Forget the path
By a reader
The book suggests that it will provide 16 paths to bulding wealth, one for each Myers-Briggs type. Unfortunately it does not do so. For mine, what the book refers to as a visionary or INTP, it says instead, to forget building weath because "money is not why Visionaries are here in this lifetime". "Use your talents" is the only suggestion. Maybe others are better, but it appears to use most of its pages to discuss psychology and spends little time prescribing financial strategies.

This is New-Age, Feel Good Investing, People
By Gregory McMahan
You gotta wonder about the kind of person who would write a book with 'Millionaire' in the title, especially a book written written on the subject by someone claiming to have a PhD. Then again, you gotta wonder about the kind of person who would read a book with the word 'Millionaire' in the title, but enough self-incrimination.
The Millionaire Code starts off with the right idea in mind. The author posits that the key to wealth-building begins with understanding one's unique personality, and he uses the (in)famous Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator test as a basis for pinpointing some general aspects of one's personality. Mr. Farrell then uses a variation of the Myers-Briggs test to identify 16 different personality types, analyze some general characteristics of each, and then recommend financial courses of action for each.
The book is liberally sprinkled with lots of Jungian-influenced pop-psychology, notable business quotes by the likes of none other than Warren Buffett and Donald Trump, among others, and is filled to the brim with excerpts from some of the more popular (and more obscure) self-help books. Because of this, I am not really sure how much of the book is the author's own original contribution, and at times I had to wonder about the integrity of the mix.
The book itself is structured in four parts. The first two parts lay out the foundation for the author's assertion that personality is the key to investing, and calls upon the works of Carl Jung, Isabel Myers-Briggs, and David Keirsey for support. It is here that the author boldly states that one's DNA determines one's financial destiny, and this is one claim that I find to be specious (and also unprovable) and which also shows the New Age, pop-LA cultural influence that is also liberally distributed throughout the text. In Part Two he provides a test for the reader to determine his or her personality type.
From there, the book becomes less insightful and original, and more repetitive shaky. Part Three consists of many generalizations about four temperaments to which supposedly every person can be categorized. Part Four presents the sixteen personality types based on these temperaments, and does even more generalizing about the characteristics common to each personality. For each personality, he offers some general comments on the types of profession people having this personality would gravitate to (and apparently most personalities gravitate toward the same professions), and offers some basic advice on personal financial planning for each. It is in this aspect that the book is weakest, as the advice on personal financial planning boils down to either: let a professional financial planner handle your financial affairs (for those whose personalities label them as performers, teacher-healers or artisans), go it alone (for those whose personalities label them as managers, administrators or leaders), or simply to not worry about it, forget about it and focus on other things (for those whose personalities label them as thinkers).
I highly doubt that one would meet with much financial success if one were to follow Mr. Farrell's dubious courses of action. Still, the book is useful, especially for those of us looking to feel better about ourselves and our stance towards personal finance. Each chapter begins and ends with a notable quote, and the author does provide a detailed list for further reading (which Farrell calls the Millionaire's Basic Training Library). Probably the most important chapters in the book are the first, second and epilogue.
The book as a whole is partly anecdotal, with some biographical tidbits about the author placed here and there, and is partly spiritual. This latter part probably reflects the impact that Marsha Sinetar's excellent book, Do What You Love, The Money Will Follow, had on the author. As such, I believe the book deserves to be read, partly for the great quotes from the diverse likes of Joseph Campbell, Carl Jung, Gary Zukav, and Buckminster Fuller, and mostly for entertainment.
That said, I impress upon all readers to enjoy the book, and not take it too seriously, as more than a few of its assertions are rather tenuous. Still, being a fan of Mr. Farrell's frank commentary in his articles for CBS Marketwatch, I must commend him for having the courage to share a part of himself with us and for putting the interesting subject of personality and investing on the spotlight. In passing, much of the book could be used as a source of great fodder for some outstanding fiction.
Finally, this book does not take the reader off the hook for his or her financial decisions. Though it may offer some insight into how we approach (or should approach) our finances, it provides no excuse for not thinking and reasoning about what we are doing when we say that we are 'investing'.

Where's the Beef?
By Artephius (.
Over the years I have really enjoyed Paul Farrell's comments on investing, particularly when he recommends passive index fund strategies.

Farrell's theory for this book revolves around the fact that 96% of Americans are not millionaires....and the reason more people are not millionaires is that their savings and investment strategy is not matched to their personality type (as measured by the Myers-Briggs 16 personality types).

An interesting theory, but unfortunately Farrell provides no research to back up his theory. It would be interesting to random sample the 4% of Americans who are millionaires and determine if their success was determined by matching their savings, investment, and asset allocation strategy to their personality type.

Farrell spends a lot of the book on reviewing and explaining the history and practice of the Myers-Briggs personality tests.

I was expecting that Farrell would next review each of the 16 personality types and then explain how each specific type could achieve a relatively high net worth. He does spend time explaining each of the 16 personality types, but offers almost no explanations and recommendations for increasing net worth.

