About the Author
ROBERT F. BRUNER is the Distinguished Professor of Business Administration at the Darden School of the University of Virginia and Executive Director of the Batten Institute. He directs the Darden School’s executive education course on mergers and acquisitions, and teaches the popular MBA elective on that topic. He is the author of over 250 case studies and a casebook, Case Studies in Finance: Managing for Corporate Value Creation, which has been adopted for use at over 200 schools. Bruner’s articles have been published in the Journal of Financial Economics, the Journal of Accounting and Economics, the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, and Financial Management. He has served as a consultant to over twenty corporations as well as to the U.S. Government, and prior to his academic career, worked as a commercial banker and venture capitalist. Bruner holds a BA from Yale University, and an MBA and DBA from Harvard University.

W/O CD-ROM = you can't see the formulas inside the charts.

The content is superb. However, there seems to be 4 books with this title. One with hardcover, one with hardcover and CD-ROM, one with subtitle, "workbook", and one with subtitle,"university edition". You should know which one you really want. Then proceed your purchase. Hope the description of the title in Amazon was more friendly to kindle users.

I first thought I do not CD-Rom and I just work on the problem sets. But you will find many charts in this book and it says those spreadsheets are included in CD-ROM. This makes people crazy, I think. If this does not have CD-ROM, I wish this content eliminate the descriptions in each chart, which says it's in the CD-ROM. It is kind of annoying description.

CD-ROM is only in the more expensive hard cover text book.I really do not understand why the textbook has all the contents including the workbook edition, which the textbook doesn't cover. (I recommend that textbook CD-ROM covers only about textbook and workbook provides the spreadsheets online.

But here's good news. Even if you do not have CD-ROMs, the qualitative parts are very sufficient for study.

I am an investment banker and I found this book to be boring, dry, and unclear. The book does not do a good job of tying similar topics together, nor does it go into enough depth on many issues.

This book says it comes with what promises to be a very informative CD. After three atempts and supplies it does not. This detarcts substantially from the book. It can hardly be recommended.

On the cover of this book is a Pacific yew tree, found in the ancient forests of the Pacific Northwest.

The bark of the Pacific yew tree produces Taxol, found to be a highly effective drug against ovarian and breast cancer. Taxol blocks mitosis during eukaryotic cell division. The supply of Taxol from the Pacific yew tree is vanishingly small, however.
A single 100-year-old tree provides only about one dose of the drug (roughly 300 mg). For this reason, as well as the spectacular molecular architecture of Taxol, synthetic organic chemists fiercely undertook efforts to synthesize it. Five total syntheses of Taxol have thus far been reported. Now, a combination of isolation of a related metabolite from European yew needles, and synthesis of Taxol from that intermediate, supply the clinical demand.

This case clearly demonstrates the importance of synthesis and the use of organic chemistry. It's just one of the many examples used in the text that will spark the interest of students and get them involved in the study of organic chemistry!

About the Author
T. W. Graham Solomons did his undergraduate work at The Citadel and received his doctorate in organic chemistry in 1959 from Duke University where he worked with C. K. Bradsher. Following this he was a Sloan Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Rochester where he worked with V. Boekelheide. In 1960 he became a charter member of the faculty of the Univrsity of South Florida and became Professor of Chemistry in 1973. In 1992 he was made Professor Emeritus. In 1994 he was a visiting professor with the Faculté des Sciences Pharmaceutiques et Biologiques, Université René Descartes (Paris V). He is a memeber of Sigma Xi, Phi Lambda Upsilon, and Sigma Pi Sigma. He has received research grants from the Research Corporation and the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund. For several years he was director of an NSF-sponsored Undergraduate Research Participation Program at USF. His research interest have been the areas of heterocyclic chemistry and unusual aromatic compounds. He has published papers in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, the Journal of Organic Chemistry, and the Journal of Heterocyclic Chemistry. He has received several awards for distinguished teaching. His organic chemistry textbooks have been widely used in 20 years and have been translated inot Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Malaysian, Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian. He and his wife Judith have a daughter who is a geophysicist and two younger one.

