Designed for high school students

Nice book for high school students, or people who have no clue on how to right a research paper.Great chapter on how to take notes, how to do research, with some excellent ideas given. There is a detailed section on how to write an outline, which is also helpful. The Appendix has a great example of a Research paper , and a schedule form that to keep track of what has been accomplished. . However, the book completely misses the mark when it come to citing sources and using the different style. For this reason I didn't give the book 5 stars.

Bad edition of a useful book...

If you are an instructor avoid this book. I have used older editions of this book because they have been easy for students to understand. With the eighth edition I have had to pass out lists of corrections and mistakes in the book. They are nothing major, but often confuse students.

very pleased

This textbook was selected for me to use in teaching statistics to undergraduates. I've just finished reading it and I am, on the whole, very pleased. It is much easier to understand than any of the statistics texts I used in upper division courses or graduate school. It is straight forward and concise yet has a fairly conversational style. The only downside is the need for text corrections (about ½ a page worth) but these are available from the book's companion website and can be handed out the first day of class to avoid student frustration.

a competent textbook

My intermediate statistics professor is convinced that this is "the best intro stats textbook out there," but I'm not so sure. It's quite competent, yes, but some of the details are a little funky. For instance, the chapter on correlation precedes the discussion of power, so there is no mention in the book of appropriate sample sizes for a correlational study. Also, the ninth edition has very few substantive changes from the eighth. There are a few subtle differences in, for instance, the numbers used in examples and questions. On the other hand, there is a random number table and a good discussion of how to use it, and the z, t, and F tables are set up well and their use is explained clearly. As a student, I wish that there were pages of formulas, but I suppose making my own is a learning experience. If you are looking for a statistics text that incorporates PASW (SPSS), this book is not for you. There is mention that the software exists, but that's it. It sounds as though I really dislike this textbook, but I don't. The language is clear and the examples are appropriate and interesting, which is more than I can say for some statistics textbooks! The explanation of the sampling distribution is particularly skillful.

An excellent primer that is concise and to the point

Unlike most books on starting a private practice, Getting Started in Private Practice, doesn't waste time with nonsensical fluff on whether one should be in private practice and other "touchy feely" irrelevancies. The authors presume you are reading the book because you have already decided private practice is for you and takes off from there.

The book is concise and straightforward with information on the financial and legal aspects of starting and running a private practice. Whereas other books tend to focus on complaining about managed care, this books tells you how to effectively deal with it from a business stand point. Whereas other books delve into "getting in touch" with your business self, this book tells you what it takes to actually run a business.

The only complaint I have is that some areas are only glossed over and not enough detail is provided; however, that information can easily be obtained from other generalist business books.

Overall an excellent starting point and reference for starting a private practice in mental health. Highly recommended.

I bought three other guides to starting a private practice and this one outshines them all. Everything I needed and nothing I didn't. The information about setting fees was specific and very helpful, unlike many other books that give only a very general overview. Even the small things like business cards and stationary were discussed. Marketing ideas were great as well.

I found this book to be useful & helpful. It is well organized, relevant (as many books on this subject seem out-dated)& concise. I liked the specific examples/scenarios & appendix with forms. I highly recommend this for anyone starting out needing the basic information.

A book for Advanced Engineers

As a student of the author, in which the book is used in a grad level engineering school, this book summarizes all that is learned in an under grad engineering college. Many mathematical aspects are considered from simple algebraic logic to advanced Fourier transforms. This book covers it all. In summary, this book is great to own if you are interested in combining all what is learned in mathematics to solve complex problems.

A really good book for engineers

This book is a real gem for engineers that want a good starting place for learning modern advanced mathematics. I have read the whole book and found it both fascinating and informative. The exposition is exemplary. It is also concise, which aids comprehension. The print and layout are very nice as well. One of the strengths of this book is the way in which the authors do something that many others fail to do: they show all the steps needed to get from A to B. There are other books on the topic of advanced modern mathematics but I would suggest that one would not go wrong by starting with this book first.

Oberman earned his Phd at Stanford University and is currently manager of VLSI Design at Nishan Systems, San Jose, California. He previously worked at AMD, where he was the architect of the Athlon floating-point unit. His research interests include new algorithms for high-speed computer arithmetic, high-speed switch-fabric design, and architectures for high-throughput network processors.

It All DependsOn What You Want

If you're a researcher in the field, or if all you do is design high-performance airthmetic circuits, it's probably a good book to have. But if you have a specific job to do, like implementing a "mundane" radix-2 SRT divider, this isn't the book for you. As another reviewer said (and I should have listened) the authors simply leave out far too many details. Keep looking ... there are better books out there!

Too many missing details

The content of this book is very disappointing. Too many details are missing. In many cases, the authors describe implementations without getting into the details of how they reached it. Because of these missing details, it is hard to understand the reasonning behind some of the trade-offs described in the book. It lacks clarity in several areas. Even with some experience in the area, I was left too many times trying to figure out what the authors meant.
