His long and illustrious career in both academia and in the professional practice of engineering includes serving as a senior structural engineer with the noted firm of Ammann and Whitney, as well as authoring numerous scientific papers and eight books on structural mechanics. Dr. Szilard was the recipient of a "Senior Fellowship Award" by the A. von Humboldt Foundation, Germany.

Author has collected a significant array of various plate problems and presented them in one literature which is surely a very commnedable effort.

Engineers and Scientists working in the area of various plate problems would find this literature of immense help, wherein they will not have to rummage through various publications to find out typical solution to the problem he is looking for.

However it is felt that some of the basic derivations( specially the classical part) are a bit too brief and further elaboration could have benefitted specially those, who are new to the topic and not so comfortable with fourth order differential equations related to the plate.

An elaboration( even a brief one) on Dynamic response of plates on elastic foundations and some of the work carried out in this area by Thomson and Kobori, G.Warburton to name a few would have made the book more complete.

Over all a very good monograph as a quick reference to plate problems for both practicing engineers and researchers.

Excellent Text & Reference Book

A most comprehensive book (text and reference) dealing with all aspects of plate analysis that can be used to solve practical plate problems in civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, aerospace, marine and mining engineering. Easy to read with many easy to follow examples. Math knowledge is relatively modest, only a familiarity with algebra, calculus & matrix operations is required. Every solution and technique presented is critically evaluated for efficiency and accuracy and compared to other methods. The handy accompanying CD has 170 plate formulas and a finite element model for static and dynamic analysis of moderately large plate problems. This is a must for your reference library. Take advantage of Dr Szilard's vast knowledge and wonderful writing style. This book should be considered for using as a primary text for college engineering classes.

Great text book for the preservice teacher

During my formal education, I had to read a lot of books on methods and classroom management. This text praticals covers all important topics and sums up the really important aspects of many concepts. Topics are discipline, preparing for the school year, working with parents, lesson planning, community of learners, motivation and challenging students.

I am presently rereading this book in order to prepare for my job in the fall. It's a keeper!

GREG C. STONE, PhD, is a dielectrics engineer who is active in writing IEEE and IEC machine insulation standards, and who worked for the Research Division of Ontario Hydro testing its hundreds of motor and generator windings. He presently works for Iris Power Engineering.

EDWARD A. BOULTER, Lt. Commander (Ret.), USN Reserves, is now a consulting engineer. Previously he spent nearly 40 years working as project/senior engineer and technical team leader designing machine insulation systems at General Electric.

IAN CULBERT was a motor designer first for Parsons Peebles and then Reliance Electric. Prior to joining Iris Power Engineering, he worked for Ontario Power Generation as a motor specialist.

HUSSEIN DHIRANI is a senior generator design engineer at Ontario Power Generation.

This is an invaluable reference for instructors, test and reliability engineers, personnel engaged in rotating machine repair and teams engaged in root cause failure analysis. In particular the test methods used to evaluate insulation system materials for aging, and various types of stresses and the historical development of insulation materials is of value in gaining insight into and understanding of how some of the graphs found in IEEE, IEC, NEMA and other standards documents were developed and in particular what their limitations are. Descriptions of failure mechanisms strengthened my knowledge in this area. There are comprehensive summaries and brief descriptions of many on-line and off-line tests and inspections that are helpful in evaluating and monitoring conditions of rotating machines. However, these do not include the the most recent and increasingly popular motor circuit analysis methods nor make any mention of the correlation between on-line and off-line tests that have proven very useful to motor owners in gaining early warning of the onset of problems, which if not attended to, will lead to insulation system failures. Otherwise I believe this text should be in the library of every organization that has substantial numbers of rotating machines in their care.

This title fullfills a gap in the literature of generators insulation

It is pretty difficult to find good references and papers regarding the electrical insulation of generators and motors. This book is a "must have" for those who works with large electrical rotating machines, such as hydro power generators (in my case). Its fullfill a lack of literature information regarding the design, evaluation, tests and repair of electrical insulation (specially for stator bars and coils). Greg Stone is a well known expert of this matter, and he describes in his book almost everything about this complex subject. Before the release of this work, such kind of information could be find only in technical papers or even only in the standars from IEEE or IEC. Highly recommended for those who want to deeply understand the wonderfull world of the electrical insulation.

Essential companion to the EDFA bible.