Craig Barton Fryhle is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemistry at Pacific Lutheran University. He earned his B.A. degree from Gettysburg College and Ph.D. from Brown University. Professor Fryhle's research interests relate to enzymes and metabolites of the shikimic acid pathway. His current research involves conformational studies of shikmate pathway substrates and analogues by molecular modeling and NMR spectrometry, and structure and reactivity studies of enzymes in the shikimic acid pathway. He has received research and instrumentation grants from the National Science Foundation, the M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust, and other private foundations. Professor Fryhle's work in chemical education has involved incorporation of active and computer-based learning strategies in organic chemistry, development of new experiments for undergraduate organic and instrumental analysis courses, and background work on the previous edition of this text. He is a volunteer with hands-on science programs in Seattle public schools. He was the 1999 Chair of the Puget Sound Section of the American Chemical Society. He lives in Seattle with his wife Deanna, and daughters Lauren and Heather.

Concepts are fuzzy

I started to use this book from chapter 1-4 and I already dislike it. For instance the nomenclatature section does not explain what is the IUPAC naming for compounds pertaining functional groups well enough. The spectroscopy part, is too basic, it does not present a in-depth view of how important functional groups absorb the IR spectra. Finally, the answer that appear at the back of the book are to few, out of about 40 problems only the solution for 10 of them appear. This makes it difficult if a student wants to check an answer and does not have the solutions manual. If this book continues to be like that, I think that I might study from another book, a Professor recommended me Seyhan Ege.

Older edition, but excellent book.

This was an easy to follow chem book. It is an old edition, but is plenty sufficient if your instructor will allow it. Little has changed in subsequent printings.

This work contributes to graphic design education

"I am particularly impressed with the strength of the sections and introductory texts for each section. It is very cleverly planned and well written. More importantly, the strength of the book for me lies on the fact that the assignments do not illustrate but on the contrary, strengthens your observations, aims/objectives, methodology, structure and propositions for the design education.

The book is also in excellent record of what goes on in design colleges in terms of methods of working (to record students statements and instructors evaluations is, on its own right, a great contribution to knowledge within the design education). The interaction between students statements and instructors evaluations are very important for me. The two different texts create a dialogue within the book.

The book brings theory and practice together for the students and educators which is very rare in design publication and education and even more so at the BA/ undergraduate level.

Design for Communication: Conceptual Graphic Design Basics

This new book, like Elizabeth Resnick's earlier one (Graphic Design: A Problem-Solving Approach to Visual Communication), that was published in the early '80s, has a generous amount of student work on its pages, providing the reader with some wonderful and useful examples of solutions to the problems presented. There's even a section with some of these shown in full color!
When Ms. Resnick wrote her first book, no graphic design was being done on a computer. This current text, published now that we're fully into the digital age, also very wisely steers clear of a "how to" approach. It's all too easy for students starting out in graphic design now to think that it's about "how to use QuarkXPress" or some other software package, but Resnick's book stresses concepts, communication, and the art of creating fresh and thoughtful solutions to design problems. It will help students to learn the importance of research, and how to develop the analytical and conceptual skills they will need as professional designers later on.
The idea of using quality student work as a teaching tool is a very good one. It results in a book that is much more appealing to the student. Each solution has a statement by its creator as well as the instructor's feedback. I think students will find the author's approach to the subject fresh, direct, and very accessible. The presentation of each problem consists of: the Assignment Brief, Objectives, Specifications, Process, and Critiques. This results in a very clear, useful, and well-structured text. I highly recommend this book!

Finally, a graphic design text with depth

There are so many books out there on graphic design that are merely pretty picture books, and focus only on what a piece LOOKS like. What students need is something with depth, something that addresses the conceptual aspects that can be so difficult to grasp.
Resnick's book really targets this need, by presenting an integration of formal and conceptual issues and respecting the students' intelligence in the process. It shows them how FORM influences and strengthens CONCEPT, which I haven't seen in any other text. This is one of the most important (and elusive) issues in graphic design education.
The book is illustrated entirely with student work, all high quality. Students will love this approach; they are used to being shown only the work of experienced professionals.
The book is also going to be really useful for instructors
who want to improve the rigor and depth of their assignments but aren't sure how to go about it.

