If you are going to get one epidemiology text, this is the one to get. It is well-written, straightforward, but not dumbed-down! It covers all of the major areas of epidemiology and there are ample references to more in-depth papers on specific topics. A companion web site includes review problems, outlines, slides, and link to external references. For the beginner, it is a great introduction to the field of epidemiology. If you have read more advanced books, Epidemiology Kept Simple will help solidify concepts and help link ideas together.

Very Worthwhile!

I purchased this book for an Epidemiology class...interestingly enough, the instructor of the class is the author! This is my first introduction to an epidemiology textbook and thus far, I've found the book to be extremely worthwhile. The concepts are clearly explained, the examples plentiful, and the online exercises are very valuable.

Good Book with Some Frustrating Shortcomings

Marcia Turner does an excellent job of laying out what KMart has done wrong over the years and builds a very convincing case, citing mostly secondary sources such as retail trade journals. The writing is clear and lively, but the "10 Deadly Sins" idea is rather tentatively executed. Many chapters discuss multiple sins, and partly because the entire history of the company has to be addressed in each chapter there is a fair amount of repetition.
But for me, the most frustrating thing about the book is that it is entirely an outsider's perspective. Turner does such an excellent job of documenting Kmart's persistent stupidity over many decades that at some point you want to hear from an insider to answer the question "what could they have been thinking?"
A particular strength of the book is laying out the competitive landscape of discount retailing. One major unanswered question (which, granted, would be very difficult to answer) is how big a role pervasive corruption has played in Kmart's decline. The conviction of a senior real estate executive for bribery indicates that self-dealing in the company may have gone back much further than the executives who put the company in bankruptcy.

Well researched, well written. Well Worth Reading.

When I picked up this book, I expected to find some interesting insights into why KMart, once so widely known and popular, ran into all its problems. A company whose stores were once part of the American landscape and whose blue light specials were exciting mini-events, spun into bankruptcy on January 22, 2002. What happened?
I looked at the author's credentials and, frankly, was a bit dismayed that she was author of "The Unofficial Guide to Starting a Small Business." Even though the title is described as a best-seller, I questioned whether such an author would be able to produce the kind of study that the K-Mart subject demands. Looking further through the book, I discovered that my concerns were totally unfounded. This book is quite well researched, as evidenced by the abundant footnotes at the end of each chapter. Turner lists, in her acknowledgements, some of the people she conferred with in putting this book together. Impressive. Almost academic.
The book begins with two features I appreciated. One was a chapter, called the introduction, which effectively sets the stage for the in-depth look at what happened... and why. The other feature is a time line that includes progressive events at Kmart and at Wal-Mart. A fascinating fact to ponder is that Kmart and Wal-Mart were started in the same year. Throughout the book, Turner interweaves and compares the strategies-and implications-of Kmart, Wal-Mart, and Target, as well as other retailers. This approach adds value to this book for every retailer-every business leader-who designs strategy with anticipated results. The bibliography and comprehensive index make this book a most usable tool.
A chapter is devoted to each of the Deadly Sins: Brand Mismanagement, Lack of Customer Knowledge, Underestimating Wal-Mart, Lousy Locations, Ignoring Store Appearance, Technology Aversion, Supply Chain Disconnect, Lack of Focus, Strategy du Jour, and Repeating the Same Mistakes. You'll learn about strategic blunders, tactical mismanagement, and operation deficiencies that crippled the potentially powerful chain retailer. Details even go down to the level of describing how insufficient staffing levels in the stores confounded efforts to keep the aisles clear of incoming merchandise, let alone serve the customer.
While you'll shake your head numerous times as you read this educational and insightful book, you'll gain new perspectives and cautions in the way you run your own business and life. Highly recommended.

Interesting, but repetitious

If you have watched with dismay (or glee) as K-mart has twisted in the wind for the last few years, you will probably find this book interesting. It is a pretty good analysis of what went wrong in the troubled company.
According to the book, in which industry analysts and business publications are quoted heavily, among K-mart's mistakes are:
Not having a focus (i.e., not knowing "who they are" or how to differentiate themselves from Wal-Mart and Target), relying too much on weekly advertising circulars, bringing back the BlueLight special, their haphazard approach to technology, having a short-term focus in terms of hiring and keeping a CEO, and their 2001 attempt to attract low-price shoppers by trying to undercut Wal-Mart.
The book's not without problems, though. For one thing, it is very repetitious. The book is divided into ten chapters, each of which ostensibly focuses on one of the deadly sins. But there is so much overlap in the content of the chapters that it's like reading the same chapter, reworded, over and over. I feel that I could have written the last half of the book myself.
In addition, Turner seems to contradict herself on several points. For example, at one point she criticizes K-mart for relying too strongly on Martha Stewart, and at another she seems to fault them for not focusing on her enough.
Not having read much business writing, I don't have much to compare it to, but I found the book to be a reasonably compelling read.

probability for finance made interesting

Glenn Shafer wrote a very thought provoking book on the mathematical theory of evidence many years ago. Vladimir Vovk was a student of Kolmogorov. At first I thought this would be a book that tries to replace the measure theoretic approach to probability with a game theory (gambling) approach and I was skeptical about it being successful. But these authors are serious and first rate probabilists who understand the theory, foundations and history of probability from all the angles.
The authors sell the book as two books. The first half presents probability theory and the classic probability results in the framework of a game between two opponents that they call Skeptic and the World. If we replaced Skeptic by Investor and World by Market we see it naturally as an investment problem in finance. They see their methodology as natural for a course in the probabilist approach to financial problems. The special topics in finance and important models such as Black-Scholes is then the subject of the second part of the book.