Since its 1994 publication, Desurvire's "Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers: Principles and Applications" has been *the* standard reference book on the physics and system applications of optical amplifiers. As many scientists and engineers will attest, "Principles" is unchallenged in its authoritative coverage of key topics, including modeling and characteristics of EDFAs, and quantum and semiclassical treatments of noise in amplified systems. Although "Principles" remains a timeless classic, the intervening eight years have seen relentless progress in optical amplifiers and their applications, necessitating a companion volume.
The new volume, "Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers: Device and System Developments", is divided into two major parts, describing fundamentals and applications, respectively.
Chapters 1-4 deal with a number of important fundamental issues. The serious reader will appreciate the thoroughness and rigor with which all of these topics are treated. Space permits me to describe only a few highlights.
In Chapter 2, Desurvire provides a deep, fascinating treatment of noise in optical amplifiers, which should be read by anyone seeking an understanding beyond the semiclassical description. We learn that the dominant noise in amplified direct-detection systems arises from fluctuations in stimulated emission and not, as widely thought, from signal-spontaneous beat noise. Desurvire succeeds in making photon-number and coherent states understandable to engineers not trained in quantum field theory. This chapter ends with an in-depth discussion of amplifier noise figures, uniting the microwave and optical regimes along lines proposed recently by H. Haus.
Chapter 3 presents the first complete description of information capacity limits in optical transmission systems in both semiclassical and quantum regimes. Comprehending these fundamental limits requires one to combine an understanding of the physical characteristics of noise and nonlinearity with the tools of Shannon's information theory. Desurvire is one of very few individuals capable of synthesizing these disparate topics and presenting them in a coherent form. This chapter presents an original unified quantum model for noise and nonlinearity that is certain to inspire other research in this field.
In Chapters 5-8, we are given a comprehensive survey of recent progress in amplifier and system technologies for terrestrial and undersea applications. Here, Desurvire has teamed with three authoritative coauthors, who wrote three of the four chapters. Chapters 5-8 cover these topics in systematic, detailed fashion. We learn about the latest developments that open up new fiber amplification windows, including lumped and distributed Raman amplifiers and various doped-fiber alternatives to the erbium-doped silica workhorse. Since the 1994 publication of "Principles", extended system reach has made fiber nonlinearity and chromatic dispersion compensation into topics of enormous importance, and these are discussed amply here. In a very real sense, the story of fiber system research is the story of "hero" experiments, and here we are treated to a fastidious accounting of every summit that researchers have climbed.
If you are a serious scientist, engineer or student working on optical communications, you will find this book essential reading for years to come.

A most needed goldmine

Since the so-called EDFA " Bible " was released in 1994, most EDFA experts - or late converts, jumped in the cash-making bandwagon of lure and deceit. Ganged-up with scientifically illiterate marketers/analysts, some of them forgone their science upbringings and ethics to promise to gullible investors the moon of "infinite bandwidth" in $/s/GHz units. But in academia and industry, more serious people developed the true EDFA 'science'. Over the past ten years, their work overflowed the field with thousands of technical journal/conference papers. Given such a proliferation (also including a fair share of hype), those familiar with the surviving " Bible " have been craving all this time for an updated reference. This book release not only comes timely, but also overwhelms chicken-soup chapter books published years ago. As the authoritative foreword states, Desurvire wisely prevailed upon his world-class expert colleagues to put altogether such this incredible 'tour de force'(again). Their thorough review should save days and months of desperate search for answers and background materials. This includes many difficult calculations and system-optimization issues which all developers struggle with. Actually, some people may resent that their well-garded little secrets are now made available to all! This book is an information goldmine every page you may look at. Like the first one, it is the kind of scientific reference that will never be outdated nor proved wrong, no matter future developments. Five stars and A^+!..

Must for optical engineer

This book covers almost all the aspects in designing optical transmission system. Considering the fact that optical amplifiers are indispensable in modern optical transmission systems, it is with reason that the book covers not only EDFA but also FEC, Q factor measurement and even Raman. Compared to its predecessor, it is more engineering oriented. In addition to its very useful appendices, description on actual systems, terrestrial and submarine, are very informative and inclusive. In particular, chapter 2 gives a very good insight into the nature of optical noise. Therefore, I would like to recommend it to every engineer in optical communication field.

The InfoSec Bible... Simply put, a MUST have!