Plait, a science writer who works in the physics and astronomy department at Sonoma State University, is appalled that millions of Americans don't believe the moon landing really took place and do believe that Galileo went blind from looking at the sun, or that they can make an egg stand on end only on the vernal equinox. Bad Science Encounters Good Science

Answer true or false to these ten statements:

1) The sky is blue because it reflects the blue color of the oceans.
2) The seasons are caused by the Earth's tilt.
3) The Moon's phases are due to the shadow of the Earth falling on the Moon.
4) The bright glow of a meteor is not caused by friction as it passes through the Earth's atmosphere.
5) There are no stars seen in Apollo Moon-landing pictures thus proving that these landings were staged.
6) The Hubble Space Telescope is bigger than all Earth-based telescopes.
7) Stars in the night sky do have color.
8) The Moon is bigger near the horizon than when it's overhead.
9) In the southern hemisphere, winters are much warmer than those in the northern hemisphere.
10) X-rays are emitted from the eclipsed sun but these X-rays do not damage your eyes if you look at the eclipsed sun.

This book, by Dr. Phillip Plait (creator of the bad astronomy internet site), corrects 24 common misconceptions of astronomical science. This book divides these misconceptions into five parts. All science is fully explained so the reader does not have to have extensive scientific knowledge. As well, there are diagrams and black-and-white photographs to aid the scientific discussions. Finally, there are recommended books and recommended internet sites for those who want to know more.

Part one explains three misconceptions that occur in the home. The second part deals with five misconceptions about the Earth and Moon. Part three unravels eight misconceptions regarding things in the night sky (such as stars, planets, and meteors). The fourth part is concerned with five bad explanations of various events (such as the Moon-landings and UFOs). Lastly, part five is a special section covering three astronomy topics (such as bad astronomy in the movies).

For those who have a science background (such as myself), don't feel tempted to skip a section because you feel you know the correct answer to a misconception. This is because each chapter contains much important detail. For me, I found that for those sections where I felt I knew the correct scientific answer, I still learned a lot because other interesting information was presented to enhance the discussion.

Finally, I did find an error in the UFO section. This section implies that no amateur astronomers have seen UFOs. Actually, the majority of amateur astronomers have not seen them but a small minority have seen them.

In conclusion, we are bombarded by bad science every day. In order to turn bad science into good science, you have to start reading good science books. This book is a good place to start!!

Stuff that's good to know

I agree with most of the earlier reviewers: the author has a sense of humor. More, he has a sense of disgust at those who don't know what he does.
True, that can be entertaining. However, it some ways, it strikes me as a bit too smark alecky (Is that how you spell that?)
I too have fancied myself as an amateur astronomer for years. Some of the "trivia" in the book is okay, like the different between meteorite and meteoroid. Some is a little more incidental. That's where some gets a tad offensive: I've been critical of social scientists who act like they know something us peons without multiple letters after our name don't know. Plait comes across that way at times. "You idiots. You should know what I do!" True, some of that any non-idiot SHOULD know, so that makes up for the bulk of the sarcasm.
Then there's the moon hoax. In fact, that was my favorite section. Some questions of those who challenge the veracity of Apollo 11 and following--there are a few. I know one, for example--can, if you stretch, seem almost reasonable. Plait did a good job of answering them.
And his Hollywood section was particularly amusing. I could discount the filmmakers who show their spacecraft swooshing through the vacuum of space as naive or ill informed. But they should know a little before much of what they show. (That, in fact, is one of the reason I've always recommended Kubrick's "2001 : A Space Odyssey." When there was no medium, like air, to convey a sound in space, the film was, appropriately, silent!)
Overall it was a worthwhile book. I would recommend it to, say, persons interested in astronomy, space, or even science fiction. And I've already bookmarked Plait's bad astronomy web page. (Thanks Phil.) But to its weaknesses I've referred. Just don't let those discourage you from the book.

