the Internet, Cisco Systems has since lost some of its luster. But even though the company's stock price has dropped, Paulson (The Technology M&A Guidebook) makes a convincing case for still using Cisco as a model for how other companies can manage their M&A (merger and acquisition) growth. For one, Cisco buys companies not just when it is trying to expand or protect itself against potential competitors, but rather "as an integral part of its system," thus looking ahead for future growth. Indeed, Cisco's acquisitions have been prolific, and the author explains who the company targets for acquisitions and why. Unlike many acquirers, Cisco tries to retain most of the personnel during an acquisition, and Paulson shows how that makes good sense. According to Cisco CEO John Chambers, "If you pay $500,000 to $2 million per person... and you lose 30 to 40 percent of those people in the first two years, you've made a terrible decision." Paulson shows most of Cisco's major acquisitions and the buying price per employee, which is appropriate for a book on M&A's, of course, but he is too meandering to offer specific, helpful information. Those interested in refining their company's M&A strategies won't find too much here to help them; Paulson makes a great case why Cisco is good at what it does, but aphorisms like "[Cisco] listens closely to its customers" are less than effective. Such lines suggest that the book is targeted more at a general business audience, but how many of those readers actually need advice on how to buy companies?

Good application of an already sound methodology
By Robert Hadsworth
Paulsen does a commendable job in clearly explaining the Cisco methodology which John Chambers apparently adapted from the M&A strategists Clemente and Greenspan. This orientation, coined as market-focused and detailed in "Winning at Mergers & Acquisitions" seems to have been employed rather broadly throughout Cisco. Similar to Clemente/Greenspan's core methodology which analyzes the people, products and processes from strategy through integration, Paulsen explores the integration at Cisco of personnel, products, and production. It's hard to ignore the incredible similarity or get beyond the fact that so much of the guidance has already been introduced to the genre by Clemente and Greenspan in articles, white papers, and books over the last decade. Still for those who have read Winning at Mergers, there remain many interesting anecdotes and discussions in Inside Cisco. What I find most interesting is Cisco's incorporation of M&A into every facet of its being, and its quest for culturally compatible targets. Paulsen stresses that this is a mjor reason for acquisition success and I agree. John Chambers has developed an efficient and successful machine that -through no fault of his own - became unraveled as his industry did. I wonder how a share price in the teens will impact the strategy in the future. Nevertheless, the book is well written and therefore keeps the reader interested.

A textbook for M&A managers
By Manuel Vexler
Please allow me to disclose my bias... I am a former Cisco M&A, or as Ed Paulson would say a
Cisco A&D (Acquisitions and Development).
And a disclaimer: These comments are my own, and represent my own opinions, not Cisco Systems's.
To position Ed's book, let's first look at the current body of M&A research.
"We know surprisingly little about mergers and acquisitions, despite the
buckets of ink spilled on the topic. In fact our collective knowledge can be
summed up in a few short sentences", noted Joseph Bower in his article "Not
all M&A are alike - and that's what matters" (Harvard Business Review, March
2001). A year later, Roy Harris wrote in his article "A lesson before
buying: University executive-education programs tackle one of the business
world's toughest jobs: Teaching M&A",
"You feel the question taking shape in the opening lecture of Robert
Holthausen's "Mergers and Acquisitions" class. As the Wharton professor
recounts the problems with deal-making today, ticking off two dozen reasons
why mergers fail--from valuation errors to culture clashes--the discouraging
statistics fly by on the screen behind him. McKinsey says 74 percent of
deals fail to create shareholder value, KPMG says it's 83 percent. At last,
the inevitable hand shoots up in front: 'Is this going to be a class about
why we shouldn't acquire anybody?'" (May, 2002, CFO The Magazine for Senior
Financial Executives)
Paulson's "Inside Cisco: The Real Story of Sustained M&A Growth" provides a
well researched analysis on how to do successful M&As. I hope the book will
be used as a textbook at many American and international executive M&A
programs.

Insightful!
By Rolf Dobelli
There's no reason to beat around the bush: This is not an objective history of Cisco. It is an unabashedly adulatory look at one of the most influential companies of the New Economy. If you're looking for a critical assessment of Cisco's business model and execution, look elsewhere. That does not mean that you should ignore Inside Cisco, however. On the contrary, we from getAbstract strongly recommend this book for its detailed dissection of Cisco's acquisition methodology, from its target identification and selection to integration and employee retention. Anyone in business would do well to read this book, study these processes and make them their own.
