A zoology of Patch Antennas

Not bad if you are just looking for a large collection of different types of patch antennas at a set frequency. This is a book for someone wanting to see what exists with references. It is not a book for those that want equations for the design of these antennas. You will need to find the reference and go find the design equations. The antennas size and performance info is realized for a set frequency.

Valuable collection of patch antennas

This book is a collection of patch antennas for different kinds of applications. It is mainly based on the research of the author's research group. In my opinion it is a very valuable first source for antenna designers looking for a patch antenna toplogy to start their design. I have used some of these designs as a starting point for my own designs. It is too bad these 'collection books' aren't frequently published.

Another useless investment teaser book!

I'm tempted to start writing what I call 'investment teaser books' - investment books that claim to introduce new concepts, set the scene, don't deliver anything and are essentially just adverts for the author's website. These books are almost invariably useless, although I occasionally buy them by mistake because I order them over the Web without looking at a copy before hand.
Anyway, this is an EW-inspired 'teaser book', that basically offers new ways of torturing raw data so that it fits spirals/channels/ellipses.
For example, the author tells us that you can always draw an elliptical envelope around short term trends. You never quite know how long the price is going to stay in that ellipse, but if it breaks through the ellíptical wall, then, have you guessed? That's right, time to start carefully drawing the next ellipse. Sometimes, prices are in two ellipses at once. The problem is that you never quite know whether you've got the right ellipse, because the authors couldn't possibly give away their proprietary calculation method for only the cover price of the book.
The section on spirals suffers from the classic vice of 'advanced' technical analysis that draws so many lines on a chart that the price will eventually hit one of them.
You can also put their amazing new tools together and get something really psychedelic.
This is by no means the worst book (that honor belongs to Connie Brown)on TA even though it's turgidly written , but I'm not sure how you use it to make money except to write one of your own which draws lots of complex geometric figures over winning trades. (I'll have to do a 3D one that projects price and time onto the surface of a parabolic hyperboloid and call it 'Non-Euclidean Trading'). Keep your money, people.

Practical Fibonacci Tricks v Guesswork

If you wanted a countertrend method for trading and like to add Fibonacci shapes, this is the book. While wave counts are certainly important, the book gives confirmation for wave counts by either Fibonacci summations or time goal ratios to confirm your current wave. There is no guarantee actual price will comply, but then any pattern trade should have no guarantee either--pennants, head and shoulders, etc. Worth a look if you are looking to add another trick to the bag of trading strategies. Also, work the examples so you will see the author actually losses money on some trades using this strategy and makes money in others. Looks like the author has integrity and some honestly because he presents the frequency of trades, success/failures, profit/loss, and graphs to confirm his trades.

Not an Easy Read!

I am smiling at one reviewer who says this book is an easy read. Wow! The guy must have an I.Q. of at least 150. I am not even 1/3 thru the book and my brain is totally fried. The software? It doesnt seem to be usable for someone at less than a very advanced fibonacci level.

Essentials of MMPI-A Assessment is an extremely useful addition to this great series. Like with other Essentials titles I own, there is an easy-to-read format that lets me use it as a reference. This book is an excellent tool for scoring and interpreting the MMPI-A, and I definately would recommend it to my fellow clinicians.

It's About Time

It's about time someone wrote about what really makes Berkshire Hathaway unique. There are so many books on Warren Buffett which attempt to reorganize his annual letters that it is really refreshing to read something new. This book has great content and really delves into the Berkshire compound money machine. It is a required read for investors as well as managers.

Great book about the inner workings of BRK

Skim through the back of the 2002 annual report, and you'll see a list of the dozens of operating subsidiary companies within Berkshire. To my knowledge, this book covers the managers of these companies in more depth than any other book. It is essential to learn about these managers because among them will be chosen the successors of Mr. Buffett. Personally, reading this book gives me confidence in the future of Berkshire in the post-Buffett/Munger era. I especially liked the chapter on Ajit Jain, who has not been covered by other books. This book is an absolute must read for those planning on holding their Berkshire shares forever.