Lyme disease is so difficult to detect that the average sufferer sees five physicians before the disease is properly diagnosed. Thirty-five percent of Lyme disease patients suffer permanent bodily damage, and 17 percent lose their jobs. Karen Vanderhoof-Forschner fared even worse than that: she contracted the disease while pregnant (it was misdiagnosed as arthritis), and passed it on to her unborn child, who died when he was 6. She became an expert on ticks and the diseases they spread, started the Lyme Disease Foundation, and compiled all her knowledge into this book, a handy guide for anyone living in tick-infested areas.

This is an excellent overview of the disease with detail a doctor or interest patient would want to know. It handles information with non-alarmist views and scientific accuracy.
Even better is the updated new version that includes data on other tick-borne diseases. The writing shows respect for patients and the medical community.
I really like the information that addresses the questions about possible Lyme and other diseases in the midwest and other areas that are not considered to have lyme disease.

This is NOT an alarmist's book, but a MUST READ!

My children and I have chronic Lyme disease. I was misdiagnosed for over twelve years and unknowingly passed the disease to my children via pregnancy. Contrary to the reader's statement that this is an "alarmist" book, this book is a MUST READ, especially for anyone suffering with this disease. The reader who stated otherwise should be ashamed to have sounded the alarmist bell him/herself (especially since that reader does NOT have Lyme disease and therefore has no idea of the suffering involved)! Antibiotics are effective only if the disease is caught early, as early as within 48 hours of infection and perhaps as long as up to 6 weeks after infection. Otherwise, the odds dramatically decrease for antibiotics working to rid one of Lyme disease. Unfortunately, by the time symptoms are apparent, it is usually too late for antibiotics to effectively treat the disease. Only approximately 40% of persons with Lyme disease remember a tick bite or develop the "bull's-eye" rash. Therefore, most persons with the disease go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed and untreated for an extended time. Once finally diagnosed after I was again bitten and did see a tick bite and rash, my children and I suffered through several months of antibiotic treatment that made us sicker, not better, and not just from spirochete "die off", but because the antibiotics started to attack our systems. Most persons with Lyme disease WILL continue with certain possibly irreversible symptoms, such as Lyme-related arthritis, even after antibiotic treatment. Integrative medicine, which is a combination treatment of homeopathic (alternative, such as certain herbs and nutritional supplements) and allopathic (conventional, such as antibiotics) as well as dietary changes (such as reduction or elimination of meat consumption, as well as eliminating all sugars) appears to be the best approach for sufferers of Lyme disease, especially those with chronic Lyme disease. The fact is that Lyme disease IS scary and IS a huge problem of epidemic proportion that MUST be addressed. Sticking ones head in the sand and hoping it will simply go away or ignoring the cold, hard, at times frightening facts of this disease is irresponsible. The reader who refuses to give this book to his/her friend who has Lyme disease is doing that friend a grave disservice. Those of us with Lyme disease recognize a factual account as opposed to an "alarmist" point of view. I for one appreciate the TRUTH. This book is well researched and honestly written. EVERYONE should read this book, whether they have Lyme disease or not. Often, persons diagnosed with nervous system disorders, such as MS, or autoimmune disorders, such as Lupus, actually have Lyme disease. I reiterate: THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE.

Good "second book" on accounting reform

If you want to learn about accounting scams, you probably need Mulford and Comiskey, The Financial Numbers Game. But for a broader view of the virtues and limits of accounting, Eccles and company have a lot to offer. You can skip or skim the somewhat overhyped stuff about the "ValueRevolution" itself (note that three of the authors come from PricewaterhouseCoopers, where they seem to be having some trouble with their space bar, or spacebar). Keep your best brain cells for chapters three through eight, where you get a look at the earnings obsession -- and just as useful, a suggestion of what investors really need and want. Note that one of the co-authors (Robert H. Herz) is the new head of the Financial Accounting Standards Board).