On the other hand if you replace Skeptic with Gambler and World with the House we see this as the natural gambling problem that really goes back to the origin of probability and the days of Fermat and Pascal. It is this third aspect of the book that I enjoy the most. In this first part, their approach is mixed in with the history of probability. The famous probabilists and their theories come to life in photographs and sketches. We get the introduction of Martingales as developed by Jean Ville in his 1939 book. The subjective approach of de Finetti, von Mises approach through collectives, Kolmogorov's establishment of mathematical rigor through the measure theoretic approach, Kolmogorov's later development of complexity theory and the various debates on probability by the great 20th century probabilists including J. L. Doob. We are even introduced to lesser knowns such as the UCLA mathematician Tony Martin (picture in the appendix with his theorem)who in 1990 provided an important advanced mathematical result in game theory that is important in these authors' approach. Curiously, we also see a picture of D. R. Cox a famous statistician (but not known for fundamental contributions to probability).

This book is long on historical perspective, philosophy and clear writing. But don't think that it is a probability for dummies book. The probability theory is deep and the mathematics is not necessarily simple. I think the authors find their approach more appealing than the usual measure theoretic approach that requires the formality of the holy triple (sample space, sigma algebra and probability measure).

This book is good for learning the history of probability from the Bernoulli's and DeMoivre and Laplace through to the 21st century. It is also good for learning the fundamentals of stochastic finance. A great book for probablists and statisticians to have.

Bayes is the only major historical character I can think of who is missing from the book and it is a mystery to me that they would leave him out especially since they do spend time covering deFinetti and subjective probability. They also say that their approach borrows from both the subjective and the frequentist schools. Bayesian methods are mentioned only briefly on page 59 where the "neosubjectivist" movement is discussed and we see a picture of Bruno de Finetti (the first one that I have seen).

If you want to see a different approach to finance that relies heavily on the Ito Calculus, Mike Steele's book published by Princeton University Press offers it to you. That book is one of the few references on the subject that is not in the authors' bibliography. The bibliography is nice and fairly extensive.

This book could be used for a graduate level course in probability from a non-traditional framework. It is good also for business school students with a serious interest in probability and the second half of the book could be used for a course in stochastic finance.

a history book?

The idea of this book is a superb one: to teach probability from a "gambling" point of view, recovering in this way the origins and development of this area. But the authors have decided to go over a complete account on the historical evolution of the subjacent concepts. It turns out that it is neither a book on the history of probability, nor a clear and well written textbook.

* One of the first questions prospective purchasers ask when looking at telescopes is “what can I see with it?” It is certainly a valid question but one that sales staff can only answer in very broad terms with regard to the types of objects and detail visible with a given aperture. Faced with a dark sky and a bewildering number of stars, beginners soon realize that those objects often prove quite elusive and expert guidance at the eyepiece is essential. Star Watch is designed to take the reader by the hand and guide him or her on a memorable journey through the universe.
Encompassing both binocular and small to medium aperture telescope observing, Phil Harrington’s latest book appeals to a wide spectrum of the amateur astronomy community and provides a firm grounding in all aspects of observational astronomy. At some point, most amateur astronomers come to appreciate that one or more facets appeal most and beginners too must discover in which direction their interests lie.
Your journey starts close to home with our nearest neighbour, the Moon. Here, the author splits the lunar month into partial phases with the most prominent features described and accompanied by labeled photographs taken by the author. Virtually all budding astronomers are also interested in the planets. Many years ago, my first views of Saturn and Jupiter knocked me out and whoever was lucky enough to see mars on its closest approach last autumn through a good telescope will not easily forget the brilliant detail visible on the Red Planet. Phil Harrington seems to have pitched the level of information just right for those taking their first views of the planets and also provides useful tips on observing asteroids, comets and the Sun.
The latter two-thirds of Star Watch is devoted to deep sky, a term referring to objects lying outside our solar system. Most of the deep sky objects comprise those within the Messier Catalogue accompanied by a fair sprinkling of some of the most attractive double stars and NGC objects. It is an eclectic mix of clusters, galaxies, nebulae and stars that is sure to please all observers. The list is divided over the four seasons and further sub-divided into Sky Windows, each Sky Window with its own map showing the location of the objects within. I could not find any reference to the limiting star magnitude of the Sky Windows but it seems to be magnitude of the Sky Windows but it seems to be magnitude 7. Serving up the night sky in bite-size chunks is an excellent way keeping the reader focused on a particular area instead of wandering all over the sky. Again, the level of information in the text on where and what to look for is spot on for inexperienced observers and the inclusion of a “WOW!” FACTOR rating indicates how impressive each object is through binoculars, small telescopes and medium telescopes.
I tested some of the summer Sky Windows using my 15 x 50 binoculars and a 90mm telescope and found the objects relatively easily using the principal maps. The all-sky insets are too small to be of any real practical use but do help to correlate the celestial location of a particular Sky Window with the larger seasonal and key maps at the beginning of each chapter.
So, is Star Watch the ideal companion for people starting out in this wonderful hobby, or indeed those with limited observing experience? Yes, it most certainly is! By the time a beginner completes the lunar, planetary and deep sky explorations using this book as a guide, he or she will be an accomplished amateur astronomer ready to delve even deeper into the universe around us and, with a certificate to prove it. The best text for those newly introduced to the skies

