A Fascinating, Realistic Account of Life in the CIA

This is a factual, no nonsense account of what it is really like to work for the CIA. There are no embellishments, no twisting of the truth for entertainment value. This is a true story of one of the "true men", who lived by the rules and who has a rich inventory of experiences from which to draw. This is a perceptive recounting of a life well-lived and the policies and actions - both good and bad - which have shaped our nation's premier intelligence agency.

Pick another book

This was a very disappointing book. The author may have been a fine CIA Operative, but an interesting author he is not. He was not into sharing much detail of "spook" type work. This was more a descriptive political analysis of the countries in which he was assigned and a moralistic soapbox against those agents (rightfully so) that turned into traitors. The book itself was almost void of any specific operations and their analysis.

wide range of results and many typos

Overall, this is a good book, covering many aspects of the fibonacci numbers, however, at about a 100USD, the potential buyer should be warned that there is a lot a typographical errors in the book.

While it is frequent to find a few notation's mistakes in every mathematics book, this one is way over average, most of them fortunately are quite obvious and easy to correct, but, in some cases, it simply makes the demonstration unreadable and the reader is better off working out the proof by himself; luckily, most of the proofs are quite elementary.
For the reader patient enough to go through this book simultaneously reading and correcting it, it definitely is a worthy repository of results involving Fibonacci and Lucas numbers.

In the land of the blind. . .

There's nothing wrong with this book, exactly, but it suffers from being too technical to be a popular book on Fibonacci and too breezy and gimmicky to be a mathematics text. It flits and floats and flies from sub-topic to sub-topic, sometimes visiting the same sub-topic more than once, without discernable pattern. While I have no doubt that that Koshy knows his stuff and his discussion in each sub-chapter is more or less correct, I wish I had a better sense of what's left out.

Fibonacci has always been a dilettante's heaven, and dilettantes need books, like Koshy's could have been, that give them a sense of what's known and what's not. If you're staring into the fire some winter night and suddenly go, Hark!, you need an easy way to decide if your Hark! is worth pursuing, and if so what's already been done. You don't need mathematical rigor, at least not beyond some bare minimum. You need to know if anyone ever bothered to work out a general formula, for general k, for the coefficients of a(0)F(i)^k + a(1)F(i+1)^k + a(2)F(i+2)^k + . . . + a(m)F(i+m)^k = 0. (someone did: see Lewis, More Power to Fibonacci, Mathematics Gazette July 2003.)

A one-volume (affordable) Fibonacci encyclopedia reliably answering the breadth question would be nearly priceless. Koshy's book is not it. You have to buy this book; there's nothing else out there, that I know about, anyway, matching its breadth or depth. And, I suppose Koshy deserves his royalties simply for stepping into the market niche where I was waiting. But there's something missing.

PS. People who know their stuff have warned us about the many typos in this book. I have found a few myself. So, test those Fibonacci identities before you use them, the same way you would test thin ice.

Good reference for Fibonacci and Lucas numbers

The author has collected a lot of facts about these numbers and a decent bibliography. The book can help senior math students (with student projects, capstone papers) as well as professional scholars who need a reference.
Here and there one finds mistakes and typos. For example, the conclusion of Theorem 12.6 on page 159 is wrong - the factor (-1)^n should not be there. The mistake is in the middle of the proof, where erroneously 1-alpha = -beta instead of 1-alpha = beta.

I needed to set up controls to prevent particulate contamination and ESD conditions inside a Class 10K cleanroom. The trick was to avoid making one condition worse as a result of precautions taken to control the other condition. This book was a great help.

During his thirty years of experience in water resources, his publishing credits include Fundamentals of Hydraulic Engineering Systems, Third Edition (with Ned H. C. Hwang) and the Federal Highway Administration’s Hydraulic Design of Highway Culverts, Second Edition (HDS 5) (with Jerome M. Normann and William J. Johnston). For more than fifteen years, he has taught the EPA-SWMM model and the Corps of Engineers’ HEC-HMS model in continuing education classes for ASCE.

The term "small area" denotes any subpopulation for which direct estimates of adequate precision cannot be produced. In recent years, the demand for reliable small area estimates has greatly increased worldwide due to, among other things, their growing use in formulating policies and programs and the allocation of government funds; regional planning; small business decisions; and similar applications.

Small Area Estimation provides a comprehensive account of the methods and theory of small area estimation, particularly indirect estimation based on explicit small area linking models. The model-based approach to small area estimation offers several advantages, including increased precision, the derivation of "optimal" estimates and associated measures of variability under an assumed model, and the validation of models from the sample data.

Expert Advise that is highly readable

I couldn't disagree more with the culinary student. Having been a hospitality manager for 15+ years plus a college instructor for 6 years, I found that Miller's advise is dead-on. The cases presented are real world too. Don't be deceived by the readability of this text. It is solid as a rock. He gives practical advise that you can refer to year after year. If you want empty theory, read someone else. If you want to learn from a master, buy this book. Miller is right when he says that management is an art. Whenever you are dealing with people, you can't turn to a formula. If you want science, go study chemistry. This book is about developing practical organizational and supervisory skills. There's nothing fluffy about it.

Hospitality Supervision Textbook Package

This textbook package contained "Supervision in the Hospitality Industry" 3rd Edition hard cover (ISBN# 0-471-19420-0) and National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation-NRAEF ProMGMT Student Workbook (ISBN# 0471-41305-4). Chapter 9 on performance evaluation was the greatest insight. A great learning tool to help focus my job development within the huge vacation/hospitality employer I work for here in Orlando, Florida.

Enlightening!!

You can be the most organized person in the world and you will still run into difficulties when trying to communicate in an effective manner, recruit, train, evaluate performance, discipline, and delegate all at the same time. For anyone, it's a lot to have on your plate. This book makes it seem simple. It offers way to alleviate some of the frustration that comes with the job.

Great general reference text for land development

After having this textbook in Dion's class 20+ years ago, I find myself still using this book as reference on a regular basis. Not sure of the reviews that state it is dry reading, since it is a textbook, and I use it for reference, I don't really see it as a pleasure read. I haven't seen too many (or any) technical texts that weren't dry. It is frequently borrowed by the other engineers in the office. Great general reference text for land development. Actually looked it up on Amazon, just to see its availability when one of the other engineers said they wished they had a copy of their own.

This book gives a useful overview of the land development process

This book gives a useful overview of the land development process, but its vague on specifics and includes almost no guidance on design. Also, the text is dry, offers few examples, and often doesn't seem to follow the chapter headings. I would pass on this book. There are other books with more detail and that cost significantly less than this one. If you're a student, consider buying a cheap used copy, and then sell it when the class is over. You won't need it much after school.

Decent, but Boring

This book was required for my Civil Engineering senior design class. The book went into a lot of detail and explained a lot about the entire process of land development, but it was also boring. We hated it because we were all Structural and Construction student, not land development. I think an engineer in land development might like this book.
