At first glance, Tech-Venture seems like a nostalgic flashback to early 2000. A quick skim through its pages reveals statements like: "Old economy valuation methods, such as discounted cash flows and comparable company multiples, are ineffective for New Economy companies." But don't be fooled, this book is more than just an obsolete relic of the bubble. Once you get past the sections devoted to high-tech start-ups, you'll find a thoughtful examination of technology's role in such critical 21st-century business mainstays as customer relationship management and supply-chain management. For this intelligent analysis, along with equally interesting chapters identifying technologies likely to spawn future revolutions, we from getAbstract recommend this book to managers in business development and technology.

TechVenture packs more insightful analysis into every chapter than any other book I've read recently. The chapters on Value and Wireless E-Business alone are worth the price of the book. It's good to see a realistic look toward profitability (at last!) and to have that realism temper a forward-looking work like this is a pleasure indeed. Bravo!

Great Text Teaches 30+ years

With all due respect to the negative reviews, this book is the best treatment of Classical Electrodynamics at the GRADUATE PHYSICS PH.D. level that exists. It is clearly written from two points of view, that of a classical special functions treatment of the subject that is interlaced with deep insights from the perspective of a Physicist. Both of which are beyond standard treatments and rely upon one another. Thus it can be difficult to approach if unprepared with a thorough background in both special function theory and undergraduate elctro-magnetism under your belt. It is necessary to complete every problem to achieve the basic fundamental level required of most of the top ranked graduate programs. Average time per problem should be between 1/2-3 hours of hard work that clearly reinforces and extends the subject matter. Approaching this subject outside of a graduate program is possible with significant help and other resources. After nearly 30 years, I have returned to my copy time and again for help in conducting research. While somewhat outdated, the use of Gaussian units was typical of theorists as it made keeping track of annoying units and symbols easier. Since there is a lengthy conversion guide in the appendix, one sees little issue with using it to convert to another system. In short, all complaints should be ignored.

It's About Time

It's about time someone wrote about what really makes Berkshire Hathaway unique. There are so many books on Warren Buffett which attempt to reorganize his annual letters that it is really refreshing to read something new. This book has great content and really delves into the Berkshire compound money machine. It is a required read for investors as well as managers.

Great book about the inner workings of BRK

Skim through the back of the 2002 annual report, and you'll see a list of the dozens of operating subsidiary companies within Berkshire. To my knowledge, this book covers the managers of these companies in more depth than any other book. It is essential to learn about these managers because among them will be chosen the successors of Mr. Buffett. Personally, reading this book gives me confidence in the future of Berkshire in the post-Buffett/Munger era. I especially liked the chapter on Ajit Jain, who has not been covered by other books. This book is an absolute must read for those planning on holding their Berkshire shares forever.

The *best* book for the money

I am a cake designer by trade and I'm getting ready to teach my first college level course and this is the book that I will be using for my students.

The reason for this is simple: value for money with a clear understanding of baking principles.

Most professional tomes like the Gisslen or Friberg book will set you back 50-75 dollars a book. You can have both of Amendola's books for the cost of just one. Sure, they might not have all the pretty pictures, but why go out and spend hundreds of dollars that you don't need to.

And to set the record straight, I completely disagree with the person who complained that the books were boring and too scientific. The act of baking is not an art - it's all about science and if you think that's boring then you shouldn't be baking.

A good baker and cake designer will know and understand why cakes are made the way they are, otherwise, he or she will not have the knowledge needed to overcome the problems and issues that every baker will face at some point in his or her career, whether professional or home baker.

If you're a home baker and you want a less "science-driven" book then I'd suggest The Baker's Dozen. If you love cake and really want to understand what it's all about then you can't beat Joseph Amendola - he is a master.

Understanding Baking gives the student baker all the baking science he or she will actually ever need in day to day operations. This new edition has a much friendlier tone and eliminates a great of the repetition and overly arcane or dated material that existed in the previous editions. Theory and concepts are related to actual products much more clearly. Rees/Amendola lucidly and concisely explain the chemistry of ingredient interaction, baking physics and supply useful ingredient definitions. The reference tables and troubleshooting guides are helpful and clear. The new information on wild yeast starter/artisan bread is timely and interesting as is the discussion of trans and cis fats. Any pastry chef can tell you that the most complicated presentations begin with a good grounding in the basics. From there, it's up to you. Industrial baking, which this edition, for the most part, sidesteps, is now so specialized, automated and artificially preserved you need an whole set of encyclopedias to understand the processes that are usually performed by a machine. On the other hand, with this book and it's companion volume, The Baker's Manual (also recently revised with many, many appealing new formulas), you could start a fine little pastry shop. It impowers you to be the best baker you can be.

I received this book when I started culinary school and by far it is the book I use the most when I have questions about baking. It throughly explains the baking process, the ingredients, and science behind it all. If you ever wanted to know anything about baking, this is the book to get.

He has contributed numerous articles to Sports Turf magazine and received the magazine?s "Baseball Diamond of the Year" award in 1995 for reconstructing Boardman High School?s field in Ohio.

JEFF KRANS is Professor of Agronomy in the Golf and Sports Turf Management program at Mississippi State University. He has conducted extensive turfgrass research, as well as developed, patented, and commercialized four turf-type bermudagrass cultivars.

MIKE GOATLEY is Professor of Agronomy in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences at Mississippi State University. He has conducted turfgrass research in the areas of plant nutrition, plant growth regulation, and soil modification.

Good reference learned a lot

Book is good but the title is a little deceiving. Quite often it states, Paraphrasing, "buy our other book if you really want more specifics on field design". However I did learn alot and it is a good reference.

The Best Technical Reference on Baseball Fields I could find
By The Ideator
I used this technical reference book for a course in Contracts and Procurement, in which I had to write detailed specifications for a baseball park. These specifications were part of a Request for Proposal to a fictitious group of general contractors.

This book left no stone unturned, educating me on all aspects of building and maintaining a ball diamond. My professor, who had seen many similar papers before, was impressed and I received a perfect mark.

I also interviewed a general contractor who was building 8 baseball fields, and found I was able to talk intelligently with him, and knew all the various terms and types of materials used in a baseball field, as a direct result of reading this book.

I was impressed with the overall knowledge of the authors, starting with how to grade the park for maximum drainage and playability, fencing, types of turf required for various weather zones in North America, pest and weed prevention, layout, dimensions, equipment used for maintaining and marking the field -- there wasn't one thing I wanted to know that I couldn't find in this book.

I recommend it very highly.