I am a serial hobbyist. I pick up a new hobby about once every year (and keep most of my old ones) and this year it's astronomy. With any new hobbies I check out maybe a dozen books from the library to read about the subject straight from the firehose. By then I know what books I'd like to keep.
"Sky Watch" is as important to me as my telescope! My telescope does not have the computerized automatic finder so I have to search for galaxies I'd like to see. This book has all my favorites listed and it's well drawn diagrams get me there in a hurry. The book is very similar to "Turn Left at Orion", which appears to be the most popular in the category (and deservedly so.) "Turn Left's" diagrams assume more familiarity with the constellations so you can stumble a little bit, but it's "naked eye/telescope" views help you zero in on smaller object if the telescope's optical rotation of the view confuses you. I believe "Sky Watch's" diagrams are easier to read and navigate, and will get you to the region-of-interest quicker. Buy "Sky Watch" first, use a low-power eyepiece when seeking, and put in a high power eyepiece when you've found it. Use "Turn Left" when you need to hop from star to star using a high-power eyepiece.
Using this book as your guide, you will quickly develop an "astronomer's head" for finding your favorite celestial objects, and the ability to make good use out of any optics, whether it be binoculars, a basic telescope, or some money-is-no-object major league light-bucket.

A very well written "motivator".

I have had a lifelong interest in astronomy;in fact it was ranked very high as a possible career choice when I was (a LOT) younger. After reading this book , it left me wishing that it had been available sooner. It stands alone in a field filled with "guidebooks" , for it assists both the rank beginner and the old duffers in finding some of the most beautiful and interesting objects in the heavens.
Let me state that this is not a children's book. It is not overly technical , but assumes that the individual using it is somewhat equipped for the hobby (obsession?) with at least a pair of binoculars , and probably is able to buy or obtain access to a small "backyard" telescope. For a properly equipped individual, this is a real "guided tour" that certainly stimulates the appetite for "more".
The book is divided into sections that the author describes as "near space" and "deep space". Near space consisting of the Moon and other Solar System objects ; planets , the Sun , comets , etc. , and deep space being all extra-solar system objects , such as double stars , nebulae , star clusters , and galaxies.
For me , the book was a great re-motivator. I found that I had never really "lost interest" -my interest was simply dormant , and for my part I must give Phil Harrington alot of credit. This is a soft cover book , so it accompanies me outside ; I make notes in the margins and have come to regard it as a friend come over to help me find new objects , an re-find things I could find many years ago and had forgotten.
I rated the book on the following points: content (information)-5 stars; readability-5 stars ; clarity of instructions-5 stars. It isn't a glitzy "coffee table" book ; it was meant to be used. So--5 stars all the way!

Star Watch, Great Finding Charts , Seasonal Window Charts!!

A well done book (soft cover) with Seasonal Finding Charts, Complete Famed Messier Catalog (110 of the Clusters, Nebula, and Galaxies thru most backyard telescopes)and brighter NGC'S. Even Maps of the Moon's features plenty for the casual observor as myself, Bonus Info on Double Stars, Planets as well !! Beautifully done. Wish I had this book years ago, even if you have the latest goto telescopes is a fantastic aid as lists what to expect to see with binoculars, 3 to 5 inch telescopes, and larger. Does not photograph every item but still enough to wet the appetite. Also a Great Value Book !! Just under 300 pages of pure enjoyment !!

Changing My Life

Beverly's book has been the catalyst for me to begin loving myself. I have had the opportunity to put into practice the suggestions that she makes in her book and I can happily say that they work! I find that it really is o.k. to love me first; to take care of myself; and the rest of my life is falling into place the way that I have wanted it to for so many years. I hope that everyone who has had a problem in relationships will read this book because it can only enhance the positive. Thank you to Beverly for all of her years of study and her gift of being able to communicate that knowledge to others through her books. Enjoy.
