Before you read the first chapter of Smart Money Decisions, kick yourself. Hard. Then do it again, just for good measure. Because no matter how hard you're able to pummel yourself, it won't match the impact you'll feel when you realize how much you overpaid for your house and your car, how badly you bungled your last job change, how you were suckered into buying an extended warranty because of a fearful scenario that a veteran salesperson planted in your head.

Max H. Bazerman is a professor of negotiation at Northwestern University. Unlike many of today's investment gurus, he's applied statistical models to numerous situations in which the price of a purchase was in flux. And he has concluded, beyond any doubt, that certain tactics will almost certainly save you money, while others put the power in someone else's corner, dooming you to pay a higher price than you might have otherwise. Now, you may already know that there's a mere 10 percent chance you'll use an extended warranty, and thus pass it up; about 60 percent of purchasers are able to resist. But you may not know that you should never let a real estate agent know the highest price you are willing to pay for a property. In fact, you're best off if the agent knows only how low the seller is willing to go. With a knowledge only of the floor and no idea what the ceiling is, guess where the price winds up? Right: hovering just over the carpet. There's more to this book than negotiation, though. One chapter persuades you to keep the value of your time in mind when making a purchase. For example, if you research and shop for 20 hours in order to save $120 on a purchase, you've set the value of your time at $6 an hour. (Would you like fries with that big-screen TV?)

The frequent result, however, often consists of New Age mantras or confusing psychobabble. Bazerman, on the other hand, grounds his guide in the behavioral aspects of decision making. He is a professor at Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management and author of Judgment in Managerial Decision-Making (1998) and Negotiating Rationally (1992). He begins here with a fascinating illustration of how otherwise sensible individuals can make foolish decisions. A must - even for experts

I have read lots of books about behavioral decision-making and behavioral finance. When I bought the book I initally expected it being similar like many other books covering this subject. But while I was reading I just could not stop, though I found many examples I knew already. But the style of Bazerman's writing attracted me (though English is not my mother language) so much, that I studied the book from the first to the last page. The examples of bounded rationality of many human decisions and its 'sub-optimal' if not sometimes costly results are very well explained. The solutions to improve the decision-making processes are presented very clearly at the end of each chapter.
For those who work in the area of behavioral decsion-making or behavioral finance the book is an excellent comprehension and an 'add-on' to the basics that are partially covered in other publications. For beginners the contents is easy to understand: The examples deal with important decision problems everyone of us is confronted with at least once in her/his lifetime. If people try to follow Bazerman's advices, they probably will not only imrpove reasoning, but might save some money at the next purchase of a new car or at other occasions. Most important for me was the description about the value of time.

What's stopping you? Use your money to your best interests

This book has the effect of sitting down to a heart to heart talk with an admired family friend who knows you well enough to appreciate your strengths, forgive your shortcomings and believe in your capacity to change.
After the first chapter, even an unregenerate spendthrift like me will be thinking about patterns we didn't recognize as obstacles, especially in the realm of money management. And that is the key, says Prof. Bazerman. The very idea of money mistakes may be daunting, but what this book does very clearly -- painlessly and with good humor -- is prescribe ways to prepare for, circumvent and correct them.
Every chapter takes examples with which it is easy to identify, from buying a car or a house to negotiating a new job, and explores alternative strategies to show how they actually do affect the outcome. And recapping key pointers at the end of each chapter reminds us (for instance) that not just cold cash but time is money, and a critical element we might not recognize in many of our decisions.
What I like best about Smart Money Decisions is it gets right down to business without condescending or pandering to late-blooming readers like me, who will really benefit by being honest with ourselves about what we need to do to change our fiscal ways. Read it and reap!

Disappointed with focus

It starts with interesting but simplistic common sense advice about buying houses and cars, then falls flat. The author never seems to be settled on whether he wants to help consumers or large companies. And much of the advice is weak.
In the fourth chapter, for instance, after making a hopelessly simplistic but somewhat credible case against buying title insurance when buying a house, he forgets to include the vital fact that the seller pays for title insurance in almost all cases. Later in the book he gets lost in his own story about budweiser without making any point at all.
Like so many books about finance, this book has two flaws. It does not have enough content to warrant a full book, even a skinny one like this. When it does start to wade into deeper water, one senses the heavy hand of an editorial assistant, too weak in the comprehension of numbers, trimming and constricting the story to the point that the reader can't find the significance of its message.

Following up on the 1994 book Pulsed Laser Deposition of Thin Films, this current version summarizes the state of the technology in pulsed laser deposition (PLD) techniques, new materials that have been grown, and their applications. Unlike the 1994 book, which focused on technique, the primary focus here is on the recent explosive growth of applications, including optical devices, electronic materials, sensors and actuators, and biomaterials.

