A book that has a well balanced explanation with math and english.

Biostatistics textbooks usually either concentrate on the math or the explanations, and end up giving an unbalanced idea of the subject at hand.

Texts that choose to have both as different modules, are generally large (therefore more or less reference), expensive and at times incoherent.

I have come across a variety of texts dealing with the subject, from the popular Motulsky's book, Rosner, Dytham and even most of the Wiley series. I have found that this is one of those very few texts available that has a balanced explanation of stat with "the english of it" and "the maths of it".

In general the book follows the same sequence as standard biostatistics courses offered at second year of university. However it assumes the reader knows very little, at that same token the book is not written in a conderscending manner.

It is so well written that it can probably appeal to most readerships (undergraduate that is). It is not only an excellant primer but also a workable textbook.

Conceptual errors by the authods. Poor editing by Willey.

When a colleague saw that I'd bought Intro to Biostats, she mentioned that she had found quite a few typos and that she had not been able to find a list of errata . I checked a couple of sections at random and found typos in them. In addition, the book format makes it hard to understand. Enumerations that would be very clear in a table are set within the paragraph. This would work for short enumerations (e.g. five or fewer possible outcomes), but not when there are 36 possible outcomes, much less when some of those 36 are excluded. In a table, it would be very clear which outcomes are excluded. With the enumeration within the paragraph, one has to remember outcomes already seen to be able to deduce which ones were excluded.
Equations are a similar problem. Many long equations are not set between two paragraphs (as is done on most Maths. books). Instead the equations are part of the paragraph. An equation that takes three lines in a paragraph is difficult to grasp. I found myself writing the equations and enumerations to paper too often.
Because of the (unnecessary) difficulty to read the book, I don't have yet an opinion on the quality of the material covered.
The abundance of typos tells me that the authors did not proofread the book prior to publication. The setting of equations and enumeration within paragraphs tells me that the typesetter had never worked with books on mathematics and that the book was not reviewed by a potential user.
These are not unsurmountable problems –as many other Wiley books attest. A reprint is badly needed, but only after thorough
proofreading by the authors and at least one review by at least one person who knows the field.

While reading early chapters I began noticing conceptua errors. For example, in Section 4.3 they claim that the sum of three Poisson-distributed random variables is 'overdispersed', that is, the variance of the resulting variate is larger than the mean. For a Poisson distribution mean and variance are equal. Thus, according to the authors, the sum of three Poisson variates is not Poisson. However, if you check any probability book you'll find that the sum of any number of Poisson--distributed variates is also a Poisson variate.

On Exercise 5.1 the authors incorrectly explain that dizygotic twins are one of each gender. However, they can be the same or different gender (This might be neat peaking since it has nothing to do with biostatistics).

Great for Like Minded Kids

I bought this as a Christmas present for a map-loving church student of mine. I guess that maybe I didn't pay close enough attention to the style of the book when I ordered it, because when it arrived, I was dismayed to find that it wasn't exclusive to map reading and functioned more as a text book from school. Among topics it covers are orienteering and reading weather and oceanography maps.

However, my intended recipiant was more than thrilled to receive the book. He said that he's studying the same stuff at school and he loves it. He could hardly put it down in order to go through the church service. It was engaging and insightful, he said, and that's saying a lot coming from a kid who's ADD and hates to read. I recommend this product.

A Real Jewel in Decision Making Theory

There are many quantitative books on Decision Making Theory but this book deals basically with the subjective aspects of Decision Making. I used it at the University of São Paulo as textbook for a graduate class on Decision Making under Uncertainty together with Clemen & Reilly's book "Making Hard Decisions".
Bazerman's focus on common decion biases and heuristics makes us think a lot about how we make decisions and normally has nothing to do with rational quantitative "perfect world" decision making normally teached at business schools. Do read this book if Decision Making Theory is important for you, this is really a classic on this subject!!!! With less than 200 pages you really can't afford not reading it.

Makes you think about your own decision making process.

