Ken Black is currently Professor of Decision Sciences in the School of Business and Public Administration at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts and raised in Missouri, he earned a Bachelor's degree in mathematics from Graceland College, a Master's degree in math education from the University of Texas at El Paso, a Ph.S. in business administration in management science, and a Ph.S. in educational research from the University of North Texas.

Since joining the faculty in 1979, Professor Black has taught all levels of statistics courses, forecasting, management science, market research ,and production/operations management. he has publisher fifteen journal articles and over twenty professional papers, as well as two textbooks: Business Statistics: An Introductory Course and Business Statistics: Contemporary Decision Making. Black has consulted for many different companies, including Aetna, City of Houston, NYLCare, AT&T, Johnson Space Center, Southwest Information Resources, Connect Corporation, and Eagle Engineering.

Ken Black and his wife Carolyn have two daughters, Caycee and Wendi. His hobbies include playing the guitar, reading, traveling,and participating in Master's track and field as a long jumper.

Delivers On Its Title

I found this book particularly well done and interesting in two aspects. First, I was impressed that this was truly a book for the African American and for the "Black Enterprise" population internationally. So much research is incorporated, without making it hard to read. I felt I had a much better understanding of the needs as well as the contributions of that population after reading the book.

Secondly, this was a great practical book on technology and how to use it to further a business. I am not a tech person, but I had no trouble understanding any of it, and I learned a lot I didn't know about how to use technology in ways that will enhance the profit potential of my business. I particularly liked the chapter on Improving Your Company's Internet ROI which covers planning for your site step-by-step.
There are also over 20 pages of web sites of interest to African American entrepreneurs, and the numerous appendices including a tremendous glossary are worth the price of the book alone.

Dont buy it if you are not in the trade or profession

I am not saying this is not a good book. In fact, this is by far the best I had come across on Convertible Arbitrage. It's so informative and well written that it should be a handbook for hedge fund professionals or finance professors. However, it's far beyond the comprehension of the investment public who would surely be confused by the vast amount of greek alphabets, financial equations and graphs. Of course, for those affluent readers (time- and money-wise) who want to learn, say, Bearish Tilt Gamma Convertible Hedge, Vega Hedge thru Volatility Swap etc. despite the technicalities and scale issues facing individual investors, it's definitely not a bad bet.

Not the best book

To successfully employ convertible arbitrage, you need to value convertible bonds (CBs) correctly to be able to find underpriced CBs to buy, and then you need to know the number (delta) of stocks to short sell to hedge your position. How do you do this? The book correctly tells you that a binomial method must be used, but it spends only 10 pages or so on this matter! And even if you are proficient with binomial valuation, this description is quite poor and confusing. Most important though, the book does NOT cover the more complex attributes of convertible bonds (such as call and put provisions) that are very common. How can you expect to find underpriced CBs if you don't value them properly? If you truly want to learn convertible arbitrage, I instead recommend the book "Pricing convertible bonds" by Kevin Connolly who carefully explains all the things you need to know about the valuation of CBs, so that even if you have never heard about binomial trees you will still understand it (he also supplies a disc with excel files).

good but cryptic

i studied from this book for the CAIA exam. while it presented some very fascinating approaches and ideas for me, keeping in mind i am not a practising arbitrageur yet, it was very poorly edited and written in general.

every book starts with an assumption about the level of sophistication the reader. this book seems to assume different levels in different chapters and even paragraphs. the chapter on equity valuation is written for kids (lose the chapter, nick) and the ones on hedging techniques doesn't even bother to list assumptions behind complex positions.

the author uses the most confusing notations. e.g. Nu-1, literally typed out like that, which is supposed to represent a variable with subscript u-1. geez - whatever happened to computer typesettng with actual subscripts, and why use the same notation for different variables in different formulae? at least he could have used Nu-1 and Mu-1. I spent a lot of time making sense out of this one and assumed he was referring to Nu minus 1!

basically, if the same ideas were carefully thought out and presented by better editing and writing (and typesetting!), this would be an enjoyable book. as it stands, its a torture to go through. such wonderful ideas and such poor presentation. this one went out the door too early.

A Wonderful History of a Great Business

The impact that a corner drug store can have on America is simply astonishing. Anyone interested in the last hundred years of American history will love the book. There are also plenty of valuable business lessons to be found within the pages. A great read, John Bacon does a great job of bringing to life one of the most storied retail enterprises in the history of business.

Great book on a surprisingly abosrbing subject!

John Bacon's AMERICA'S CORNER STORE is a world-class story about a world-class business and the businessmen and women behind it. It is one of those histories that goes well beyond the subject at hand to paint a picture across a huge canvas of American history and does so with great attention to detail and the ability to bring its characters and settings to life. It reminded me in some ways of SEABISCUIT---both are stories about subjects that wouldn't normally grab my attention. But because of the writer's skill, this book is also a must-read---if for nothing more than the wonderfull little facts you learn along the way: that the milk shake was invented at Walgreen's; that the Walgreen chain understood that excellent customer service begins with excellent employee-relations decades BEFORE the age of CRM! Bacon is the author of a terrific history of University of Michigan hockey program, BLUE ICE, and this is a great follow up to that book. Read them and see if you don't agree!