Each one of the chapters has been written by one or more leading experts. Collectively, the editor and authors represent some of the most important innovators in the field.

The book is divided into five logical sections:

• Section 1 introduces the technique of PLD of complex materials, focusing on the latest advances that are helping this technology make the bridge from R&D to commercial applications.
• Section 2 discusses the use of PLD in non-standard or unconventional formats, including resonant infrared laser-induced PLD and matrix-assisted growth techniques for deposition of polymers or other fragile species. The final chapter in this section addresses industrial scale-up, a critical issue in making PLD technology fully commercial.
• Section 3 demonstrates the unique capability of PLD for a diverse range of materials and discipline-specific applications, including coating powders for drug delivery systems.
• Section 4 examines a range of application areas, focusing on broad classes of materials and devices, including waveguide materials and biomaterials.
• Section 5 presents two of the most recent and promising areas of exploration: laser ablative synthesis of single-wall carbon nanotubes and thin film growth of quasicrystals.

About the Author
ROBERT EASON, PhD, is Professor of Optoelectronics at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton, UK, and a member of the ORC Management Board. Professor Eason has more than 140 journal and 160 conference publications to his credit. His achievements in PLD include the world's first lasing PLD waveguide (Nd:GGG on YAG), quasi-three level c.w. operation of Nd:GGG, the growth of single crystal thin-film sapphire that matches the best bulk sapphire grown to date, and the first successful growth and laser operation of Ti:sapphire on sapphire waveguides.

On second thought

I wrote a first review, and the author hunted down my email address and emailed my differential equations teacher. In the email, he said, I should wait until I finished the course until I reviewed his book. I realized how wrong I was to shoot my mouth off. I should have been more sagacious and patient in order to tell the truth.

First the good: I only spent 40 bucks on this book and should be able to get my money back. And the author spent tons of time designing little computer cartoons because there's nothing I like better than being distracted by a funny cartoon.

The bad: If you don't have ADD before you pick up this book, you will after. Printed on wonderfully shiny paper, with multicolored graphs, headers, footers, pictures, and once in awhile even something haveing to do with differential equations, this book is next to impossible focus on. That's part of the reason some students like this book. They don't have to read. They can just look at the pictures then ask someone else for help.

Do you want to learn about differential equations? Well, if you buy this book, you might. If you pair this book up with another book that explains why this stuff makes sense. And then read only that book. Good understanding of the more difficult problems come from a good foundation. This book spends 2 chapters on the basics. But boy, you want to graph stuff, here's your chance. (You can even have an assignment to graph a kitten out of differential equations, i mean man, that's worth a star right there.) The author succumbs to greedius maximus, wherein he crams as much crap into a book to sell as many copies as possible, instead of focusing on one thing and doing it well. Because no one really needs more than 20 pages to describe all of second order differential equations. The computer can do all that for you.

Oh, and if you want to learn how to solve differential equations for something like physics class, good luck. You have two choices in this book, you can either guess and make up your own way of doing things, or you can use the cookbook approach. You won't really know why you want to take the exponential, but that doesn't matter because you just need a grade. So you follow the clever boxed text that says do this, this, than this. And voila, you have an answer. And to anyone who says, well, we have to graph most differential equations because we can't solve them, i say, wonderful? So, I can just move onto stuff no one understands and expect to make sense of it by not understanding the equations we do know how to solve.

And since I need to plug Dover to make my 20 dollar commission, buy Morris Tenenbaum's Ordinary Differential Equations book. It's not fancy, but it's well written and 800 pages long. Which is funny, because Borrelli's book is 790 pages long and tries to cover ODE's, PDE's and Linear Algebra. Telling detail? I think so. ( I bet you could even buy a couple of awesome Dover books on PDE's and Linear Algebra and still undercut the 115 dollar selling price by about 3/4. )

Confusing, Disorganized, Too Little Examples

A terrible book to learn DEs from. Just finished a course using it, they expect you to know how to solve problems with poor examples or any examples at all. This book expects you to figure everything out on your own. Also, it is useless to study from, as there are only 1 or 2 questions that actually have answers in the back of the book. It is simply cryptic, and one has to waste more time than is really neccesary to be able to figure it out. Buy another book.