All in all, I was disappointed in Farrell's book. His theory would have much more validity if he had done the research which linked personality type to the proper savings, investment, and asset allocation strategies. He also should have spent time explaining how each of the 16 personality types could increase their net worth.

A more interesting book linking Myers-Briggs personality types to investment strategies is The Psychology of Money by Jim Ware. It offers more specific recommendations for improving your investment skills based upon your personality type.

I would suggest companion books to supplement this book including The Richest Man in Babylon, Bogle on Mutual Funds, The Millionaire Next Door, The 4 Pillars of Investing, A Random Walk Down Wall Street, Wealth of Experience: Real Investors on what Works and What Doesn't, The Coffeehouse Investor, and the Armchair Millionaire.

From the Inside Flap
The 13th Element It was discovered by alchemists, prescribed by apothecaries, exploited by the industrialists of the nineteenth century, and abused by the combatants of the twentieth century. For more than 300 years, phosphorus-one of nature's deadliest creations-has continued to fascinate us with the many surprising roles it has played in human history. Now, award-winning author John Emsley combines his gift for storytelling with his scientific expertise to present an enthralling account of this eerily luminescent element. First unleashed in the mid-1600s in Hamburg, Germany, when alchemist Hannig Brandt distilled it from human urine, phosphorus was hailed as one of the secret substances of the "philosopher's stone" and a marvelous cure-all. However, it soon became known as the "devil's element" by causing more curses than cures. Although phosphorus matches (called lucifers) were considered "the greatest boon and blessing to come to mankind in the nineteenth century," the women and children who made them endured dangerous and unbearable working conditions and, eventually, the rasping pain of phossy jaw. During World War I, the bum damage done by phosphorus was horrific. During World War II, the Nazis turned phosphorus into chemical agents far more powerful in disabling people than any other war gas. It has for centuries been used as a murderous poison. Whenever man has wanted to commit evil, phosphorus has often been there to help him. But set against these tales of woe are the remarkable benefits of phosphorus. It can be found in many things that have improved our everyday life, from toothpaste to detergents to food additives. And it can also cause wonder; phosphorus is the likely cause of mysterious lights, graveyard ghosts, and spontaneous human combustion! From murders-by-phosphorus where the bodies glowed green to the match factory strike that helped end child labor in England, to the irony of the World War II firebombing of Hamburg, to even deadlier compounds derived from phosphorus today. The 13th Element weaves together a rich tableau of brilliant and oddball characters, social upheavals, and curious, bizarre, and horrific events that comprise the surprising 300-year history of nature's most nefarious element.

Discovered by alchemists, prescribed by apothecaries, exploited by nineteenth-century industrialists, and abused by twentieth-century combatants, phosphorus is one of nature’s deadliest–and most fascinating–creations. Now award-winning author John Emsley combines his gift for storytelling with his scientific expertise to present an enthralling account of this eerily luminescent element. From murders-by-phosphorus where the bodies glowed green, to the match factory strike that helped end child labor in England, to the irony of the World War II firebombing of Hamburg, to even deadlier compounds derived from phosphorus today, The 13th Element weaves together a rich tableau of brilliant and oddball characters, social upheavals, and curious, bizarre, and horrific events that comprise the surprising 300-year history of nature’s most nefarious element.

Elemental phosphorus...
By K. L Sadler
This book was so interesting that I rammed right through it, in spite of being in the midst of moving! I've been on a kick of reading books about elements lately...which is probably good because I can always use this information in the classes I teach. Part of it is wanting to understand how these elements were discovered, and their uses and misuses over the years. Part of it is I've been reading about the Victorian Age and wanted to know more about the problems that they obviously had with chemicals in their environment and in the foods and medications. Apparently phosphorus was a huge part of the problem. If you've read Dickens or some of the other writers from that period, you know a little bit about children working in bad situations. Apparently, the matchmaking industry which was big at this point made a point of using children and teens and young women, who of course, suffered the dire consequences of working with phosphorus (fossy or phossy jaw).

This book was chock full of research. The book talks about how phosphorus was originally obtained through use of urine. It wasn't until the late 1800's that a process was found to abstract phosphorus from minerals. Phosphorus is a very important mineral for human beings. We need it for our bones, but as with most things in the body...it's moderation in all things. Too much of even a good thing is going to end up badly. This book covers all of the dangers of phosphorus, almost too much so. The research is phenomenal, as is the story...but there are some parts that were repetitive. I noticed several places where the author was repeating himself, maybe to draw attention to the facts...but it was too much. The book is quite long anyway, so there was no need to make it longer.

Of course, knowing man's propensity to use anything new they find for weapons, someone got the smart idea of using phosphorus in weapons. This is covered well in the book. The firebombing of Germany was enough to make me cringe. I hope people remember there were atrocities on both sides. I've read plenty on the wrongs of Germany during WWII but that particular chapter of war history on our part is horrendous.

