Thorough and ample preparation

Other reviewers have left their disgust of the book to a basic, if I may summarize, "it doesn't explain anything" carping. Now, of course, it should be understood that textbooks are a supplement to lecturing in a classroom setting, so, it should be without mentioning that learning material like dynamics would be rather difficult without an ample professor leading the way.

With that said, I believe this text is amazing. It is simply one of the better texts I've gone through so far and not simply due to my advantage. My advantage being that my professor was L.G. Kraige, the co-author and future author of the 6th edition (the distinguished Dr. Merian passed away in 2000). Dr. Kraige never went far beyond the text or elaborated any further than what was provided. And rightfully so - if you are not able to pick up some of this material from what you read, it is best that you take a few steps back (maybe back to statics, maybe to physics, maybe to grade school) and start again. Dynamics is a difficult subject to move through without some form of official lecture and having someone offer their own tips and hints is a necessity for your individual success.

The book is thorough and the appendices cover shades of older material that you may not remember fully - I know I had to review mass moments of inertia on several occasions and Appendix B was just enough to get me back on target. The problems for each article are very well formulated and clearly presented. As with many advanced texts, not all of the topics or questions are covered explicitly during the articles, but at this point in the physics/engineering game, it is a must for a student to begin to intuitively solve problems based on the basics that are presented.

Again, this book is wonderful, but needs to be complemented with an ample professor. I was very lucky to have Dr. Kraige as my professor and appreciate the text all the more.

useless text

You'd better hope you've got a good professor for dynamics, because this book is absolutely no help. It gives proofs for most equations, but doesn't seem to think any amount of example problems are necessary. I have the bootleg copy of the solutions manual for this book and the author solves most of the problems with bizarre calculus that isn't discussed in the chapter at all.

To top it off, the set (Statics and Dynamics) was $180 at my college bookstore. Pool your money with your classmates, buy one copy of each, and xerox the problems. You will not miss anything.

Uh, this book sucks

If I could rate it 0 stars, that's what I would give it. I'm a graduate student at UC Berkeley and I was taking an undergrad dynamics course. The book was utterly dense and really confusing. The only good thing about this thing were the pictures.
I'm studying Dynamics as one of my prelim exam topics and I sure as heck am NOT using this book. Try Engineering Dynamics: A Primer by O'Reilly. It's a much better book sans color pictures.
In fact, right after I finish writing this review, I'm selling this book on Amazon Marketplace!
Oh, did I say this book sucked... no, it's great- ---- buy mine!

About the Author

Mohamed Cheriet is Professor in the Department of Automation Engineering at the Ecole de Technologie Superieure of University of Quebec, Montreal. He is the Director of Synchromedia Consortium, working in the fields of image processing, document analysis and recognition, learning algorithms, perception, and intellipresence. Nawwaf Kharma is Associate Professor in the Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering at Concordia University, Montreal. He is Director of the Concordia Computational Intelligence Lab (CeCIL) and a member of the ACM-SIGEVO. ChenG-LIn Liu is a Research Professor and the Deputy Director of the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition (NLPR), Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is working in the fields of pattern recognition, machine learning, and document analysis. Ching Y. Suen is the Director of the Centre for Pattern Recognition and Machine Intelligence of Concordia University in Montreal, working in the fields of handwriting recognition and human-computer communications.

WILLIAM J. LIKOS, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Missouri—Columbia, where he teaches courses in soil mechanics and soil behavior. He is a former geotechnical engineer with the U.S. Geological Survey. He is the author of numerous papers regarding unsaturated and expansive soil behavior, an editorial board member for the Geotechnical Testing Journal, and a member of ASCE and the Clay Minerals Society.

Good Balance of Mechanics and Soil Physics

I am extremely pleased with Unsaturated Soil Mechanics by Lu and Likos. Out of the three major disciplines that study unsaturated soils 1) Soil Physicists, 2) Hydrogeologists, and 3) Civil Engineers; this book has a good balance of the necessary components of Soil Physics (i.e. surface tension, pressure potentials, suction measurements, capillarity) with the topics of interest for the Civil Engineer (i.e. shear strength,suction and earth pressure profiles). I greatly appreciate the chapter summarizing the popular suction and hydraulic models. This book is appropriate for the study of unsaturated soils in a Civil Engineering curriculum. Unsaturated Soils books from an Engineering perspective are not in abundance, and this is a welcome addition with a recent copyright.

I used this book as my graduate level course "Unsaturated Soil Mechanics" in each Fall semester. It is a well written textbook, with the easy concept and model for the unsaturated soil mechanics. It is highly recommended for college student and practical geotechnical engineers.

The Age-Old Kieso Problem

Except for having to buy it new, there are reasons to like the Kieso series including this 13th edition of Intermediate Accounting, which is really Financial Accounting II. These authors have done everything to make the subject progressively more accessible in each edition. I know as I suffered through the courses once too. I have a master's in accounting and am a CPA. It's surprising how many accounting texts assume the student has certain prerequisite skills and knowledge and equally surprising how so many accounting professors want to lecture on what enhances their knowledge base instead of teaching to the student. The Kieso books are really teaching books. I buy used recent editions for myself just for reference since they're so well done and so cheap. Not all CPAs do that but I practice financial accounting.

