Elements of Photonics

In sixteen chapters in two volumes, "Elements of Photonics" by Keigo
Iizuka exhibits his passion for teaching the facts about light, the
devices with which one controls it, and the mathematics by which to
express its behavior. The book has careful definitions and step by
step explanations beautifully illustrated. It builds its mathematical
parts on a basic knowledge of Maxwell's equations and the Fourier
transform which the reader is assumed to possess; however, the
mathematical exposition never loses touch with the laboratory, and
explanations in terms of basic geometry are offered side by side with
the more mathematical exposition.
A great strength of the book is the definition of terms one finds
in the photonics literature. Another is that many topics
are presented from both a simple geometric point of view and
a more mathematical point of view, so the reader can choose
how to learn. A third is the wealth of superb drawings and diagrams.
The author's preface gives a helpful orientation and the index is
complete and well organized as an aid to using the book as a reference
book.
When I tried using the book to learn about lithium niobate phase
shifters I found the explanation so good that I started using
"Elements of Photonics" as the first place to resolve the
many mysteries that I encounter in working my way into photonics.
So far it has exceeded my expectations on three out four other topics
that I tried. While the field of photonics offers quantum effects and
complex interferometers omitted in this book, for a foundation in
photonics "Elements of Photonics" is head and shoulders the best
available.

This book will help bring your trading to the next level. Eventually the only limit to your bank account is your own mind, and Kiev identifies common issues faced by traders and how to deal with these.

Good for Short Term Traders, but...

Kiev's thesis rests upon the premise of setting profit goals and then trying to hit them. The idea is that you will be compelled to refine everthing about your trading and put away all excuses in order to reach this goal -- a sort of goal as catalyst for improvement theory. While this seems like good advice I am afraid that for longer term traders it runs headlong into the "only take what the market gives you" truism. If I set a goal of $10,000 per month, what do I do when the market goes nowhere for four weeks? You guessed it, I would try to force things. Not good. So unless you are willing to accept the thesis of setting specific profit goals you won't gain that much from this book. A much better treatment of general trading psychology can be found in Mark Douglas' "Trading in the Zone".

A good read and I am a better money maker because of it.

This book isn't just applicable to traders. Fundamental, research driven investors will find the focus on risk management and risk taking equally helpful. The discussion of how an investor's emotions and tendancies can interfere with a profitable strategy is unique to Dr. Kiev's work and contradicts the old maxim of "don't let emotions affect your decisions." Emotions are part of everyday life and we have to find ways to benefit from them, not be hurt by them. I found Dr.Kiev's use of trading examples particularly helpful in helping me to identfy when my emotions are interferring with my strategy. More importantly, he provides tools and guidance that can help the reader improve their stock picking and portfolio management performance.

But this is less an account of the trader's changing arena than the story of Lewis Borsellino, a fist-shaking Italian American from Chicago's West Side whose grit and determination helped him become one of the top traders in the Standard & Poor futures pit. "When the world around me goes nuts, I become more sane. The wilder the market gets, the more disciplined I become." He credits this focus to his tough but compassionate Italian American father, a truck driver with a penchant for lightening the loads of his deliveries. "I do what I do so you don't have to," says the elder Borsellino, prior to getting busted by the feds for hijacking a million-dollar shipment of silver.

Shedding his father's mobster ties, Borsellino quickly moves up the trading ranks, establishing a position--literally--on the second step of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Overcoming Adversity in Trading Through Strength and Courage

When I first picked up the book, I thought it was a promotional piece for a trader turned fund manager. I was wrong. I realized this was from a real trader, not an expert. Having lost much money from following technical experts' advice, I've learned only to read the masters. Those who want a technical book, don't look here. But know that if you want to win and win big, you may want to read this. I also learned that you don't have to nit-pik every psychological thought to arrive at masterful trading, as the psychologists of trading would have you believe.
I was totally hooked into the story of his life's joys and sorrows. I couldn't put it down--I read it in one sitting. Some books have interviewed the best traders with similar conclusions from their experiences, but rarely do they provide the insight into their minds. Traders lives parallel. The book captured many of my own experiences. This was a heroic story describing overcoming in one of the world's most difficult occupations.
I used to wonder what made a Jesse Livermore tick? What in his trading career made him commit suicide? (I assure you, it was not a trading rule he broke.) This is a rare book because it's an authentic, open-hearted, unabashed, no-holds-back account into the soul of one of the best pit traders in all time and his trial by fire, of a reality more dramatic than any fiction story.
The Dalai Lama says that we have traveled so far into the stars, to other planets, to the moon, but we have not looked inwardly. We have not traveled into our hearts, into the domain of mind. When one considers the intense nature of trading emotions including pain and suffering, illusion and confusion, greed and fear, ego and humility, shame and anger, this journey, whether you travel or not, is the journey of all traders, captured par excellence in this book. It's a story about an Italian American turning prejuidice into riches, about a soul turning defeat into victory. If you're new to the game, this is what it takes.

Much of it is entertaining, but overall a disappoinment.