A Call to Arms

"ValueReporting" smoothly describes many broken financial reporting processes, including "whispering", a time-consuming process that CFOs play with analysts, where CFOs "whisper" their earnings expectations to the analyst, making the analysts appear intelligent. A great deal for the analyst cause they don't have to do any real analysis. If the CFO does not play this game, they risk the wrath of Wall Street.
The problem with this is that it is in violation of the spirit (if not the law) of the yet to be enforced SEC Fair Disclosure Act which states that Sally Q. Public gets to know material information the same time that John Q. Analyst does.
"ValueReporting" does offer a practical solution through XBRL technology. As a member of XBRL.org I strongly agree with the authors that if business reporting, both financial and non-financial, is standardized, Web technologies are in place to distribute this information uniformly to all investors and in a richer format than at present. With the gentle prodding of regulatory agencies like the SEC and FDIC, this will happen sooner rather than later. Let's hope that SEC Chairman Unger reads this book, and fast.
For me as a consultant and a technologist "who can spell XBRL", The ValueReporting Revolution was a call to arms to apply my knowledge to the inequities of financial reporting. Helping clients sell their wares over the Web is nice, but to level the financial playing field for small companies as well as large, for the small investor as well as the institutional, is ennobling. And forcing Wall Street analysts to actually work for a living, would be, well, just icing on the cake.

This is the most lucid coverage of an accounting topic that I have ever read, and also the clearest in marrying the underlying accounting principles to the related software topics. The first part of the book explains what Value Reporting is (no surprises here) and why it is needed (in theory). The book then gives how-to examples to clarify the concept. The middle of the book distinguishes this book from many other similar texts -- it explores the history of audited financial reporting, examines previous reforms and why they did not succeed more fully, then gives a data-rich analysis of why Value Reporting is REALLY needed. The last third of the book is even better: It discusses problems and opportunities in Value Reporting; it discusses how the underlying software technology -- both XML (extensible markup language -- a specification or a grammar for a class of languages, but not a specific language itself) and XBRL (extensible business reporting language, a specific
"dialect" or implementation of the XML grammar) make it possible to implement Value Reporting; finally, the book explores deficiencies in XBRL and how they need to be corrected if they are to support implementation of Value Reporting.
The book is a lucid and pleasant read for accounting experts, software experts, and the much larger population of professionals who are potential users and consumers of Value Reporting.
The authors are multidimensional professionals -- they are developers and users of modern systems of financial reporting, and they are experts both in developing the theory of Value Reporting and in implementing specific real-life applications.
The book explains several unusual technical and managerial principles in clear and everyday terms, without getting sloppy or misleading for expert readers. Perhaps it is because of the authors' technical qualifications and their experience in applying their expertise to everyday managerial and reporting problems, that they are able to clarify without oversimplifying an almost obvious topic based on quite advanced accounting and software techniques.
In the interest of full disclosure to readers who should know something about the reviewer, he holds earned doctorates in Information Theory (Yale) and Mathematics (University of Paris). Between two tours of duty in the US Government at the level of assistant secretary, under secretary, and finally chief executive of an independent agency, he was founding chairman of a software company that was, for quite a few years, an acknowledged leader in designing and implementing financial reporting and control systems.
He is today chairman of two start-up technology companies, one of which is applying its technology and software to questions of Value Reporting.

About the Author
R. MARTIN SMITH is a former forensic chemist and quality assurance coordinator at the Wisconsin Department of Justice Crime Laboratories in Madison, Wisconsin. He received his PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and has numerous publications dealing with the application of mass spectrometry to forensic science.

I just completed a three day course with Marty with his text as the outline. Absolutely helpful! Training in controlled substance analysis often only includes pattern recognition for comparison of unknown samples to standards. The information in this book will get you well on your way to recognizing what is going on in the spectra you already know and will help provide information when no standard matches. Thanks Marty, this book is a great reference assistant!