Terrific book, very worth reading.

If you teach chemistry, you must read this book!

Fascinating reading about the mysteries of phosphorus. This covers everthing you wanted to know about phosphorus and more! By the time you finish this book you'll know how phosphorus was discovered, how it contributes to eutrophication (and what exactly eutrophication is, anyway), the symptoms of "phossy jaw", how a match is made, and many other fascinating facts about phosphorus. The author has resisted making this a "fact a page" list, and has put together the history of phosphorus in an ejoyable, coherent fashion. If you love books about chemistry, you'll have trouble putting this one down.

Elementally Fascinating
By Rob Hardy
There are countless processes and materials that cycle through to keep life cycles on Earth going. Is there one material that is the bottleneck, the thing that limits populations and growth? Surprisingly, there is a "supreme ruler" that if diminished slows all life down, no matter what the availability of other chemicals is. That bottleneck chemical is phosphorus. According to _The Thirteenth Element: The Sordid Tale of Murder, Fire, and Phosphorus_ (John Wiley & Sons) by John Emsley, phosphorus is essential for, among other things, being the backbone of DNA and forming the basic chemistry for biological storage and use of energy. It does not get replenished by circulation as the other big four do; carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen all can circulate in the atmosphere or by water. It cannot be "fixed" from the atmosphere into the soil by microbes, as nitrogen can. Phosphorus does have its cycles, but they are slow, like the one that includes it being washed from the soil into the sea, forming part of the sea bed, and then in millions of years being lifted up as rock to form new land. The main land-based cycle is simply from soil to plants to animals and via urine, feces, or decomposition, back to soil again. Cultivation of land means that phosphorus in plants is exported away, and does not get re-deposited into the soil. Crops grown on the same land deplete it of other vital chemicals, but the one that is lost forever without deliberate replacement is phosphorus; this was not known until the nineteenth century. It was found that using bone meal as a fertilizer was effective, but it was originally assumed that the calcium in its calcium phosphate was the cause.
Emsley has good fun describing the ins and outs of phosphorus, but his book is particularly wide-ranging. He explains why the phosphorus in detergents is not really as bad as we once thought. He explains that it has been used as a medicine for centuries, even though it never cured anyone of anything. He tells stories of phosphorus as a poison, used as such successfully by many dissatisfied husbands and wives, some of whom were particularly skillful at the use of the element in this way, having practiced on a succession of spouses. Much of the book is devoted to the nasty properties of phosphorus, such as the horrid disease of "phossy jaw" which afflicted those in the matchmaking trade, or the distressing effects of nerve gas or phosphorous bombs.
So, like so many things, phosphorus is neither good nor bad, but is essential and can be used in many admirable or detestable ways. Emsley takes us through many of them in a wide-ranging book that not only covers the science of his element, but also the social forces in such activities as the advertising of matches and the social reforms which improved the safety of the matchmakers. He has many previous credits as a science writer, and clearly and vividly describes the history and both the dramatic and quotidian effects of an essential, ubiquitous, and dangerous element.

From Booklist
London may hope that his sound history of the war with the Barbary pirates, published in time for the 2005 bicentennial of the conflict, will inspire readers to support new efforts in the war on terrorism. At any rate, he gives us a thoroughly readable history of a prolonged crisis in American foreign and naval policy that arose when the U.S. became independent from Great Britain and commerce that had been colonial was no longer sheltered by a mother country's large navy. To cope with the seizing of American ships and the ransoming of American sailors who were held under often barbaric conditions, the U.S. revived its navy and sent it into action off the shores of Tripoli. A cheap or unqualified victory wasn't achieved, but a useful precedent was set for armed resistance to international extortion. Moreover, the U.S. made a permanent commitment to maintaining a navy. London also gives full credit for valiant effort to Consul William Eaton, who marched across the desert to press the pirates by land. Roland Green

From the Inside Flap
As a new century dawned, a newly elected U.S. president was forced to confront a grave threat to the nation—an escalating series of unprovoked attacks on Americans by Muslim terrorists sworn to carry out jihad against all Western powers. Worse still, these fanatics operated under the protection and sponsorship of rogue states ruled by ruthless and cunning dictators. As timely and familiar as these events may seem, they occurred more than two centuries ago. The president was Thomas Jefferson, and the terrorists were the Barbary pirates of Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli.

Victory in Tripoli recounts the untold story of one of the defining challenges overcome by the young U.S. republic. This fast-moving and dramatic tale examines the events that gave birth to the Navy and the Marines, recounting the harrowing experiences of U.S. seamen held as slaves in North Africa for more than a decade and re-creating the startling political, diplomatic, and military battles that were central to the conflict.

The story begins with humiliation: a U.S. warship—the first ever in the Mediterranean Sea—sailing into the harbor of Algiers to pay protection money to Algerine ruler Dey Bobba Mustafa. This custom of paying pirates not to attack merchant vessels, long practiced by the European powers, rankled the ship's captain, William Bainbridge, as well as U.S. consuls Richard O'Brien and William Eaton. Over the next five years, these men, along with a handful of others, would do everything in their power to end this policy of appeasement and bring U.S. power to bear against the Barbary pirates.