You'll be lucky if the professor is permissive enough to go with an older series because most students quickly sell these books once the course is over, so used editions are MUCH cheaper. But most professors insist on the most recent edition. I think they're motivated because their authority rests on being up to date. In this 13th edition, there's a big emphasis on International Accounting Standards, and you can be sure the professors want to bone up on this themselves. The financial meltdown has discredited the whole U.S. financial complex, and one result is that the pull is now stronger toward international accounting standards rather than U.S. GAAP. Also, the authors anticipate that everyone wants to use the cheaper previous edition, so they always change the end of chapter problems. The publisher also provides the professors with additional materials including exam materials, so there's always the incentive for the professor to use the latest edition and claim that it's the only acceptable one due to the end of chapter problems.

These are really heavy books - no fun to carry around. The book weighs 6.2 pounds. That's ridiculous. 1,440 pages and you darn well have to know this material. This gives a hint why so many people, despite knowing that good accountants tend to stay employed in a recession, won't even consider this route. But at least the Kieso books, other than their workbooks, are hardcover with large dimensions and quality paper and binding. Nothing is worse than using a thick softcover text that feels like a phone book. Unfortunately they're expensive new, and you might one day be buying the 18th edition used for a fraction of this price.

Note, if you need the WileyPlus access code, it is NOT included with this book. If your professor makes you get the code, you've got to spend even more money. You get this access code at the Wileyplus website. A kind student emailed me that the code now costs $83.50 at the site. Wiley also puts in place separate deals with some but not all college bookstores, although then the prices vary a lot at the college bookstore level. Sometimes, depending on how the professor intends to use the WileyPlus resource, you might just ask the professor and get the code, but those cases are rare.

A word of caution and encouragement: This Intermediate Accounting course along with the first one, Financial Accounting, are the two that were traditionally used to weed out students from becoming accounting majors. You've got to spend a lot more time on this course than you usually would for a typical course. Good luck - I wish you the best!

Excellent book, but no solutions!

This is an excellent book, very well written and comprehensive. However, without an instructor or a complete solutions manual, this book is impossible to use! When are authors and publishers going to learn that a beautifully thoughtout set of exercises is utterly worthless in a quantitative subject like Accounting without the solutions available! I'm presently taking a course from this book, however I would never buy this book for personal use - no answers!

Recommend this study guide

It only covers chapters 1-14 as the other reviews has stated, and is a bit expensive.

However, I got an "A" in my intermediate accounting class, and this guide helped a lot.

It don't replace reading the book, but does give a lot of extra problems and exercises (true/false, and multiple choice) to give more practice and understanding for the test.

I found the solutions to be correct and very few mistakes. When a true/false is false, it gives you the reason why, and on the multiple choice, gives you the reason why the correct choice is correct and why the others are wrong.

The brief review does not begin to cover everything in the chapter, and you will not even be able to complete the exercises/problems with just the chapter review. So, don't feel this will replace the textbook.

If you have the money, I recommend this study guide.

Comprehensive Book

Independent Component Analysis is a young and interesting topic that gained attention and still receiving more of it.
Until now this is the best introduction that has been written.
It is comprehensive, clear and unbiased.
I think that the book is a step toward making the subject not only a common field of research but also a reference for those looking for new challenging topics.
What worths mentioning is that the authors are very envolved in the development of the theory of ICA ,other books are good but are deviated by their author's own approachs and this is normal but unhealthy for a first book on any field.
What constitutes a great help for understanding ICA are the relatively easy concepts if one just intend to pick an algorithm(ex:FastICA), but this is not the case regarding its theory.
One colleague once argued that ICA should have emerged long before the begining of the 90's, claiming that Gaussian forms
(Central Limit-Theorem) killed the idea of dealing with other kinds of distributions and therefore the signal processing community went assuming every thing was gaussian (noise was gaussian,signals are gaussian),but the emerge of HOS relaxed the gaussian restriction and ICA became possible and no longer 'blind' .
I think this should prepare researchers to deal with coming challengs more intelligently and efficiently .That is why I recommend this book since it tries to give a broad view to the subject .

Nice and detailed description of ICA

This is a nice and self-contained book on the subject of independent component analysis (ICA). The authors start with relevant mathematical and statistical background (in Part I) to prepare readers for the derivations of ICA (though seasoned researchers may want to skip the first part of this book). The authors discuss the motivation behind ICA and present several ways to derive ICA (since this subject has been approached by several communities). The authors also compare and discuss the pros and cons of these approaches. The authors discuss several applications using ICA in Part III.
Compared with other ICA books, this manuscript has much depth and completeness. I highly recommend this book to any reader interested in this topic.