A good up-to-date introduction to Differential Equations

This text teaches Differential Equations using the models and tools that both mathematicians and engineers use. It uses the modeling process to show how the DEs are developed. It uses numerous examples showing how to understand a DEs behavior using numerical solvers as well as standard analytical techniques and (when they exist) solution formulas.
Because it doesn't use a cookbook approach to solving DEs, it isn't restricted to just those DEs for which there is a standard solution method. Since it can deal with this wider variety of DEs, it can introduce more interesting models (e.g., the autocatylator) which it would otherwise ignore. The graphs used to illustrate these models are easy to understand, incredibly detailed, and very pretty.
This book gives a very complete introduction to Differential Equations and to the models that they describe.

Confusing

I guess the content is still good considering that it is Clausewitz. I thought that it was confusing to figure out whether the content was Clausewitz' words or the author. I guess I was also looking for more explicit applications of Clausewitz theory. To be honest, I learned more about Clausewitz reading Colin Powell's biography than reading this book. There is still lots of good stuff in this book though if you can buy it for cheap.

A Superb Leadership Resource

It probably requires having some experience with business strategy before any of Clausewitz's advice can resonant with you. However, for those who have been involved in executive decision processes, Clausewitz's messages are remarkably fresh and insightful (almost two hundred years later). His advice is particularly fascinating in context with the current "Information Age."

Clausewitz's message is simple, but you have to be ready for it to appreciate it. Information will never be complete. Some information will be totally wrong. If you wait for perfect information/intelligence, you will lose (and your competitor will win). In the fog of war, you must find that "faint light" and have the courage to go toward it. Don't wait for the fog to clear, and don't wait for the light to get brighter. It will be too late if you do.

Too often in the Information Age, companies and their executives mistakenly believe that it is possible to get complete and accurate information before making a decision. However, despite vaste improvements in technology, information will never be complete, perfect, or even 100% accurate. Clausewitz understood this almost two centuries ago. He points to what true leaders must have. They must have the ability to detect the most relevant patterns among incomplete and sometimes erroneous information. They must be able to identify the goal (the faint beacon of light). Finally, they must have the courage to focus and align an organization's limited resources to accomplishing this goal. In business speak, business leaders must have a vision and must be willing to take risks to achieve that vision.

This message is hard for some people to take. I guess many are looking for a "how to" book that anyone can use. Clausewitz talks about "genius," and his concept of genius implies that not everyone is up to the challenges of leadship. It's a tough pill to swallow, but it is true. More than anything, this book affirmed beliefs I formed after years of observation, trial, and error.

Some may mistakenly believe that perfect information may not have been possible in Clausewitz's time, but it certainly is today. As a business analysis professional, I can attest that "complete" information is still not a reality. No amount of data mining, neural networks, or statistics can replace the qualities of leadership Clausewitz so clearly and eloquently expresses.

Information certainly has the potential to help make better business decisions, but faith is still required to act. Many of the information tools available today are not used, because our business leaders lack the faith to implement them (they're still waiting for complete information). A great companion to this book (in relation to information and decision making) is Against the Gods by Peter Bernstein.

Highly Recommended!

Though the editors freely admit that business and war are different, and that mapping one to the other is a mistake, this book seems to be based on exactly that idea. After September 11, 2001, business-as-war metaphors seem overblown. Many in business have stopped looking at competition as a death struggle. Instead, they treat it as a mutual effort to foster growth in their sectors so everyone then benefits from the resulting synergies. That said, this compilation, which condenses sections of Prussian General Carl von Clausewitz's major work, On War, is well worth reading, though dense and sometimes difficult to follow. Clausewitz, a fascinating thinker, approaches his subject with wit and clarity. By his own description, his real contribution isn't his analysis, but the analytical method he applies to problems. We from getAbstract find his approach clearly relevant to anyone struggling against an intelligent and resourceful opponent, in business, politics or government, as well as to those pondering ways to go to war.

Forget the path

The book suggests that it will provide 16 paths to bulding wealth, one for each Myers-Briggs type. Unfortunately it does not do so. For mine, what the book refers to as a visionary or INTP, it says instead, to forget building weath because "money is not why Visionaries are here in this lifetime". "Use your talents" is the only suggestion. Maybe others are better, but it appears to use most of its pages to discuss psychology and spends little time prescribing financial strategies.