Well written book

My father worked for Walgreen's for 17 years, after starting and selling two of his own pharmacies. My son has Wag's stock. We frequent one of my medium sized Midwestern city's three Walgreen stores. Bacon has done a very good job with this book. He extolls the virtues that have made Walgreen's successful for over 110 years now. Some of the names mentioned I have heard from my Dad. Being raised in suburban Chicago Walgreen's stores were also quite numerous. Truth be told, my father's first pharmacy is now the site of a Wag's branch. Dad even says that he is able to live comfortably in retirement from his Wag's profit sharing. The book almost seems as if it could be pro Wag's propaganda. Seldom is heard a discouraging word, but Bacon does back up his glowing review of the firm with factual evidence. Basically nothing earth shattering or terribly high tech about the success of Wag's. Treating people well, whether those people are employees or customers, is a major tenet of the Walgreen's story. If you have a relative who worked at Wag's, or if you work there, this book is probably right up your alley. If you work retail or wish to open a retail business, this book might also be of interest to you.

About the Author
DERALD WING SUE, PhD, is Professor of Psychology and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. He is past president of the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues (Division 45 of the American Psychological Association) and one of the most cited multicultural scholars in the United States.

DAVID SUE, PhD, is Professor of Psychology at Western Washington University. He is currently Director of the Psychology Counseling Clinic and has served as Chairperson of the Mental Health Counseling Program for twelve years. He is an associate of the Center of Cross-Cultural Research at Western Washington University.

a mixed bag

This is a controversial and challenging book as the previous reviews attest to. In my opinion, the negative feedback can be partially attributed to the rather overt biases the authors obviously have (rather ironic given the topic of the book). However, for all the faults of the book, the authors do challenge one's beliefs- an important aspect given that the intent of the book is to made future counselors more culturally competant.

Perhaps the authors can eliminate some of the harsh reaction to the book by taking the following steps in preparing the next edition (provided that there is one):

*include other groups- Where is the discussion on individuals from the Indian sub-continent and the Middle East? They have apparently been lumped in with "Asians" though there are significant differences between an individual from Saudi Arabia and one from Taiwan. Given the increased discrimination and hostility towards these groups since 9/11, the silence from the authors is deafening. Also, their discussion of "women" and "gender issues" totally leaves out stereotypes of males. How can one have a dialogue on gender issues if one is only addressing one gender?

*address heterogeneity of African Americans- The authors are quick to note how heterogeneous the Asian American and American Indian/Native Alaskan population is but make no mention of the heterogeneity of African Americans. Why is this?

*avoid loaded language

*make sure that statements that appear as fact have sources and that they are used apporpriately- The lack of sources for bold/controversial statements of "fact" and improperly used sources hurt the credibility of the book (check at random for examples).

*show a little more respect for the heterogeneity and diversity of Euro-Americans- the authors justify this by asking the question: "If you want to understand oppression, should you ask the oppressor or the oppressed?" (p. 239). Hum. Well, OK but how does this perspective help one understand this group's heritage, beliefs, values, and the cultural influence they have? Assuming that the majority of the readers are Euro-American, how does labeling all Whites as racist help this group? Is the blatant disrespect shown this group a good model for how this group should respond to other groups? If individuals from this group are to work through their cultural identity, how does this perspective help them? I recommend that the authors have their Euro-American students read a draft of this chapter for the next edition and then reflectively consider the feedback rather than blowing it off as racism.

While I did feel challenged in some ways by this text, I failed to get what I truly longed for from it- A thoughtful and balanced look at the multicultural issues facing the U.S.

Racist textbook.

I was shocked, deeply saddened and angered to read this book. It's like stepping into the past or onto another planet. Be aware if you are required to read this book for a class. When you read the chapter on White Racial Identity, take note that they refer to whites as White Folks. It's weird, no other ethnic identity is labeled this way. But even more so, the lastest edition basically implies that if you are white, you are racist. I am liberal in my politics but it would take a fool not get the gist of the undercurrent of what is being said here. The chapter itself is even taken from a work in progress by Sue & Sue entitled "You Are a Racist". And they don't mind imposing the very identity crisis or conflict on whites that they admonish absolutelly against doing to other minorities or biracial persons.
For example from page 240:
"First, it is clear that most White folks perceive themselves as unbiased individuals who do not harbor racist thoughts and feelings; they see themselves as working toward social justice and possess a conscious desire to better the life circumstances of those less fortunate than they. While admirable qualitites, this self-image serves as a major barrier to recognizing and taking responsibility for admitting and dealig with one's own prejudices and biases. To admit to being racist, sexist, or homophobic requires people to recognize that the self-images that they hold so dear are based on fase notions of the self"
Huh?? Talk about a double bind! Furthermore, on page 239, they state: "...many White Americans would be hard pressed to describe their Irish, Italian, German, or Norwegian heritage in any but the most superficial manner."
What a slap in the face!! What a step backwards!! Sue and Sue need to look in the mirror at their own arrogance, prejudices and biases. Even more so, they need to take a deep long look at their own racism. It bleeds through the paragraphs of this chapter for all to see whom have the courage to take off the blinders of being brain-washed by this hateful ideology. Even more so, universities and colleges should be ashamed to require this piece for multicultural studies.