Standing alone against the pirates, the United States resorted to naval blockades, covert operations and night raids, amphibious assaults, brute force, attempted regime change through a coup d'état, employment of mercenary forces, and, finally, the betrayal of a trusted ally in its quest for victory. The young nation would learn valuable lessons in cross-cultural diplomacy, diplomatic maneuvering, and the projection of military might as an extension of public policy.

Victory in Tripoli examines every aspect of the first U.S. military campaign through foreign lands—from the spectacular naval heroics of the legendary Stephen Decatur to Eaton's perilous march across the Sahara, from Jefferson's flip-flopping on the use of force to petty squabbles among diplomats that produced dire consequences for the United States. This highly interesting and informative history offers deep insight into issues that remain fundamental to U.S. foreign policy decisions to this day.

From the Back Cover
"This is a tale of piracy, heroism, disaster, triumph, and American exceptionalism. A wonderful story, filling a gap in the history of the early republic. A terrific book!"
—Bernard Cornwell, New York Times bestselling author of Sharpe's Havoc

"Insightful and entertaining, Victory in Tripoli is an absolutely fascinating story, wonderfully told. Anyone with even a passing interest in naval history, or U.S. history in general, should read this book."
—Admiral William J. Crowe Jr., USN (Ret.), former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

"Victory in Tripoli deftly captures the dangers of covert operations, the complexity of international diplomacy, and the thrills and horrors of battle. Joshua E. London's exciting and insightful look at one of America's earliest and seldom remembered foreign escapades offers much for the keen observer of current events."
—Charles T. Pinck, president of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) Society

"History shall tell that the United States first volunteered a ship of war, equipped, a carrier for a pirate. . . . Frankly I own, I would have lost the peace and been impaled myself rather than yield such a concession. Will nothing rouse my country!"
—William Eaton, in a letter to the secretary of state, 1800

Giving money, arms, and a warship to a pirate who has attacked our merchant vessels and taken U.S. sailors as slaves? William Eaton, United States consul to Tunis, was furious. Eaton, however, was not a man given to impotent rage. He was intent on ending the custom of paying protection money to the Barbary pirates of Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli. His plan: to reverse the roles of diplomacy in the region by taking the fight straight to the piratical regimes.

Over the next five years, the fledgling U.S. Navy would develop into a formidable force as it employed blockades, covert operations, amphibious assaults, brute force, and even mercenaries to make the Mediterranean safe for U.S. merchant ships. Victory in Tripoli tells the inspiring story of how Eaton and a few other determined Americans forced their young nation to stand up to terrorism. It is an eerily familiar tale whose lessons remain central to U.S. foreign policy to this day.

"To the Shores of Tripoli..." Semper Fi and God Bless America!
By BOB HUDECK
I saw the author give a lecture on this book last week at the Navy Museum in the Washington Navy Yard here in DC, and was impressed enough to buy the book and get it autographed - his handwriting is terrible. Fortunately, he speaks very well and is engaging, insightful and entertaining. I began reading the book that evening, and finished it within a couple of days (it is a fairly quick read). Thankfully, he writes as well as he speaks.

"Victory in Tripoli" is an amazingly good and compact book! History just dances off its pages. Strikingly, the author runs us through America's complex and confused diplomatic efforts in North Africa back then with some terrific detail and really admirable clarity and pacing.

There are many lessons to be had from this rich and worthwhile book. Here are just a few I teased out for myself.

One of the big things that I took away from this book is that our interaction with the Arabs hasn't changed all that much in 200 years. The same can be said for the behavior and attitudes of the Arabs towards us. Another big lesson I took from this book is that winning is important, there really is no substitute for victory. Clearly, there are times when one simply has to win to achieve peace, rather than endeavor to negotiate away "grievances" or "misunderstandings." Another big lesson for me from all this is that the religious dimension in the Middle East is substantive, and sometimes trumps more mundane interests like money and politics.

Another lesson I teased out of the book is that U.S. foreign policy is at its best when it sticks to its moral and philosophical principles and at its worst when it sacrifices these for realpolitik or in the name of political expediency. Another lesson that seems clear to me is that the United States is a fundamentally different sort of Nation, in virtually every worthwhile respect, from the nations of (Old World) Europe, and that America is at its best on the world's stage when it forges its own path, on its own terms.

Another aspect of this book that is worth mentioning is that the author does a most skillful job of painting clear, dramatic, and meaningful portraits of some of the key figures in this history. These include Thomas Jefferson, Pasha Yusuf Qaramanli and his brother Ahmad, William Eaton, Richard O'Brien, James Cathcart, Capt. William Bainbridge, Commodore Edward Preble, Captain Stephen Decatur, Jr., Marine Lt. Presley Neville O'Bannon, and several others.