This book is the Bible of information security. I stumbled into the 3rd edition (published in 1995) years ago and found it quite helpful, but dated by the time I acquired it. I was simply stunned and enthralled when I discovered a 4th edition had been published. I ordered it immediately, and waited impatiently to arrive... (2 day air)... I received it today, and I can't put it down. It has completely exceeded my expectations, which were considerable given I was very much impressed with the 3rd. This book belongs in any security professionals library. If you haven't got it, you are missing the definitive compendium of security information. Once you have mastered this text, other books do an excellent job of drilling further into the details, but few can exceed the sheer scope and thoroughness of this tome. For those worried about acquiring obsolete texts, this edition is completely current and up to date! Very impressive. Highly recommmended.

Covers all IS Security Critical Success Factors

This book is an anthology of carefully selected papers by experts in their respective knowledge areas. The organization of the papers is consistent with the basic principle of security - layered security in depth, and covers management responsibility, basic safeguards, and physical and technical protection, and special issues.
What makes this book such a valuable reference is the care with which the editors chose topics. Each topic area is a critical success factor to implementing and managing an effective security posture, and I especially like the inclusion of papers on "Policies, Standards and Procedures" and "Legal Issues in Computer Security" in the section devoted to Management Responsibility. The paper on risk management in this section is also excellent.
The section on basic safeguards actually goes beyond the domain of IS security by addressing disaster recovery (this discipline is independent of IS security, but is closely related), and cross functional topics, such as auditing and application controls. These topics are the core of IS security and I was pleased to see them included in the form of exceptionally well written, in-depth papers.
Other highlights, in my opinion, are "Security of Computer Data, Records, and Forms" (an often overlooked, but critical element of IS security), and "Outside Services". Both of these papers show the width and depth of the topics covered in this excellent book. If you are an IS security manager this book is an essential desk reference, and it is also useful to anyone managing production support and service delivery functions, or tasked with vendor management. In my opinion this is one of the best IS security references available and I highly recommend it.

The Only Book that covers all aspects of Computer Security

I am offering an IT Security undergraduate course for the first time this Fall in a Business School environment. I reviewed many books on IT security before I selected this title for my course. The vast majority of Security books are nuts-and-bolts oriented, great for Engineers and Computer Scientists but lacking depth for the IT manager.
This book is a welcome relief since it contains such a wealth of information valuable to anyone working as an IT practitioner. It has several strenghts that other IS security books do not have: The current edition has been revised since the events of September 11th and thoughtfully reflects the change of the collective mindset of the IT world. Secondly, each Chapter is written by an expert in their respective fields. Thirdly, there is is a collection of references and links at the end of each Chapter which I found to be particularly valuable.
My course covers about half the topics in this book. The chapters on: Information Warfare, Denial of Service Attacks, Protecting Internet Visible Systems, Public Key Infrastructure and Computer Audit stand out in my mind as outstanding.
I intend to use this book again next Fall when this course is offered once more.

Used in MBA program

I did not think this book was that useful in that it does not reach any techniques but rather it allows you to glean ideas from mistakes that companies have made. It presents different cases from the real world but coming from a background of no marketing experience, I did not find this technique all that useful.

Great book with a difficult language

This is a great book, however, author's use of "difficult" language makes it a hard reading for students. The point of this book should entirely be to emphasize on facts, rather than to showcase author's verbal capabilities.

Great Book, and Much Cheaper Than The "College Version"

I am in culinary school and this is the required text for our classes. After hours of researching online, and even taking the time to call the publisher, I finally decided to take a risk by buying this "Trade" version rather than the "College Version," offered here on Amazon and in our school's bookstore. Rest assured! This book is EXACTLY the same as the "College Version," but it doesn't include the CulinarE Companion CD (which our school does not utilize anyway)! I even had the instructors at school ask the publisher about the differences, and they admitted that there are none! All of the recipes and page numbers match up identically. Save yourself the $36+ dollars and buy this version instead of getting ripped off by a marketing scam to get more money out of students by calling a book the "College Version" - I'm glad I did!

We are just getting into the book, so I can't offer too much of an opinion, but from what I've seen so far, I'm impressed! I just wanted to add my review so that hopefully another student like myself can save some money. I hope it helps!

a good bargain...saved money...highlights, expected that as was mentioned by the seller/no big deal...the book contains an incredible amount of recipes/I recommend buying used for anyone who is entering professional cooking or who does a lot of cooking at home...forget about those suzie home-maker books