Armed with information gleaned from eight months of intensive interviews, Miles uncovers what makes a Berkshire manager tick, and covers the workings of Berkshire, itself, as well. Writing through the voices of the CEOs he portrays, Miles skillfully weaves the colorful histories of 18 firms into a revealing set of success stories. Many tales are similar - the CEOs love their companies; they worked hard to build solid businesses and no one regrets selling his firm to Berkshire. They all sound genuinely happier than you might possibly believe, and each chapter has business models you shouldn't miss. Although several leading scientists in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries possessed a clear, operational understanding of the idea of robust statistics, the field was not recognized as a legitimate area of investigation until the mid-1960s. Briefly, a statistical method that exhibits an insensitivity to deviation from its own assumptions, is robust. The present volume represents the first systematic, book-length exposition of the subject. The treatment here is theoretical, with the stress on concepts rather than on extensive mathematical completeness. Chapter 1 provides a general introduction and overview. Chapter 2 contains an account of the formal mathematical background behind qualitative and quantitative robustness. Chapter 3 introduces the M-, L-, and R-estimates, and Chapter 4 treats the asymptotic minimax theory for location estimates. Chapters 5 to 11 branch out in different directions and are basically self-contained, covering scale estimates, multiparameter problems, regression, robust covariance and correlation matrices, robustness of design, exact finite sample results, and miscellaneous topics. The text describes selected numerical algorithms for computing robust estimates, provides convergence proofs where possible, and includes numerous tables with quantitative robustness information for a variety of estimates. Robust Statistics reorganizes, summarizes and extends a wealth of material only partially available in published form, providing a solid foundation in robustness for statisticians, mathematicians and graduate students.

classic early text on robust methods

In the 1970s Peter Huber was one of the innovative geniuses that developed the area of robust statistical methods. After the famous Princeton robustness study that Huber participated in there was a scattered set of techniques that were shown to be robust estimators of location based on simulations over wide classes of probability distributions. Huber and Hampel were the leaders at putting together some mathematical theory for robustness.

This book was the first attempt to unify the mathematical ideas into a general theory. It is intended for research statisticians and is a masterpiece for the subject. Solid foundation in robust statistics

If you need clear explanations about robust statistics, if you need ideas to perform robust regression, or if you need some ground to develop robust algorithms, all you need is this text, and only this text. It covers theoretical as well as practical aspects of robust statistics. If you need more modern theoretical materials on robust statistics, Rieder's Asymptotic Robust Statistics is the companion text.

Professor Huber really owns this subject

Professor Huber has established himself as one of the titans of robust statistics, with numerous texts and monographs on the subject spanning multiple decades. With this 2nd edition of his comprehensive look at what it means for a statistic to be robust, Prof. Huber helps the mathematical statistician dive deeply into formal algebraic descriptions of robustness that are broadly applicable.

A small word of caution: This text assumes at least one-semester graduate-level introductions to real analysis and topology; otherwise, many of the discussions even in Chapter 1 will be mystifying. But if a little bit of weak(-star) topology talk doesn't faze you, then you're in for a treat!

Great math book

The book was extremely concise and was very thorough in explaining the probability functions and other statisitic topics. I am a Masters student and I found this book dealt with the fundamentals in a perfect way. The CD that comes with the book with key solutions for the assignment questions was great. Made me learn Minitab for solutions in a very easy manner. This book is a good read and very rich in fundamentals and explanations. I wish they had more solutions for the assignments. But I loved it and got a good grade in my class. Thanks for such a great book!

GARY GROTH-MARNAT, PhD, is in private practice in Santa Barbara, California, and is an adjunct professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara. He is the author of three books and more than 100 journal articles and book chapters.

Great Book- but needs better copyediting

This book offers an excellent overview of many aspects of psych assessment. It was very helpful in reviewing for quals- but watch out! There are several errors in this book! The specificity of a test is incorrectly explained, as is MMPI-2 TRIN interpretation. Some wierd formatting inconsistencies pop up in the Rorschach section... I don't recommend this book for 1st year grad students who are learning this material for the first time because they won't catch the errors and may learn things incorrectly.

Excellent resource for practicing clinincians and students

Having read/reviewed numerous 'handbooks,' this is probably the best of the breed. Groth-Marnat has done an excellent job of covering the main assessment techniques used by clinicians to psychologically evaluate patients. Clinicians will find this handbook indispensable, and, in fact, (I predict) will keep it parked on their desk for ready access. Students will find the book thorough, informative and practical. If you are serious about psychological assessment, this one is a 'must-have.' You won't be disappointed.