This book contains many interesting (and some amusing) anecdotes from the life of a very unique individual. It also gives a good picture of the controlled chaos in the (futures) pits.
However, the book is very repetitious. The entire first half of the book can be summarized as follows: My father loved his family and felt forced to provide for us in ways that society rewards with jail sentences. My father taught my brother and me never to walk away from a fight. Along with other things he taught us, this is what has allowed me to be the success I am today.
Second, I was expecting (hoping?) for more than just a superficial treatment of the psychology and strategies used in trading. Those looking for a "how to" book will not find it here.
Third, there were a couple of chapters devoted to Mr. Borsellino's opinions as to how the Chicago futures exchanges must adapt to and incorporate electronic trading. These to me were quite technical and uninteresting, and seemed out of place here.
Finally, the last couple of chapters seemed a bit too much like an ad for the newly-formed Borsellino Capital Management firm. In fact, Mr. Borsellino writes, "I want my investors who read this book to know me as a trader with unique expertise in an increasingly unpredictable market and to know me as a man."
I don't want to discourage anyone from reading this book. I did enjoy most of it. However, you should be clear as to what the book is, and what it isn't.

A brutally boring ego trip

As best I can figure, Borsellino wrote this book for three reasons-ego gratification, to get publicity to help raise funds for his money management firm, and to try to capitalize on the trend of day/electronic trading books landing on business best-sellers lists.
Borsellino offers absolutely no insight into his trading strategy beyond what can be found in any trading primer-the trend is your friend, use stops, don't use too much leverage. He was far short of having enough material for a book, so the same stories are repeated over and over, while other ideas are milked for all their worth. One less-than-memorable passage: "...In the high times of 1987, I made $4.5 million, solely by trading my own money. I earned no investment fees or commissions. Every dollar I earned was the profit I made by trading my own account. I was among the fortunate ones who made a lot of money in 1987..."
The main message of this book is, "I'm great and my father, the mobster, was great."
It's also a work of fiction: "...Together, [my assistant] and I instituted a lot of innovations in pit trading. We hired a clerk just to help us check trades...Now virtually everybody has a trade checker in the pit..." So Borsellino invented trade checking, eh? Why does this sound like Al Gore's claim that he invented the Internet?
Finally, Borsellino has a chip on his shoulder the size of a boulder. He tells many tales of the fights he's had in the pit. He claims that Italian-Americans can't get a fair shake in this country, that they are discriminated against everywhere. Basically he's a hot-headed blow-hard who blames others for his own violent temper. "It all started when he hit me back!"
The bottom line is--don't waste your time or your money. A much better choice would be Buzzy Schwartz's book "Pit Bull."

At last a book that makes some sense of the biotech sector! The author, George Wolff has a very straightforward approach, starting with the big picture of the industry's development and then getting down to specifics about market behavior such as the reasons for the sector's incredible volatility. Wolff's analysis involves breaking the sector down in Four Tiers. Each behaves somewhat differently with the lowest Tier being both the riskiest and the cheapest to buy into. Tier One encompasses the well-known majors such as Amgen, which are relatively safe but less exciting plays. I think Wolff has set out a framework of understanding that allows investors to discriminate among the companies to find a reasonable balance of growth potential and security. Most of the book is strictly about investment analysis but the second part of it (Book 2) tries to decode the scientific background. I like his analogy, comparing the workings of DNA and cellular machinery to the innards of a computer. It's a clear enough explanation to convince me that I finally understand this abstract stuff. All in all, a good, illuminating read for people like me who are interested in the industry and where it's going. The investment advice is sensible and has a reasonable tone....not a "get rich quick book." I know there's another book on the market that looks strictly at the medical side of the biotech business. I like the fact the Wolff has gone beyond that to look at the ways the industry can affect a lot of other major sectors such as energy, chemicals, textiles and so on. Wolff believes biotech is going to become the biggest industry in the world and now that I see where the industry is headed, I think he's right.

I highly recommend this important book! You would have to be living under a rock to have not heard about the great advances made recently in genetics and biotechnology. The potential for a cure to cancer, the ability to fix previously incurable diseases, and many other medical advancements are becoming closer to reality because of biotechnology. But where could an investor go to educate himself on the many issues facing this industry? Nowhere. Until now. Investors who can sort through the myriad of scientific, corporate and government issues relating to this industry will be have a great advantage over the rest of us. George Wolff's highly readable primer gives its readers this advantage.
As an investment advisor, I know the great potential of biotech. All you need to do is look at the multi-hundred billion dollar market capitalization of the Mercks and Pfizers to know that success in drug development holds the key to untold riches. But which companies will get there? How do you as an investor approach this very complex field?
George Wolff's Biotech Investor's Bible thoughtfully lays out the key issues an investor must be familiar with. Product pipelines, alliances with major drug companies, strategies companies use to speed up FDA trials, valuation techniques, and a myriad of other important issues are thoroughly explained by Wolff in plain English.
A huge run-up in biotech stock prices in early 2000 was sparked by the expectation that the human genome would be mapped. The bubble burst in March 2000, leaving many of the hottest stocks broken and battered. The theoretical excitement however, has given way now to a market that is focused on the companies that have an aggregate of several hundred drugs in various stages of FDA trials. Many of these stocks have recovered and in some cases gone on to new highs. Wolff provides not only the overview of the industry you need, but also the means to determine which individual companies show the greatest promise.
Without this book and its comprehensive explanation of biotech investing, I would never attempt to participate in this market. But you should ask yourself: can you afford not to? With the tech sector in a shambles, with the stock market stagnating in general, what will bring on the next high-growth trend? A strong case for biotech is made by the author. The fast pace of research, the growing base of scientific knowledge in the field, and the several current winners like Amgen which sports a $65 billion market capitalization, all clearly point to the future development of many new, effective treatments which will be brought forth at an ever-increasing rate for decades to come. I for one plan to stay informed and involved with my investment dollars.