This is New-Age, Feel Good Investing, People

You gotta wonder about the kind of person who would write a book with 'Millionaire' in the title, especially a book written written on the subject by someone claiming to have a PhD. Then again, you gotta wonder about the kind of person who would read a book with the word 'Millionaire' in the title, but enough self-incrimination.
The Millionaire Code starts off with the right idea in mind. The author posits that the key to wealth-building begins with understanding one's unique personality, and he uses the (in)famous Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator test as a basis for pinpointing some general aspects of one's personality. Mr. Farrell then uses a variation of the Myers-Briggs test to identify 16 different personality types, analyze some general characteristics of each, and then recommend financial courses of action for each.
The book is liberally sprinkled with lots of Jungian-influenced pop-psychology, notable business quotes by the likes of none other than Warren Buffett and Donald Trump, among others, and is filled to the brim with excerpts from some of the more popular (and more obscure) self-help books. Because of this, I am not really sure how much of the book is the author's own original contribution, and at times I had to wonder about the integrity of the mix.
The book itself is structured in four parts. The first two parts lay out the foundation for the author's assertion that personality is the key to investing, and calls upon the works of Carl Jung, Isabel Myers-Briggs, and David Keirsey for support. It is here that the author boldly states that one's DNA determines one's financial destiny, and this is one claim that I find to be specious (and also unprovable) and which also shows the New Age, pop-LA cultural influence that is also liberally distributed throughout the text. In Part Two he provides a test for the reader to determine his or her personality type.
From there, the book becomes less insightful and original, and more repetitive shaky. Part Three consists of many generalizations about four temperaments to which supposedly every person can be categorized. Part Four presents the sixteen personality types based on these temperaments, and does even more generalizing about the characteristics common to each personality. For each personality, he offers some general comments on the types of profession people having this personality would gravitate to (and apparently most personalities gravitate toward the same professions), and offers some basic advice on personal financial planning for each. It is in this aspect that the book is weakest, as the advice on personal financial planning boils down to either: let a professional financial planner handle your financial affairs (for those whose personalities label them as performers, teacher-healers or artisans), go it alone (for those whose personalities label them as managers, administrators or leaders), or simply to not worry about it, forget about it and focus on other things (for those whose personalities label them as thinkers).
I highly doubt that one would meet with much financial success if one were to follow Mr. Farrell's dubious courses of action. Still, the book is useful, especially for those of us looking to feel better about ourselves and our stance towards personal finance. Each chapter begins and ends with a notable quote, and the author does provide a detailed list for further reading (which Farrell calls the Millionaire's Basic Training Library). Probably the most important chapters in the book are the first, second and epilogue.
The book as a whole is partly anecdotal, with some biographical tidbits about the author placed here and there, and is partly spiritual. This latter part probably reflects the impact that Marsha Sinetar's excellent book, Do What You Love, The Money Will Follow, had on the author. As such, I believe the book deserves to be read, partly for the great quotes from the diverse likes of Joseph Campbell, Carl Jung, Gary Zukav, and Buckminster Fuller, and mostly for entertainment.
That said, I impress upon all readers to enjoy the book, and not take it too seriously, as more than a few of its assertions are rather tenuous. Still, being a fan of Mr. Farrell's frank commentary in his articles for CBS Marketwatch, I must commend him for having the courage to share a part of himself with us and for putting the interesting subject of personality and investing on the spotlight. In passing, much of the book could be used as a source of great fodder for some outstanding fiction.
Finally, this book does not take the reader off the hook for his or her financial decisions. Though it may offer some insight into how we approach (or should approach) our finances, it provides no excuse for not thinking and reasoning about what we are doing when we say that we are 'investing'.

Where's the Beef?

Over the years I have really enjoyed Paul Farrell's comments on investing, particularly when he recommends passive index fund strategies.

Farrell's theory for this book revolves around the fact that 96% of Americans are not millionaires....and the reason more people are not millionaires is that their savings and investment strategy is not matched to their personality type (as measured by the Myers-Briggs 16 personality types).

An interesting theory, but unfortunately Farrell provides no research to back up his theory. It would be interesting to random sample the 4% of Americans who are millionaires and determine if their success was determined by matching their savings, investment, and asset allocation strategy to their personality type.

Farrell spends a lot of the book on reviewing and explaining the history and practice of the Myers-Briggs personality tests.

I was expecting that Farrell would next review each of the 16 personality types and then explain how each specific type could achieve a relatively high net worth. He does spend time explaining each of the 16 personality types, but offers almost no explanations and recommendations for increasing net worth.

All in all, I was disappointed in Farrell's book. His theory would have much more validity if he had done the research which linked personality type to the proper savings, investment, and asset allocation strategies. He also should have spent time explaining how each of the 16 personality types could increase their net worth.

A more interesting book linking Myers-Briggs personality types to investment strategies is The Psychology of Money by Jim Ware. It offers more specific recommendations for improving your investment skills based upon your personality type.

I would suggest companion books to supplement this book including The Richest Man in Babylon, Bogle on Mutual Funds, The Millionaire Next Door, The 4 Pillars of Investing, A Random Walk Down Wall Street, Wealth of Experience: Real Investors on what Works and What Doesn't, The Coffeehouse Investor, and the Armchair Millionaire.

