Excellent text, but lacks plenty of case studies!

This is an excellent introductory text for a graduate-level abnormal or even upper-level undergraduate-level abnormal psychology course. However, my major complaint with the book; besides, it being too bulky and heavy, is the simple fact that it doesn't include enough case studies. Granted, it's sprinkled with a few case studies, here and there, but it focuses mailny on research and gives an excellent discussion on the DSM-IV. This is an excellent book to be used in conjuction with the DSM-IV-TR; however, as I've stated earlier, the book needs to be made more thinly with the text still intact and the book needs case studies for each chapter, which it currently doesn't in this 4th edition.

Bottom-line: Good book, but bulky and lacks a plethora of case studies; hence, 4 stars!

This books is in detail of the DSM 4 book. It explains a lot if you have to use the DSM 4 this is a book for you to understand the meanings and symptoms in the DSM 4. Hope everyone enjoy's it like I do. Thanks for getting it to me as quickly as you did.

increased govt regulation

The book is written for an American reader who might be a manager for an electric utility company, or for someone who might be involved in trading electricity. There is a slight defensive tone about the latter purpose, given the Enron fraud meltdown.

There is an elementary discussion of the physics involved in power generation and transmission. To give the reader a basic understanding of what actually happens. Including the physical limits of a transmission line on the amount of current that it can bear. As well as the transmission losses incurred when selling energy over long distances.

But much of the book deals at a higher level. Notably, explaining how to comply with government regulations, including the various regulatory bodies, where these might be at the Federal or state level. Not surprising, given the Enron scandal, which is still unfolding, and the heightened government scrutiny over the entire utility industry.

Not Bad But Too Many Typos

As you can see from the information above, this book is aimed for the non-technical reader. It attempts to give that reader a familiarity with the technical aspects of the electrical power system in the US (first half of the book), and also to give the reader a good understanding of the regulatory issues involved (second half of the book).

I've read most of the first half of the book so far. It's not bad, BUT, I'm amazed that a book put out by the IEEE (that's Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) has as many annoying typos as this one has. Here are some examples:

1) The book consistently uses the abbreviation "m" to indicate one million, when of course the proper abbreviation is "M" (note the capital letter). This is not a minor point for a non-technical reader, because "m" is the proper abbreviation for one-thousandth, and is used in technical books such as this one all the time, to mean ONE-THOUSANDTH. I don't recall looking at another book of this type that makes this mistake.

2) One of the formulas in the book ends in the superscripted footnote "10". This superscripted "10" is placed directly to the right of the formula's rightmost variable, so it looks like that variable is to be raised to the 10th power.

3) One table in the book, which shows the cost of various fuels in dollars per "MMBTU", is difficult to understand, because the abbreviation "MM", which I believe is meant to stand for one million in this table, is not defined.

Yes, each of these examples appears to be minor, but for the non-technical reader trying to make sense of the technical text, the errors are, at the very least, annoying and misleading. I think the errors could have been corrected if the author or the publisher had employed a proper copy editor for about 8 hours.

It's a decent book, though; and the first half of the book pretty much fulfills its objective.

Hatch, a former reporter, offers a fresh and comprehensive reassessment of Black Kettle, a charismatic nineteenth-century Cheyenne chief who advocated for peace with white Americans. A member of the Bowstring Society (a warrior caste), Black Kettle negotiated for tribal land protection and lessons in farming. Why did this particular warrior recognize that peace was the only way for his people to survive? Hatch tentatively suggests that Black Kettle regarded himself as a prophet and was motivated by more than military concerns. In spite of repeated betrayals by the U.S. Army--including the 1864 massacre at Sand Creek, in which one-third of Black Kettle's group were killed--the elder statesman continued to pursue a nonviolent compromise. But in 1868 Black Kettle and many of his fellow villagers were killed by George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry in the Washita River massacre. We honor their memories not for their success, but for their courage. There was another great chief, no less courageous, who believed that the only way to save his people was by waging peace instead of war. His name was Black Kettle.

This is the first biography of one of the most intriguing figures in the history of the American West. It traces the life of Black Kettle from the days of his youth, when he proved his courage and leadership skills in battles against enemy tribes, through his elevation to chief of the Cheyennes–and his realization that, for the good of his people, he must become a statesman rather than a warrior. It documents his ceaseless efforts to achieve just treaties with the United States, even in the face of death threats from members of his own tribe, and describes his ultimate betrayal by the very authorities with whom he struggled to make peace. A Great Biography About An Important Man

It has been 140 years since that dark dawn rose over the eastern plains of Colorado bathing the land in blood and gore at Sand Creek. Countless books have been written about the subject, and its story has been recounted in film. Today, there are those who believe it was a massacre, others it was a battle that turned into a massacre, but to all academic historians Chivington's attack upon a sleeping village of Cheyenne and Arapaho was nothing but a massacre turned into a blood bath of unspeakable horror.

