DONALD HEDEKER, PHD, is Professor of Biostatistics in the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and the author of numerous peer-reviewed papers.

ROBERT D. GIBBONS, PHD, is Director of the Center for Health Statistics; Professor of Biostatistics in the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health; and Professor of Psychiatry in the College of Medicine, all at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and the author of numerous peer-reviewed papers.

good book with good coverage

This is a good book on this topic. It is not the best of a long list of excellent and highly competitive texts published by Wiley and Springer-Verlag but there cannot be too many books available on this important problem. This text may be better suited for some applied researchers who do not need the theoretical treatment that is given in the Rubin-Little, Verbeke-Molenberghs or the Fitzmaurice texts. The text by Rubin and Little deals with missing data problems in general and not just in the context of longitudinal data. But the Pattern Mixture models developed by Little are commonly used in longitudinal analysis.

An Excellent Starting Point!

Mr. Fridson has clearly dissected for us all the possible ways of achieving a net worth beyond a billion. The book is written in a clear, concise manner. It's almost like a tree diagram, if you will. Meaning the goals are like the nodes of the tree and the pathways to get to the goals are like the interconnections in a tree diagram.
He has backed up each section and node with examples of individuals who have travelled those paths such as H.L. Hunt, Ross Perot, Sam Walton, John D. Rockefeller, Bill Gates, Paul Getty, and Warren Buffet just to name a few. This book is an extremely good starting point if you would like to reach the top ranks in net worth. As the author correctly points out, we are lucky to have such a book in existence today, since even a decade ago people were not lucky enough to have a powerful source of information at their disposal.
A word of caution for the individuals in the investment field: Mr. Fridson points out and proves that to amass billions just by mere investments is not possible. He proves that to achieve billions in the investment field, one must acquire a substantial stake in a company and control the management and the direction of the company as a whole. This is precisely what Warren Buffett has accomplished (in despite of the common myth that he is just an investor).
The book is concluded in what I would say the most beautiful chapter. This is where we realize that tenacity and perseverence are traits ascribed to the great fortune builders. More than loving the money, self-made billionaires love the pursuit of money. We learn here that ordinary efforts and conventional approaches do not produce extraordinary results. One needs to do things differently and persistently to outmanage the competition.
To sum up, this is the greatest book (if not the only one) to teach us the pathways to amass billions and leaves the choices to us as to which path we like to follow to get there.

This book cuts to the chase!

How To Be A Billionare is a book that doesn't bore you with biographies on celebrity businessmen or feed you a bunch of new-age psychobable. With chapters on how to influence politicians and deal with unions, this is a must read for anyone serious about getting rich.

Films as Part of the Psychotherapy Process

As a clinical social worker and marriage and family therapist, I have found this book very useful. Different clients relate to therapy in different ways. Not all clients are verbal. Many are visual, and many are a combination of several learning modalities.

Using films in psychotherapy helps with insight, therapy itself, and utilizes metaphors as a way to move forward in the therapy process.

This book is divided up into several sections. It has recommendations for films dealing with abuse, divorce, grief and loss, substance abuse, marriage, aging and chronic illness - - just to name a few. The movies chosen are thoughtful selections and their are notes in the book for the therapist and for the patient.

I highly recommend this book and use movies as a regular part of therapy as often as I use books, tapes, or hand-outs.

After a mercifully brief discussion of various ethical systems, Dobrin sets out some typical ethical quandaries for readers to analyze, helping them establish their own moral IQ. Homework over, readers can relax and follow Dobrin and his guest experts as they navigate a series of provocative moral dilemmas. ethics 101

This was a good book on a subject that is tough for me...

I have read this book twice, the first time on my own the second as part of an online class... I was somewhat interested in ethics the first time I read the book and therefore did not finish the book. Again, ethics is a little tough for me. The second time I read this book, I was interested, applied myself, did some self-reflection and got quite a bit out of this book. It was excellent...

My take home message is this: If you are interested in ethics and will apply yourself this book is well worth your money. I got more out of this book than I did out of all of my graduate and undergraduate classes. If you are not interested in ethics... well if you are not interested in ethics, why are you even looking at this book in the first place????

This will make you think and grow.

This book is filled with a general introduction to practical ethical questions and with real-life scenarios about which you are asked the ethical thing to do. After you have pondered each scenario, you are presented with a discussion of the issues and both the author's reactions and that of at least one other person. Whether you come to the same conclusions as the author or not, the scenarios are excellent tools to make you think and the book is well worth reading and serious study.

Arthur Dobrin takes a novel approach to the study of ethics: Instead of crafting complex ethical systems, he encourages his readers to figure out their own standards. He does this by sketching the broad outlines of Judeo-Christian moral tradition and the ethical thinking of the world's great philosophers. After laying this basic groundwork, he proceeds to present readers with a series of scenarios in which they are asked to decide what they would do. Dobrin hopes that readers will discover patterns in their responses that will reveal their own ethical systems. We from getAbstract highly recommend this enlightening book.

great book, great idea

Wally Blischke is a professor of statistics in the school of business at the University of Southern California. I got to know him quite well when I was living in Southern California. I also once taught business statistics in his department. I also once worked with his wife Carol in the medical device industry. She is an engineer. He and Murthy have now written a series of three excellent books on reliability. The works incorporate both theory and application and they differ from many of their competitor as they introduce their research and that of others on the problem of setting warranties for manufactured goods.

The idea in this text was to take case studies from his coinsulting and from problems he solicited from Carol and industrial statisticians like me. I often find case studies as the best route to teach applied methods and give students an appreciation for the methods. I think Wally has that view also and that was a motivating factor for him to put together the examples in this text.