In his book, Judgment in Managerial Decision Making, Max Bazerman applies behavioral decision research into an organizational setting. He acknowledges that even though the rational decision-making process will lead to optimal decisions, the process is too time consuming to use in reality. Therefore, managers must rely on their intuitive judgment to find satisficing solutions to the problems they confront on a daily basis. The first half of the book examines the reader's judgment by explaining how the utilization of heuristics, rules of thumb used by managers to simplify problem solving in complex situations, can lead to irrational decisions when inappropriately applied. Cognitive biases are the cause of irrational decisions when heuristics are used improperly. In addition, Bazerman also offers an analysis of how uncertainty, escalation of commitment, and concern for fairness affect managerial decision-making. The second half of the book addresses how the decision-making process relates to both two-party and multiparty situations. Bazerman discusses the difficulty individuals face when trying to act rationally in competitive negotiations. He also describes the complexities work groups or project teams face when they hold a cooperative as well as a competitive position. The final chapter presents four strategies for improving the decision-making process. The first and second strategies are eliminating biases, and acquiring experience and expertise through feedback on the outcome of previous decisions. Both strategies are designed to alter intuitive responses to various decision-making situations. The third and fourth strategies offer techniques for improving decisions using linear models and accounting for the biases that influence the decisions of others. In his conclusions, Bazerman states that "the manager is likely rewarding behaviors that may not be functional in the future" by rewarding results rather than the decision-making process. Therefore, he recommends that managers reward employees for good decisions rather than results. Improving judgment and decision-making abilities is a step in the right direction towards making better decisions.

Summary - Judgment In Managerial Decision Making

Max Bazerman had one central purpose in mind when he wrote his book, Judgment In Managerial Decision Making. He hoped to improve the judgment and decision making skills of his audience, whether they be managers of multi-billion dollar corporations or consumers deciding how much to offer a salesman for a new car. Through the use of vivid real-world examples Max Bazerman identifies systematic ways in which judgment and decision making skills deviate from rationality under uncertain conditions. The end result is that the reader can readily comprehend the concepts outlined in the book and easily apply them to his or her own life.
The only major weakness in the book has to do with its discussion of the multiparty decision-making process. Because of the complex dynamics of these multiparty situations, Bazerman is forced to limit his coverage to only a select number of issues that he believes are especially pertinent to understanding decision making among several groups. Academics have also spent less formal research time on multiparty decision-making versus two-party and individual decision making. Therefore, the number of real-world contemporary examples are quite limited, making the reader less inclined to believe the results.

Excellent for applications

The book covers the fundamentals of graph theory and combinatorics (enumeration) and is designed for first courses for undergraduates.
The material is presented in a clear, friendly manner. The sections are short and specific and the emphasis is on problem-solving. Many examples are provided and constitute the majority of the book's volume. Each section ends with 20-30 exercises with answers (not full solutions) at the end of the book.
The book is excellent for computer science and applied math majors looking for a clear, application-based introduction to combinatorics and graph theory. It is also excellent for self-study.
The book's main flaw is that the proofs are not rigorous and are sometimes more intuitive than mathematical. For pure math students looking to explore graph theory and combinatorics in a more rigorous manner, other books (e.g. Diestel, "Graph Theory") will serve that purpose better.

An almost ideal introduction book to combinatorics

There have been wonderfully written reviews of this book, but since this is really an excellent textbook, I am urged to praise again. Fully recommended.
This book is easily and clearly written; covers almost every important basic concept and technic in graph theory and enumerative combinatorics, with neatly selected and wonderfully organised exercises.
And I highly suggest the author give the references to those last exercises in every section, since each of them does lead into a theory.

not impressed

I am a math grad student taking graph theory this semester. As a math major, I understand that one should have the ability to "fill in the holes". You can overdo anything, however. This book is ruined by its lack of examples. Also, it is like the author is in a hurry when he is talking about key ideas. Definitions are often stated in a rushed way that confuses me. Yet, he rambles on when discussing less relevant things. In short, this is a very hard text to read. Easy exercises seem hard because little foundation has been laid. I only paid $17 for this book on amazon. I could not imagine paying $100 for it.

I will admit that this book is a good source for exercises. Also, the proofs are fairly readable, provided you can grasp the "under-explained" key concepts that are less than readable.