Elemental phosphorus...

This book was so interesting that I rammed right through it, in spite of being in the midst of moving! I've been on a kick of reading books about elements lately...which is probably good because I can always use this information in the classes I teach. Part of it is wanting to understand how these elements were discovered, and their uses and misuses over the years. Part of it is I've been reading about the Victorian Age and wanted to know more about the problems that they obviously had with chemicals in their environment and in the foods and medications. Apparently phosphorus was a huge part of the problem. If you've read Dickens or some of the other writers from that period, you know a little bit about children working in bad situations. Apparently, the matchmaking industry which was big at this point made a point of using children and teens and young women, who of course, suffered the dire consequences of working with phosphorus (fossy or phossy jaw).

This book was chock full of research. The book talks about how phosphorus was originally obtained through use of urine. It wasn't until the late 1800's that a process was found to abstract phosphorus from minerals. Phosphorus is a very important mineral for human beings. We need it for our bones, but as with most things in the body...it's moderation in all things. Too much of even a good thing is going to end up badly. This book covers all of the dangers of phosphorus, almost too much so. The research is phenomenal, as is the story...but there are some parts that were repetitive. I noticed several places where the author was repeating himself, maybe to draw attention to the facts...but it was too much. The book is quite long anyway, so there was no need to make it longer.

Of course, knowing man's propensity to use anything new they find for weapons, someone got the smart idea of using phosphorus in weapons. This is covered well in the book. The firebombing of Germany was enough to make me cringe. I hope people remember there were atrocities on both sides. I've read plenty on the wrongs of Germany during WWII but that particular chapter of war history on our part is horrendous.

Terrific book, very worth reading.

If you teach chemistry, you must read this book!

Fascinating reading about the mysteries of phosphorus. This covers everthing you wanted to know about phosphorus and more! By the time you finish this book you'll know how phosphorus was discovered, how it contributes to eutrophication (and what exactly eutrophication is, anyway), the symptoms of "phossy jaw", how a match is made, and many other fascinating facts about phosphorus. The author has resisted making this a "fact a page" list, and has put together the history of phosphorus in an ejoyable, coherent fashion. If you love books about chemistry, you'll have trouble putting this one down.

Elementally Fascinating

There are countless processes and materials that cycle through to keep life cycles on Earth going. Is there one material that is the bottleneck, the thing that limits populations and growth? Surprisingly, there is a "supreme ruler" that if diminished slows all life down, no matter what the availability of other chemicals is. That bottleneck chemical is phosphorus. According to _The Thirteenth Element: The Sordid Tale of Murder, Fire, and Phosphorus_ (John Wiley & Sons) by John Emsley, phosphorus is essential for, among other things, being the backbone of DNA and forming the basic chemistry for biological storage and use of energy. It does not get replenished by circulation as the other big four do; carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen all can circulate in the atmosphere or by water. It cannot be "fixed" from the atmosphere into the soil by microbes, as nitrogen can. Phosphorus does have its cycles, but they are slow, like the one that includes it being washed from the soil into the sea, forming part of the sea bed, and then in millions of years being lifted up as rock to form new land. The main land-based cycle is simply from soil to plants to animals and via urine, feces, or decomposition, back to soil again. Cultivation of land means that phosphorus in plants is exported away, and does not get re-deposited into the soil. Crops grown on the same land deplete it of other vital chemicals, but the one that is lost forever without deliberate replacement is phosphorus; this was not known until the nineteenth century. It was found that using bone meal as a fertilizer was effective, but it was originally assumed that the calcium in its calcium phosphate was the cause.
Emsley has good fun describing the ins and outs of phosphorus, but his book is particularly wide-ranging. He explains why the phosphorus in detergents is not really as bad as we once thought. He explains that it has been used as a medicine for centuries, even though it never cured anyone of anything. He tells stories of phosphorus as a poison, used as such successfully by many dissatisfied husbands and wives, some of whom were particularly skillful at the use of the element in this way, having practiced on a succession of spouses. Much of the book is devoted to the nasty properties of phosphorus, such as the horrid disease of "phossy jaw" which afflicted those in the matchmaking trade, or the distressing effects of nerve gas or phosphorous bombs.
So, like so many things, phosphorus is neither good nor bad, but is essential and can be used in many admirable or detestable ways. Emsley takes us through many of them in a wide-ranging book that not only covers the science of his element, but also the social forces in such activities as the advertising of matches and the social reforms which improved the safety of the matchmakers. He has many previous credits as a science writer, and clearly and vividly describes the history and both the dramatic and quotidian effects of an essential, ubiquitous, and dangerous element.
