Great Intro to the Most Basic Concepts (level: middle school)

I bought the Kindle version of this book and the first thing I noticed is that the author book assumes an American readership and skews its examples accordingly. So if you're curious about Australia's weather patterns, for example, there's not much here.

For North Americans, this book is a good introduction to physical geography for kids about middle school age and up (Rose the Bat Lady notwithstanding, a kid doesn't have to be a super genius to absorb the material). The information given is clearly explained by a writer who respects young people's intelligence.

However, it does not have the sorts of colorful, super-entertaining illustrations that today's kids expect. Instead, it offers very simple black & white line drawings of the type one expects to find in much older books. So four stars instead of five because of visuals.

On the other hand, perhaps parents will be encouraged to do supplemental activities such as breaking out the family globe, a flashlight and a bowl of popcorn and demonstrating for their kids the basics of rotation, tilt, revolution and their effects on the sun's illumination of various points on the earth on various days of the year. I guarantee an evening spent this way would not only be great for the whole family but far more memorable than the hippest illustrations ever could be.

Bought it for a high school student gave it to my sixth grader

The text is very easy to understand, but that's a two edge sword because what's easy to understand to one person is painfully boring to another.

I like that after every lesson is a quiz. This makes it easy to see if the material is understood before moving forward.

I would strongly recommend going to a book store or library to see this book firsthand before buying it, if that's at all possible. If that's not possible I would recommend this book for anyone who likes to learn but doesn't have the time or attention available to delve into a meaty tome.

My title is a little misleading, my sixth grader taught himself to build robots and play the trumpet with the aid of good books. Not to brag (ok a little bragging) but as a guideline.

I first read about this in a student's bibliography and had to get a copy for myself. The title pretty much says it all. This is a dictionary of culinary terms, encompassing ingredients, techniques, equipment, and even some complete dishes. Riely has tried to include all the languages likely to be used in an American restaurant kitchen. English, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, and both Cantonese and Mandarin seem to be the most common, but there are bits of German, Portuguese, and others as well. This can create a problem for the serious user, as foreign terms are generally listed only under their native names. For example, if you wanted to know what was really in Fish Sauce, you'd have to know either the Thai or Vietnamese name before you could look it up. Still, this book is great fun for the casual reader. I bought my copy with the intention of using it in conjunction with the kitchen writings of Anthony Bourdain and Poppy Z. Brite. Even so, I find myself flipping from page to page at odd moments, following see-also references through an alphabet of food lore. Who knew that Anago sushi was Conger Eel? (Okay, I knew it was eel, but I didn't know what kind.) Who knew that Vermouth was flavored with Wormwood flowers? Whether you are preparing to dine at a snooty French restaurant, or whether you just like weird professional lingo as much as I do, this is a great book.

It's OK, but it doesn't have a comprehensive dictionary of European culinary terms that are used in America today, and wastes a lot of space on ordinary food explanations. I don't need 1/3 of a page about what a raspberry is.

About the Author
Mikell P. Groover is Professor of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering and Director of the George E. Kane Manufacturing Technology Laboratory at Lehigh University. His industrial experience includes several years as a manufacturing engineer with Eastman Kodak and extensive consulting, research, and project work. His technical articles and papers have been widely published in trade journals, and his six previous books on manufacturing are use throughout the world. The first edition of Fundamentals of Modern Manufacturing received the 1996 IIE Joint Publishers Award and the 1996 M. Eugene Merchant Manufacturing Textbook Award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

I think this is a great reference book. I have had prof. Groover in 3 of my Industrial Engineering classes at Lehigh University. There is not a single semester when I don't go back to use the book as a reference. The book is very easy to read, and to understand.

One of a kind for the level of detail

This magnificent 1,000 page 5th edition of a timeless classic on manufacturing is as much a practical handbook as it is a text. Each page is PACKED with useful formulas, examples, pictures and diagrams solving practical HOW TO problems in manufacturing, from materials science to casting, molding, sintering, welding and much more, including metals, plastics, glass, integrated circuits and far more. There are supposedly only 63 "formal" problems in the whole text, but needless to say the examples themselves, on nearly every page, give practical solutions, rules of thumb, shortcuts and even rigorous formulas where required (although few proofs or derivations, as this is more on the practical side, which is perfect for an applied audience but not if you're teaching theory and proofs of the equations). Some economics are covered, but not a lot, and not in depth, as other texts focus on that aspect as specialties.

I also use this to teach online classes, and although the text is usually $200, many sellers are importing the "international" edition (read: India for $30 new instead of $200) which IS the edition that is reviewed here. If you have a problem with these kinds of imports you might want to pass, but from a content viewpoint it is identical to the $200 edition, the binding is sound, and although the pages are thin and black and white, they are odor free and sturdy enough for handbook use. If you've gotten SI editions before, you know why I mention these parameters. Of course India uses SI units, but that is not as big an issue here since the math is universal.

Highly recommended regardless of which format you choose. Much of the material in this text is becoming a "lost art" in the West today with so much manufacturing having moved to Japan, China and India. Process manufacturing is not covered as extensively as discrete and assembly operations, although items like light bulbs and other silcone and glass processes are now being looked at as discrete liquid flows, with hybrid techniques between process and discrete. There is not a lot of "10,000 foot" detail on strategies between put out, job shop, distributed vs. centralized, indoor vs. outdoor, etc. as in oil refineries vs. auto production, but that's because this is a DETAIL text on the math behind the trees more than the forest. With those caveats in place, you'll find this a treasured addition to your library beside the more general economic, process and strategic/ facility texts.