Also, the action sequences are brisk and wonderfully handled. And throughout the writing style is clear, intelligent, and almost completely unobtrusive. In most every respect, "Victory in Tripoli" is a real pleasure to read.

My only "complaints" with this book are that (1) I would have preferred a clearer and more detailed map of the region and the principle harbors, and (2) I would have liked a little more detail on the French decision to invade Algiers in 1830 (this is obviously outside the scope of the author's focus, but a little more detail would still have been welcome). Also, (3) I would have liked some photographs of the USS Constitution that the author said in his lecture was still afloat and, I think, open for visitors in Boston. Finally, (4) I would have liked there to be a bit more detail on some of the other Marines involved in Eaton's march across the desert. None of these are serious problems, and I only thought of them while sitting down to write this, but I think it would have made the book even better.

As it stands, Mr. Joshua E. London has given us a wonderful history of America's wars with the Barbary Pirates, and one that will likely stand the test of time.

This would make a great Christmas gift to anyone interested in American history or to anyone interested in furthering their understanding of America's interaction with the Muslim world both then and now.

THE FIRST WAR ON TERROR:
By Orrin C. Judd
If you're anything like me the extent of your knowledge about the Barbary War is that Jefferson fought it and that it's commemorated in the Marine hymn: "...to the shores of Tripoli." Here though, presented in immensely readable fashion, is a history of what turn out to have been America's Barbary Wars, not just one war. Indeed, the fact that a subsequent war was required is just one of the ways that Joshua E. London ties the events of two hundred years ago, and of our first encounter with the Islamic world, into the events going on around us today. The parallels he draws help us both to understand the successes and failures of strategy in our own time and to relate better to our distant ancestors as they experience many of the same.

Though we refer to them as pirates, Mr. London shows that we might better think of the Barbary raiders as state-sponsored terrorists. Acting on behalf of the rulers of Tripoli, Tunis, and Algiers, they would harass Mediterranean shipping and capture boats and crews. Ships were converted to the state's use and crewmen essentially enslaved or both were held for ransom. The European nations had settled into an acceptance of this sort of outrage and paid regular tribute or protection money, but the young American nation, once it lost Britain's protection, could neither easily afford such payments nor abide by their moral taint. And so, especially under President Jefferson, the United States decided to pursue a unilateral policy of resisting the Barbary states, even to the point of attempted regime change. All that sounds familiar enough and redounds to our credit. However, this is also a story of bureaucratic turf wars and infighting, of feckless leaders, of a policy only haphazardly applied, and, in the most haunting parallel of all, of how the regime change was stopped just when it was about to work, thereby requiring a second, and definitive, war later under Jefferson's successor and political heir, James Madison.

The tragic figure who holds this tale together is William Eaton--a Captain in the Revolutionary War and later consul to Tunis--who pushes throughout for a sterner American response to Barbary provocations. In response to an early humiliation--when the U.S.S. George Washington was forced by Dey Bobba Mustafa to transport an embassy to Constantinople under the Algerine flag in October, 1800--he wrote:

"Genius of My country! How art thou prostrate! Hast thou not yet one son whose soul revolts, whose nerves convulse, blood vessels burst, and heart indignant swells at thought of such debasement?

Shade of Washington! Behold thy orphan'd sword hang on a slave--A voluntary slave, and serve a Pirate!....Shall Tunis also lift his thievish arm, smite our scarred cheek, then bid us kiss the rod! This is the price of peace! But if we will have peace at such a price, recall me, and send a slave, accustomed to abasement, to represent the nation.... History shall tell that the United States first volunteered a ship of war, equipped, a carrier for a pirate. ... Frankly I own, I would have lost the peace, and been impaled myself rather than yielded this concession. Will nothing rouse my country!"

Eaton was to be more fortunate than the modern counterpart he eerily summons up: John O'Neill, FBI agent John O'Neill, whose warnings about al Qaeda went for nought and who perished in the WTC on 9-11, having just taken over as head of security there. Eaton did get to see his nation heed his warnings and returned home a hero after the first Barbary War. But the mission he led, to recruit Ahmad Qaramanli for a revolt against his brother, the Tripolitine leader, Pasha Yusuf Qaramanli, was abandoned just as it seemed about to succeed in the first American-led regime change. He managed to rescue Ahmad and remained his friend for years, but was left embittered by the experience, took to drink, and died a broken man in 1811. This makes his legacy all the more poignant:

"During the war with Tripoli, the United States began to test William Eaton's hypothesis that fighting back and protecting the national honor and the national interest with force was the best way to end Barbary piracy. Just at the moment of triumph, however, President Thomas Jefferson wavered and settled on the side of expediency. Jefferson's lack of resolve left American interests unguarded, and once again, American trade felt the Barbary terror. By 1816, however, the United States finally proved that William Eaton was right. This success ignited the imagination of the Old World powers to rise up against the Barbary pirates.