A new book by Thom Hatch is now available entitled, "Black Kettle: The Cheyenne Chief Who Sought Peace But Found War" The book is the first ever written biography about the Cheyenne leader. And, Sand Creek is at the center of Black Kettle's life.

Black Kettle is more than a story of one man's life. The story Hatch shares is rich in Plains Indian culture focusing on the Cheyenne people along with their form of government, laws, religion, courtship, and military society. The narrative follows the Cheyenne relationships with other tribes that were both productive and destructive. Hatch also describes life for the Cheyenne after the white man enters the scene. Hatch's passages about the warrior societies are filled with pageantry, color, and ritual.

Much of what Hatch discusses in this portion of the book has been written before, but Black Kettle finally becomes a human being instead of just a symbol of the wrongs committed against the Indians. After Black Kettle witnessed the peace gathering between his people and the Kiowas, Hatch explains its effect upon the Cheyenne leader.

"Perhaps this event made enough of an impression upon Black Kettle that it served as a lesson in shaping his future role as a man who believed that peace with any enemy - even the white man - was attainable if both parties were honorable and sincere with their promise to become friends."

The centerpiece of any story around Black Kettle has to be the Sand Creek Massacre and Hatch does not disappoint the reader. There can be no honest telling of Sand Creek that doesn't move the reader, and the story of Black Kettle at Sand Creek is powerful. Black Kettle leads as many of his people as he can to safety to the Sand Pits except for his wife, Medicine Woman Later, who is shot down near the creek in a hail of bullets.

At twilight, Black Kettle returns to find his wife as the soldiers commit the atrocities around him. Finding Medicine Woman Later still alive, Black Kettle carries her on his back for miles until he catches-up with the survivors, who by now are moving northeast away from the killing field. Putting his wife on a horse, Black Kettle leads his people to the Dog Soldier camps.

So ends the Sand Creek Massacre, but far more of the life of Black Kettle follows. A true leader is one that stands up for what he believes, never wavers, and makes decisions based solely on the betterment of his people, not for how it might make his life better. Black Kettle was such a leader. Black Kettle continued to sue for peace from the white man, even after Sand Creek, even though many of his people chastised him for it, even though the intimidation of the Dog Soldiers tried to stop him. Black Kettle knew his people would be doomed if they continued to fight the people moving into their lands. He believed peace was the only choice the Cheyenne had to save what they could of their way of life.

Tom Hatch brings us the complete life of Black Kettle -- his analysis of the man's life and the events surrounding it is fresh, bold, and provides new challenges for future researches.

One American's Most Shameful Episodes

The title should read, "Black Kettle, the Cheyenne Chief who Sought Life and Found Only Death". This is a difficult book to read because the story is not only true but shameful. As someone from Colorado, I was horrified to learn many of our streets and city areas are named after men who were often theives, liars, opportunists and some even condoned the murder of the Native Americans. One tries to frame the story in the context of the time and the ignorance and the misunderstandings of the of white America, yet in 2005 the site of the Sand Creek massacre is a minor footnote that most Coloradians are unaware and The Black Hills still have not been returned to the Souix, so has our sense of justice towards Native Americans really changed? The book does a excellent, informative telling of the story of a very shameful part of Colorado and American history.This is the story of an exceptional man who rightly always believed in peace but wrongly believed in the U.S. government. We should be reminded of this past and never forget the genocide that was carried out in the country in the name of westward expansion. Black Kettle should be remembered as man who was as great in statue as any American hero.

A peaceful man who deserved better

With the coming of the Europeans to America's shores, it was only a matter of time before the settlers whose ancestors were from the Old World would lock horns with the many Native American tribes that roamed across the Great Plains. With only a small amount of traffic going across the Santa Fe Trail beforehand, the discovery of gold near preent-day Denver sparked a rush of miners and others who would profit from the new discoveries. The resulting antagonsim from the influx of settlers into Indian lands resulted in attacks depredations by the Indians as well as counterattacks from the whites.

This book is about the life of the Cheyenne chief, Black Kettle, who saw that the combined forces of the Indians of the plains would be no match for the might of the United States Army and tried to resolve the conflicts between the two races peacefully. Not only did he face opposition from the new settlers, but also from members of his own tribe, especially the fierce Dog Soldiers.

The story is told brilliantly by the author and it illustrates the conflict, the betrayal of the Indians by corrupt Indian agents and U.S. soldiers through fraud and broken treaties and the needless killing of innocent women and children at Sand Creek, CO in 1864 and along the Washita River near present-day Cheyenne, OK in 1868 where Black Kettle would meet his tragic demise at the hands of General Custer.

