About the Author
William E. Boyce received his B.A. degree in Mathematics from Rhodes College, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics from Carnegie-Mellon University. He is a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He is currently the Edward P. Hamilton Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Science Education (Department of Mathematical Sciences) at Rensselaer. He is the author of numerous technical papers in boundary value problems and random differential equations and their applications. He is the author of several textbooks including two differential equations texts, and is the coauthor (with M.H. Holmes, J.G. Ecker, andW.L. Siegmann) of a text on using Maple to explore Calculus. He is also coauthor (with R.L. Borrelli and C.S. Coleman) of Differential Equations LaboratoryWorkbook (Wiley 1992), which received the EDUCOMBest Mathematics Curricular InnovationAward in 1993. Professor Boyce was a member of the NSF-sponsored CODEE (Consortium for Ordinary Differential Equations Experiments) that led to the widely-acclaimed ODE Architect. He has also been active in curriculum innovation and reform. Among other things, he was the initiator of the “Computers in Calculus” project at Rensselaer, partially supported by the NSF. In 1991 he received theWilliam H.Wiley Distinguished FacultyAward given by Rensselaer.

Richard C. DiPrima (deceased) received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics from Carnegie-Mellon University. He joined the faculty of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute after holding research positions at MIT, Harvard, and Hughes Aircraft. He held the Eliza Ricketts Foundation Professorship of Mathematics at Rensselaer, was a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Academy of Mechanics, and the American Physical Society. He was also a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He served as the Chairman of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Rensselaer, as President of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Applied Mechanics Division of ASME. In 1980, he was the recipient of theWilliam H.Wiley Distinguished Faculty Award given by Rensselaer. He received Fulbright fellowships in 1964–65 and 1983 and a Guggenheim fellowship in 1982–83. He was the author of numerous technical papers in hydrodynamic stability and lubrication theory and two texts on differential equations and boundary value problems. Professor DiPrima died on September 10, 1984.

Horrible Book

I had used this book for a Introductory Differential Equations class I took my Junior year and because of this book I had the worst time understanding the material in this class. The explanations are convoluted and lengthy, yet somehow manage to skip important steps, leaving it up to the student to have to decipher the logic behind the example problems and core theorems/methods. You know a textbook is bad when understanding the concepts and examples takes just as long as doing the homework. Professors, I beg you not to make your students have to purchase and use this book in your Diff. Eq's classes. I guarantee you'll have a more motivated and successful class if you choose a more interesting, less lifeless book than this.

Differential Equations is never exactly an easy class

I bought the book new on here simply because no used ones were available. This book didn't get a lot of use by me because my diff-eq teacher didn't completely follow the book. However there were some very good examples in the book that definitely helped me out in understanding what was going on in the course. As I said in the title, differential equations is not an easy class, so you can't expect this book to make it cake, but it'll get you farther than just searching the internet IMO.

I do not see what all the negative reviews are about. Everything is very clearly explained, the examples are good and simple, and there is an answer to almost every problem in the back of the book. I am not quite sure what more you could ask for in a book about ODE's

Bad for Illustrators looking for reference!!

This book like It's title clearly indicates is not an illustration reference book.It's extremely useful to students and practitioners of the fine art of figure drawing ,it provides poses which are very diffrent from what we are used to seeing in normal life thus forcing us to see how many familiar shapes change when viewed at an unfamiliar angle,for a figure artist struggling with foreshortening a book like this one and Burne Hogarths Dynamic Figure Drawing used in tandem could work wonders.This is the only book of its kind and is in one word "BRILLIANT" .

Very useful

There are lots of visual reference books out there. It would be easy to populate a bookshelf with them. After a while, though, they start to look the same.

Not this one. Heavily foreshortened poses are the hardest (for me at least), so this book devotes itself to genuinely distinctive views. It may sound like distortion to describe an arm or leg as being a third length of the other. In fact, it is distortion if they are the same length, when viewed from some angles.

This book gives an uncommon perspective - it has earned its place on my shelves.

interesting poses, bad position and poor quality photographs

The poses in this book are indeed very dynamic and interesting but the one MAJOR draw-back is that they are all with the models laying down on the ground. Definitely not a very practical figure reference book for an illustrator like myself. I mean lets be honest, how many times are you going to be drawing a figure contorted on the ground verses standing and engaged in some sort of action. It may, however, be possible too adapt some of the poses for a standing position and yet gravity affects the body completely differently when it is horizontal instead of vertical. The photographs themselves are very poor in terms of quality in that they are: muddy, bad resolution, slighty out of focus, badly lit etc. etc. etc. Basically this was a very disappointing purchase. The "Fairburn System" series is far better than this book for photographic figure reference material; however, very hard to find.