In late August 1816, a combined British and Dutch fleet under the command of Lord Exmouth (formerly Sir Edward Pellew) followed the example of Commodore Stephen Decatur, forcing a peace at the mouth of a cannon. This armada unleashed hell upon Algiers, destroying most of the coastal side of the city, as well as most of its navy and marina. The dey accepted all of Lord Exmouth's demands. More than eleven hundred Christian captives were released from slavery, and the dey agreed to abolish Christian slavery in Algiers forever."

Nice to be right, but best to live to see it.

The degree to which the war(s) connects to our own times necessarily suggests that we apply its lessons today. This seems all the more important when we recall that almost all of our other wars follow the pattern: only reluctantly entered into and then left unfinished. It's too late for us to start the War on Terror on our own initiative--9/11 saw to that. But we can, just this once, refuse to let up in the war until it's truly won. In this instance that will mean getting liberal democratic reform going in every single Middle Eastern state and denying al Qaeda the safe havens it still enjoys in Western Pakistan. Let's not leave another William Eaton to be proved right in retrospect.

AN EXCELLENT HISTORY
By Rudy
"Victory in Tripoli" is an compelling account of the new American nation's first foreign adventure. This book is an excellent history of the United States first foreign military campaign, and a valuable contribution to the understanding of America's early history. Mr. London has captured the drama and adventure of this period and the personalities that shaped it.

Mr. London deserves kudos not only for so convincingly presenting his case but making such a good read out of it. London is a skilled writer, an excellent historian and a good storyteller. "Victory in Tripoli" is a compelling story of the birth of America and how it projected its power abroad for the first time. One hopes that "Victory in Tripoli" will become one of the definitive sources on this topic.

Highly recommended.

Edison in the Boardroom: How Leading Companies Realize Value from Their Intellectual Assets, by Julie L. Davis, Suzanne S. Harrison

Julie L. Davis and Suzanne Harrison

Today's corporations are always on the lookout for exciting new and innovative ideas that can be used to generate revenue. Up until recently, this meant taking these ideas and turning them into products or services, which could then be sold for profit. But today, a unique new concept is revolutionizing the way companies are getting value from ideas. Instead of incorporating them into products or services, today's innovations may be bartered, licensed or sold in the "idea" stage for tremendous amounts of money. For example, IBM currently receives well over $1 billion in revenue every year from licensing its intellectual property, unrelated to the manufacture of a single product. Today more and more companies are adopting this idea of turning their legal departments, where intellectual property is housed, from cost centers into profit centers.

Edison in the Boardroom: How Leading Companies Realize Value from Their Intellectual Assets takes an in-depth look at the revolutionary concept of Intellectual asset management (IAM). IAM is changing the way companies all over the world are doing business. In their careers as business consultants, the authors have been privileged to meet individuals who were clearly ahead of their time when it came to realizing value from their companies' innovations. Based on their interactions with the ICM Gathering--an international group of companies who meet several times a year to create, define and benchmark best practices in the area of IAM--the authors have compiled a wealth of knowledge and successful stories that illustrate how far businesses have come in their ability to leverage and monetize their intellectual assets.

Incorporating stories and teachings from some of the most successful companies in the worlds -- such as Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Procter & Gamble, Rockwell, Dow, Ford and many others -- the authors have made an exhaustive study of IAM and its implications for today's businesses. They have culled a hierarchy of best practices that today's companies can integrate into their own business philosophies to gain the best return from their intellectual assets.

Comprehensive
By Robert L. Cantrell
Julie Davis and Suzanne Harrison's book, Edison in the Boardroom, takes readers deep enough into the field of intellectual property management for them to incorporate presented theories into their respective professional disciplines - researcher, attorney, licensing exec, etc. - without the book becoming unwieldy. Excellent balance. This book can become a cornerstone text for any professional involved with intellectual property to direct his or her focus for additional study and to ensure his or her working knowledge of the challenges confronting professionals in other disciplines that together form a corporate intellectual property management program.

