Not a good introductory book for matrix structural analysis

This textbook is more of reference textbook for someone who has already learned the fundamentals of matrix structural analysis. If you have never taken a course on matrix structural analysis and you are looking to learn the fundamentals, do not get this book. The authors wrote the book assuming the reader already has a background in the subject; most of the examples skip a lot of steps and are presented with little explanation. If you are looking for a good book on the fundamentals of matrix structural analysis, I highly recommend "Matrix Analysis of Framed Structures, by Weaver and Gere, 3rd edition."

Must have if you work with non-linear frame structures

This is one of the best books that I have come across on matrix structural analysis. The sections on non-linear topics are excellent. I can see where the book might be a little too advanced for someone with only a sophomore year mechanics of materials course completed, in that case there are other books that are cheaper and cover the basics in more detail.

Very good book

I will say that this book was used in my Matrix Methods of Structural Analysis class at the University of Nevada, Reno in the spring 2013 semester.
Even though the class didn't cover any of the non-linear topics in this textbook, this book was a great book for all the linear topics that were addressed. If you read the book carefully enough on all the pages, the information will start to soak in and make sense. The only drawback I see to this book was that examples built off of results of examples in previous chapters.
The MASTAN software program can be downloaded from the website that the textbook points out, and it is completely free. A faculty that teaches a structural steel design course developed this software.
Now I did use this book for this class, but I used my Structural Analysis book by Hibbeler in addition; for the Hibbeler book was for my first structural analysis class.
If any civil or structural engineering students are reading this review, just one thing I want to mention. Please take an extended structural analysis class right after you take your first one, for the knowledge will be fresher on your mind and you will have a smooth transition.
My only real question is, when is this author going to publish a 3rd edition? This edition is over ten years old.