Churchill biographer Gilbert was knighted in 1995 for his service to Britain as a historian and the author or editor of over 70 books, including his six-volume Churchill biography and 11 volumes of Churchill documents. While Gilbert's perspective doesn't feel quite personal, it is suitably accessible and digests a great deal of information sensibly. 28 maps.

D-Day was so immense an event that an introduction to it has to embody subject-limiting choices. Historian Dan van der Vat in D-Day [BKL O 1 03] decided to emphasize the postinvasion combat in Normandy, particularly the Canadian role in it. Gilbert structures his short survey around this concept: the Allies' fear of failure and what they did to ensure success of the initial landings. The actual fighting, then, treated in a vast specialty and popular literature, assumes a secondary place. Gilbert dispenses first with the first strategy the British considered, which was to avoid invading France altogether and to attack the Nazi empire instead through Norway and/or the Balkans. Pressed by Roosevelt and Stalin to give up this peripheral strategy, Churchill sanctioned the cross-Channel attack, and Gilbert describes the two years of preparation in its two most crucial respects: the build-up of men and material, and the stratagems to deceive the Germans about the location of the landings. There are no photographs in Gilbert's book, but there are 27 superb maps. They give a complete picture of the invasion preparation and execution.

Churchill biographer Gilbert was knighted in 1995 for his service to Britain as a historian and the author or editor of over 70 books, including his six-volume Churchill biography and 11 volumes of Churchill documents. DDay from the British Perspective

I found this book to be a fast and excellent read. Where Ambrose's DDAY is a minute by minute tactical read of this moment in history, Gilbert focuses on the overall strategy and illuminates key points during the invasion. Gilbert also introduces a novel concept to American readers, Montgomery as an outstanding leader, loved by his men, and not just the prima donna other books and movies have made him out to be. Gilbert also makes a solid effort to accurately account not just for the lives lost by the Allied troops but also by French civilians prior to, during, and after the invasion. This is a well written account of DDay and worth the time to read.

A good overview of the Normandy Invasion.

This is a good overview from the British perspective of the Normandy Invasion. Gilbert points out that Churchill prepared the way for a return to France after the defeat in France. He did this by fostering the French Resistance, making guerrilla raids on the coast, and letting the captive population know the real news. When the Americans did enter the war, the British led the way in leadership on the invasion. Gilbert insists that it was not Churchill who was a critic of the French option rather than the soft under belly of Europe.

Gilbert does a good job of portraying the strategy of the invasion, rather than of the actual fighting. The actual invasion is covered in only three of the ten chapters. The rest details the preparation and the end result. As Gilbert reminds us, if the invasion had failed, the population of Europe might have led very different lives. A good read.

A great look at D-Day...

I loved this intriguing book about D-Day by Sir Martin Gilbert. My father was an American GI who landed at Utah Beach in Normandy. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in World War II. The maps are terrific! I was able to get permission to use one of Sir Martin Gilbert's maps from this book in my book, We Never Lost Hope, A Holocaust Memoir and Love Story, which helped support the authenticity of my family's story.

Sparse Index

This is a 309-page book with a one and a half page index! I can't count how many times I have pulled out this book, looked for a particular topic in its index, and put the book back on the shelf.

Not obvious from the title, although Lee says so on the back cover, this book describes a design flow for ASIC design. That makes me wonder if there exists a Verilog book that describes a design flow for microprocessor design.

A reasonable introduction to Verilog is provided on the CD accompanying "Computer Organization and Design: The Hardware/Software Interface", Third Edition. [...]

For an HDL-independent explanation of register-transfer-level (RTL) and behavioral modeling, I really like Figure 1-1 in "The Designer's Guide to VHDL" and its accompanying text, although Peter Ashendon gives credit to Gajski and Kuhn ("New VLSI Tools", IEEE Computer, Vol. 16, No. 12, December 1983, pp. 11-14) for devising the figure. Lee's book, like so many others, doesn't do a good job on these concepts.

Of course, there is no substitute for IEEE Std 1364-2001 (and IEEE Std 1364.1-2002 defining the RTL subset).

Great reference for synthesizable verilog

This book is an excellent reference for writing synthesizable verilog. Chapter 4 (Best Known Methods for Synthesis) gives useful example and explaination on this matter. Such knowledge is usually only attainable through experience.

I find this book very useful, and would highly recommend it to students and new designers (even experienced designers too!). It will definitely help them in coding synthesizable verilog for tape-out!

No use !

Don't buy this book! Its useless, neither for beginners nor for advanced people(anyway). I went thru this book in couple of hours, found ridiciolous simple mistakes in it, Book has "for Syntheis" in its name but found so many rubbish pages full with some stupid simulation results. Well, one can find better docs on the Net just for free, instead of buying this book.