Convincing the skeptics
By A Customer
Professor Thomas G. Field, Jr., Franklin Pierce Law Center
Few variables are more likely to dictate short- and long-term commercial success than a firm's ability to convert intellectual assets into intellectual property (IP). The smaller the firm, the bigger the need, and the need only grows.
Most companies are careful to avoid IP infringement and are eager to sue direct competitors who do not. Many firms also educate key employees on their roles in perfecting and protecting intangible assets. Fewer give full attention to IP and antecedents that might nevertheless be regarded as assets. For example, those who would not hesitate to monitor and sue infringing competitors may not monitor non-competitors as potential licensees.
To extract the most from intellectual assets, many factors, e.g., legal, technical marketing and sales, must be weighed. Edison in the Boardroom offers important advice to help firms take steps to meet that need. Despite its reference to "assets" in the subtitle, however, most of this book focuses more narrowly - on IP, and on patents specifically.
Davis and Harrison, said to bring "a quarter century of IP consulting accomplishments between them," document that some companies have long engaged in trying to optimize the value of their intellectual assets. The authors also assign companies to a five-level hierarchy based on a range of IP-management strategies. A goldmining metaphor is usefully advanced at one point to describe those levels as: defensive (staking claims), panning (cost control), mining (deeper profit seeking), processing (integration), and sculpting. The heart of the book consists of five chapters that discuss these levels seriatim and offers a host of useful ideas and anecdotes.
The book is generally well-structured. For example, early in each of the five core chapters is a description of what "companies are trying to accomplish" at the corresponding level of IP-management sophistication. At the defensive level, of course, companies have processes for seeking, maintaining and enforcing IP. Yet, in the discussion of second-level companies, said to seek to reduce costs by exercising judgment about what is brought into and kept in their patent portfolios, it becomes clear how much various levels overlap. The first two topics may usefully be segregated for purposes of discussion, but it is hard to imagine any company that can afford, literally, to pursue protection without attempting to balance portfolio goals against concomitant costs. Indeed, one thesis of the second chapter is that no firm can seek the strongest protection for everything of potential patentability, much less seek it in every possible country.
The third chapter diverges considerably. Companies featured there are said to seek, e.g., to extract portfolio value as quickly and cheaply as possible. Several have gone well beyond suing competitors or easily discovered, non-competing infringers. The most aggressive of such firms regard IP departments as profit centers and actively solicit licensees. Their success is sometimes remarkable. As the authors point out, "Worldwide revenues from patent licensing have grown from $15 billion in 1990 to over $100 billion in 2000." Echoing the central theme of another recent book, Davis and Harrison also point out that, "Some experts estimate that companies are sitting on $1 trillion per year in unexploited licensing fees."
Fourth- and fifth-level firms are difficult to distinguish from ones discussed earlier - or from each other. For example, level-four companies are said to seek to integrate "IP awareness and operations throughout all functions of the company." That seems necessary, too, for allegedly less capable compatriots. Further, when level-five firms are described as embedding intellectual assets and their management into the company culture, it is difficult to find divergence.
The last are said to have as additional objectives: (1) staking a claim on the future and (2) encouraging "disruptive technologies." Still, these could easily been collapsed into "Get a Crystal Ball!" Heuristics for meeting them non-serendipitiously are weak.
Consider, for example, the mouse and graphic interface as commercialized on Macintosh computers. Steve Jobs is said to have derived both from the Alto computer developed by Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center. While Jobs became a billionaire, "Xerox completely failed to get into the personal computer business, missing one of the biggest business opportunities in history." To avoid repeating such mistakes, Davis and Harrison suggest that companies should "identify ways the corporation can benefit from [ideas outside their business capacity] before moving on." They, not surprisingly, can offer little guidance.
One IP attorney recently stressed the need for his colleagues better to understand the identification, protection and use of intellectual capital "effectively to address strategic corporate objectives." Those for whom this is novel terrrain will find Edison in the Boardroom helpful.
Also, senior IP counsel better acquainted with the topic may find the book useful. Some will face difficulty in convincing those at the same level or higher in the corporate hierarchy of its importance. To the extent that their advocacy of the critical role to be played by IP counsel is perceived as serving selfish aims, the book should help allay suspicions.
For these and other attorneys, the value of Edison in the Boardroom could easily, and vastly, exceed its modest price.