Don't invest in Biotechs without reading this book

Like most people, I have read with interest many of the articles written in the last year about new biotech medical breakthrus, human genome project updates and the wild stock market performance of so many of these dynamic companies -- read, but not really understood. I was even tempted to invest in these cutting-edge technologies, but had no idea where to begin to research this specialized field. Until now... The Biotech Investor's Bible was a surprisingly easy and compelling read and loaded with an amazing amount of useful research material and background information. As a non-scientist, I was relieved by how clearly and even entertainingly Mr. Wolff writes about these companies and about the investment process. His enthusiasm is contagious. I found the "8 questions to ask yourself before investing" and the extensive information on how to use the internet to do research on this sector especially helpful. Understanding the difference in the three phases of clinical trials and how and where the results are reported is not only useful information for anyone evaluating investment opportunities, but for anyone wanting to keep abreast of promising new medical treatments. The first half of the book focuses on investment opportunites in this field of the future and the second half more on the science behind the headlines and the biotech companies. To my surprise, while I didn't fully understand everything about the science, I couldn't put the book down. I'm confident I now know more about this field than my financial advisor and look forward to applying what I've learned to diversify my stock portfolio.

Hardcore description of how and why molecules move and react

An ideal reference for those intimate with the field of reacting and non-reacting "fluids". This is not a text-book for those faint-of-heart when it comes to mathematics and "techno-babble", but rather a comprehensive treatment of physical properties and interactions that govern gaseous and liquid phase molecules.

"Molecular Theory of Gases and Liquids" is unique in its cross-disciplinary approach to each aspect of molecular phenomena. Chemists, Physicists, and Engineers alike will find its content, the corresponding discussions, and at least one of the various approaches to the derivation of each concept invaluable.

Most disciplines have a text that is casually refered to as its "bible". As a physical chemist studying the interactions of high- temperature reacting fluid flows, (a glorified way of saying combustion), I heartily recommend "Molecular Theory of Gases and Liquids" to that status.

Exactly what I needed.

This book was exactly what I needed. It contains all the information I needed. A great learning tool. The part of the book I am most impressed with is the section of infant nutrition. It explains month by month what you can feed your infant. An example is the 4th month of life, you can start your child on iron enriched cereals.

A great guide for nutrition.

Very knowledgable book on nutrition including information for children and older adults. As a culinary professional I wanted to read up on the latest nutrition especially on soy and to improve my diet. I am also considering taking some courses, one of them is Sanitation. The Study Guide for the National Servsafe Exam by Dr. Leonardi was a book I found also very knowledgable and I am certain that it will help me with my exam once I decide when to take it.

Great Text for Culinary Nutrition Class

I was assigned this text in my nutrition class in culinary school. The book was a joy to read because it was fun and easy to read. I really liked the section on vitamins and food sources of each vitamin. However, if you really want to know the type of questions asked in nutrition class in culinary school get the following. "Nutrtion Study Guide for Food Service and Culinary Professionals: Key Review Questions and Answers by Melissa Heilman. The isbn of this book is 1933023058. This book is right on with the type of questions that I accounted on my tests. With the help of these two books getting an "A" was quite easy.

good book in need of a good revision

A good book, with excellent didactic approach; but getting dated.
The book needs a good revision "asap". The kinetics revision (chap. 1 a 4) is somewhat poor.
The reactive chemical systems (chap. 5, 6) are well approached; the liquid phase reaction (chap. 7) is a little too long.
The chapters about reactor are very good (chap. 8 to 11).
Hill's treatment of heterogeneous reator (chapter 12) is superb. Best among all reactor analysis books that I know.
However, chapter 13 and the appendices are useless.
The book requires new examples and better figures and tables, as well as, much better list of exercises. In general, new computational calculations (example, data sheets) must be included in the book.

A fair mix of kinetics and reactor design. Dense.

This book does a thorough job of spanning topics from theoretical issues to more practical reactor design, but does neither one very well. In general, it is hard to read. Fogler does a better job with reactor design.

This book manages to present a powerful insight into chemical kinetics, giving the reader the knowledge necessary to fully understand chemical reactor design. However, it also presents tools useful to everyone who works with kinetics/reactor design I recommend it both to undegraduate and graduate students.