Despite the harshness of his life, Black Kettle fervently sought peace for his people and did what he could to keep violence at a minimum to his last days. He learned from his experiences that peace was possible, for his tribe the Cheyenne made peace with their previous enemies, the Kiowas and the Comanches. It is a shame that it has been only in the past few years that a biography of any kind has been created for Black Kettle. Mr. Hatch does a yeoman's job of bringing to life the career of this peaceful man who tried to minimize the sorrow of his people that still exists unto this day.

The book is a quick read at around 270 pages with a good biblipgraphy, endnotes and index. I recommend this book to anybody who wants to drop the old myths and tales about the original inhabitants of this land.

About the Author
JAMES LAM is President of James Lam & Associates, an independent risk advisory firm. Before starting his own firm, Lam was founder and president of ERisk and partner of Oliver, Wyman & Company. In 1997, as Chief Risk Officer at Fidelity Investments, he was named the first-ever Financial Risk Manager of the Year by the Global Association of Risk Professionals. Prior to Fidelity, he was chief risk officer of Capital Markets Services, Inc., a GE Capital Company. Lam graduated with honors from Baruch College and received his MBA from UCLA. He is also currently an Adjunct Professor of Finance at Babson College.

This book is a must read for all mid-level and executive level managers

James Lam has written a remarkably clear and relevant portrayal of how [enterprise] risk management can be used to deliver real value in any business.

During the past year, I developed a course for the Executive MBA program at Villanova University. After reviewing several books on the subject, I chose this one because of its clear and comprehensive coverage of the subject matter.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone with a serious interest in understanding risk management from a holistic perspective. This includes risk professionals as well as those involved in line and staff functions.

Remarkably Succinct Coverage of a Hot New Topic

You bought Jorion, Pearson, and Hull; you slammed headfirst into the quantitative quagmire of risk management, and you may even have passed the Financial Risk Manager exam, sponsored by the Global Association of Risk Professionals, but are you prepared to become your company's "Risk Champion?" Can you explain to laymen why loss distributions are not normal? Can you illustrate the "sweet spot" in the profit/risk tradeoff? If you aren't quite there yet, pick up James Lam's new book, Enterprise Risk Management, From Incentives to Controls. It's a book you can read on the five hour flight from New York to Los Angeles, and its melodies will linger in your memory. Definitely Worth a Read

A well-written guide to enterprise risk management from somebody who knows it first hand. The book covers all of the relevant topics within ERM: concepts and processes, governance, risk transfer, analytics, risk types, and applications to the business (lessons learned, case studies, etc.).

The book is tilted towards banking and energy and could use an update on how ERM has become vogue among corporations in almost every other sector. It could also include more information on operational risk and Sarbanes-Oxley requirements, as well as more recent info on the topic from leading risk organizations and projects (COSO and others). It is not a one stop shop on the subject - hence just four stars.

If you have a chance to work with risk managers and/or risk consultants, see the latest dashboard tools, or sit in on risk assessment and ranking exercises, I believe you'll get much more from the book. There is a lot of "dot-connecting" that needs to go on with ERM.

And a special endorsement...I once received a very attractive offer from a leading Fortune 500 company for an enterprise risk manager position. I had just a little experience with ERM, but I used material from this book to get me through six probing interviews. Very few books can help a candidate quite the way this one helped me.

Tops for the job, just like Reagan

This was just what the doctor ordered. I was able to finagle the business and cajole my parents into leaving everything either to me alone or at least with my hooks in it. Seven children and seventeen grandchildren, all scheming and backbiting to get as much as possible and fritter it away. I had to get some sort of help to get me past the family values claptrap. I mean, how are you going to do your patriotic duty to the economy and keep estates intact and working for the profit of a few? What's the point of protecting inheritances from taxes if they're just going to be sawed up into a million pieces?

Excellent primer on scientifically-based nutrition

This is an excellent primer on nutrition, and it's important to note that it is based on scientific research. This book will explain why the standard American diet of animal products and refined carbs is making us sick and fat, giving us type 2 diabetes, cancer, heart disease, among a host of other ailments. While the USDA food pyramid has traditionally been based on demands from the agribusiness lobby (livestock, dairy, etc.), this book focuses solely on what science has shown us. I would recommend this book to anyone. The only thing missing from a plant-based diet is Vitamin B-12, so be sure to take a supplement if you choose to go vegan. Otherwise, read this book and prepare to lose weight, feel more energy, clear up your acne, balance your hormones, and get healthy! Optimal Health for Women

It is amazing how much of the conventional "wisdom" about nutrition is promulgated by people and organizations with a serious conflict of interest. People often talk about a "vegan agenda" while ignoring the agendas of the meat industry, the dairy industry, etc. It's time to look past all of that and just look at the facts. People who eat plant-based diets enjoy better health and suffer from fewer chronic diseases than those who eat the standard American diet.