Visionary and Innovative Pragmatism
By Robert Morris
The basic concept of this book is very intriguing: Briefly examine the life and career of Thomas Edison and then suggest direct correlations between his achievements with real-world situations in which various companies are now deriving substantial value from their intellectual capital. The authors also make skillful use of Edison's own recorded thoughts and feelings. Of special interest to me was what he had to say about the creative process. For example, "Men are just beginning to propose questions and find answers, and we may be sure that no matter what question we ask, so long as it is not against the laws of nature, a solution can be found." This what the author refer to as "The Edison Mindset." Edison apparently had almost no concern about a given experiment's "failure" which he continued to view, rather, as non-success to that stage. Too often, senior-level executives become preoccupied with results and neglect the process by which they can be achieved. Among Edison's greatest (and perhaps least appreciated) achievements was the establishment of the first research laboratory in which he and his associates would collaborate on various projects. Edison was a pioneer in recognizing the importance of assembling the best available talent and providing them with sufficient resources as well as a culture wherein those talents could be fully utilized. Davis and Harrison obviously have this point in mind when observing that "benchmarking best practices without any regard for the underlying culture of the firm can be problematic."
NOTE: For those interested in this subject, I highly recommend Organizing Genius in which Bennis and Biederman examine the collaborative efforts of those involved at the Disney studios which produced so many animation classics; at Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) which developed the first personal computer; at Apple Computer which then took it to market; at the so-called "War Room" which helped to elect Bill Clinton President in 1992; those active in the so-called "Skunk Works" where so many of Lockheed's greatest designs were formulated; at Black Mountain College which "wasn't simply a place where creative collaboration took place. It was about creative collaboration"; and at Los Alamos (NM) and the University of Chicago where the Manhattan Project eventually produced a new weapon called "the Gadget."
This is an extremely well-organized and well-written book in which Davis and Harrison use the life and career of Edison for guidance to understanding subjects of major importance today such as breakthrough innovation, collaborative effort, the development and management of intellectual property, and effective organizational transformation. They suggest that companies (indeed all organizations) function in one or more of five levels which comprise "the hierarchy of value" for intellectual property, a model created at Andersen's Intellectual Property Management Practice and then at ICMG:
1. Defensive: "If a corporation owns an intellectual asset (such as a great business concept), it can prevent competitors from using the asset."
2. Cost Control: "Companies focus on how to reduce the costs of filing and maintaining their IP portfolios."
3. Profit Center: "Having learned how to control many of their patent-related costs, companies at this level turn their attention to more proactive strategies that can generate millions of dollars of additional revenues while further continuing to trim costs.'
4. Integrated Level: In this level the IP function ceases to focus on self-centered activities and reaches outwardly beyond its own department to serve a greater purpose within the organization as a whole."
5. Visionary Level: "Few companies have reached this level of looking outside the company and into the future. In this level, the IP function, having already become deeply ingrained in the company, takes on the challenge of identifying future trends in the industry and consumer preferences."
After an excellent Introduction, the authors devote a separate chapter to each of the five Levels and then provide a case study of the Dow Chemical Company, followed by three appendices: Mining a Portfolio for Value, Competitive Assessment, and Integrated Performance Reporting. They suggest all manner of similarities and differences between and among these five Levels, in process suggesting also a wealth of strategies and tactics to consider when attempting to achieve the desired results at any of these Levels.
To a greater extent now than at any prior time in human history, with all due respect to major developments such as the light bulb, telephone, automobile, and personal computer, corporations (indeed entire societies) seek "exciting, new, novel, and discontinuous innovations....For centuries, companies have linked ideas and money by embedding their new ideas (legally protected or not) into products to be sold or bartered. Today, however, an exciting new concept is revolutionizing the way companies extract value from their ideas: an idea no longer needs to be embedded into a product or service to create value. Today ideas are licensed, sold, or bartered in their raw state for great value." And they are getting that value through intellectual property management (IPM). Hence the importance of encouraging and supporting "The Edison Mindset."
Here in a single volume, the authors provide a comprehensive, cohesive, and cost-effective program. It remains for decision-makers in any organization now considering or at work on the design of an IPM to select whatever material in the book is most appropriate to their organization's specific needs. One value-added benefit of this book is that Davis and Harrison can assist with that selection process. A point made earlier, however, deserves repeating: "benchmarking best practices without any regard for the underlying culture of the firm can be problematic."

Review
"…a detailed yet readable introduction to concurrency and distributed computing." (Computing Reviews.com, April 9, 2004)

"...well-written and accurate...a good book for anyone who'd like hands-on training in the concepts of concurrent and distributed systems." (IEEE Distributed Systems Online, November 2004)

Review
Vijay K. Garg introduces concepts, models and algorithms suited to distributed computing and presents them in Java. This way, the reader can see that these algorithms can be effectively implemented (and that there is no "hidden mystery" within the model or the algorithms). The approach used by the author is very appealing as it demystifies concepts that could be considered "too theoretical" to be useful. This book successfully takes up the challenge to nicely merge theory and practice. It can consequently benefit both communities. I stronlgy recommend the book to people interested in the design and implementation of distributed systems.
--Michel Raynal, Professor, University of Rennes, France.

A book for research purposes, not practicality
By Sage
When I bought this book, it was because I was taking a class with the author, Dr. Garg. I'm a Java programmer and have done a lot of multi-threaded and distributed programming and was hoping that both this book and the class would have more life-practical content. Instead, the contents of both the book and the class is nearly pure theory. Yes, the ideas contained inside are used in the constructs applied in real-world computing. However, all of these ideas and theories and the discussion about them are only relevant to those interested in formal research of these topics (Master's theses and PhDs etc.). If you're looking for a book of actual practicality, move on from this one

Disappointing
By Andy
I bought this book a couple of years ago now. Although it has some interesting discussion of distributed algorithms its big let-down is the abysmal Java code that it contains. I cannot believe for one moment that any of this compiles, let alone works - it all generally looks like pseduo-code written for the purposes of illustration rather being of any practical value.

Likewise I didn't find the material particularly helpfully structured or consistent in its level of detail. I would have liked to see more quantitive analysis of the suitability of different algorithms in practical applications and broader coverage of well-known distributed algorithms (for instance paxos and virtual synchrony are conspicuous in their absence).

This is almost verbatim copy of other book by the same author, but with pseudocode replaced by Java. Rather poor Java, nonprofessional and hard to read Java. Using Java instead pseudocode doesn't convert the original theoretical book into one that is easier for practitioners. There is nothing directly practical in this book.

If you want to study distributed systems, don't buy this book. Buy other book by the same autor - this other book (Elements of Distributed Computing) is highly recommended