The subject of energy is never far from most people's minds. We wish we had more, we wonder where what we used to have went, and we worry that our future energy is overcommitted to work and other obligations from which we derive no pleasure.

Vital Energy seems the perfect book for solving this increasingly widespread dilemma. Based on the ancient healing system of Ayurveda, which originated in India, it will help you identify yourself as an earth-, fire-, or wind-based personality. (Earth people tend to be more nurturing, fire people more competitive and driven, wind people more flighty and creative.) And then it presents seven key ways in which each of those types can improve their lives: finding yourself, eliminating toxins, feeding yourself better, building loving relationships, exercising, finding meaning in your work, playing passionately, and finding happiness and contentment by simply being alive.

While that may sound like an ethereal set of goals and standards, Dr. David Simon's advice is really focused and easy to apply. For example, in the chapter on exercise, a fire person is told to choose outdoor or water-based fitness activities and to not make exercise another way in which he asserts his competitive drive. In the chapter on building loving relationships, Dr. Simon offers a way to "metabolize" feelings so that you can digest them, absorb what you need, and eliminate the rest, as you would with food. There's even advice on how to have better bowel movements in the morning.

Dr. Simon is medical director of Deepak Chopra's Center for Well Being, so the readers most interested in Dr. Chopra's work will probably be drawn to Vital Energy. But it would be a shame if this book only ended up in the hands of those already familiar with Ayurvedic medicine and philosophy. Vital Energy is a completely engaging, easy-to-follow introduction to Ayurveda, and anyone searching for better health, vitality, and well-being should give it a read. --Lou Schuler

Vital Energy - a must read for feeling great!

This book was inspiring because it reminded me to do the things I inherently knew inside to help myself feel balanced and vital. Ever since I turned 35 years old, all I have wanted was to feel good inside and out and I could not figure out why this was so difficult to attain (and my tiredness seemed to come on so suddenly)...I was exhausted. Getting in touch with my true nature through the simple steps (life concepts) that Dr. Simon illustrates enables me to feel truly alive again. I am elated to know that such physicians exist out there that are truly interested in a persons well being and can treat the whole being! I look forward to going to the Chopra Center one day and experiencing the programs he developed in person.

Vital Energy is of Vital Importance

Vital Energy: The Seven Keys to Invigorate Body, Mind and Soul is a landmark contribution to health and wellness. The author poses two important questions:
1) Why are so many people overwhelmed by fatigue, lack of enthusiasm, and depression?
2) Why are so many people haunted by the sense that something vitally important is missing from their lives?
In pursing answers to these questions, Simon focuses on the idea that "we have learned a lot about how to treat illness but not much about how to create health." In medical school he learned that modern medicine can effectively deal with the symptoms of disease without necessarily helping them to heal.
Simon states, "I learned that health and illness were the consequence of the thoughts and choices people made." This personal discovery came to him through the tension that existed between his medical studies and his cross-cultural explorations of health and wellness in various parts of the world.
Healing is a holistic concept that has global reach. The idea of healing in many cultures is focused on creating a greater sense of unity across mind, body and spirit. Simon promotes the belief that the experience of happiness and health represents an essential unity across mind, body and spirit while unhappiness and disease represents some degree of disintegration. A broad view of healing is critical for reintegrating these essential connections and David SimonÕs ÒVital EnergyÓ is an essential contribution to everyoneÕs health and well being.

Very Practical.

Dr. David Simon has done an excellent job in describing ancient Ayurvedic wisdom for well being of body, mind and soul. Dr. Simon has explained in simple modern language the Ayurvedic principles for invigorating body, mind and soul. Although, being an Indian, I was familiar with many of the things stated by the author, the simplicity and clarity of the whole book has value- added to my own understanding of the ancient vedic science. Author has dealt with almost all the methods of reaching the source of vital energy which is available within all of us. Author's suggestions are not only very useful but so pratical that one can use them for one's own benifit without much of complex efforts.
I emphatically suggest everyone read this book, practice the principles told methodically and ENJOY invigorating VITAL ENERGY for body, mind and soul.
Lastly, but not in the least, this book must be kept on the book shelf for day to day reference till the time the principles get thoroughly ingrained in one's own Mind-Body system.

Interviewing textbooks are notoriously dry and mechanical. I can count using the fingers of one hand the number of books I have read on the subject that are worth their weight in cotton candy.
This work by the Sommers-Flanagan duo represents an excellent addition to the instructional literature on the fine art of interviewing. They use an wonderful blend of humor, humanity, sound advice and counsel, and theory.
Highly recommended.
