Excellent Problems, Mediocre Exposition, Overpriced

(When I wrote this review D+F was almost one hundred and fifty dollars. It seems to have dropped in price significantly since then)

D+F tries to straddle the line between being a book for advanced undergraduates and a book for graduate students and does a decent job. It is fairly readable, with many excellent exercises and lots of examples. The book also covers all the material in the standard graduate algebra sequence. The section on group theory is particularly good.

I think the biggest problem with D+F is that it is bland. The exposition isn't a joy to read and full of motivation like that of Halmos, Stillwell, or Eisenbud and it isn't full of deep insights like that of MacLane, Lang, or Artin. In addition Category Theory is pushed off to an appendix at the end of the book rather than integrated through the text. Finally the book is expensive and the binding is terrible.

If you want to learn algebra I would recommend purchasing some of these cheaper more focused texts since almost everything in D+F is treated better elsewhere:

Basic Algebra - Mac Lane + Birkhoff - Algebra 3rd Edition
Galois Theory: Stillwell - Elements of Algebra, Artin - Galois Theory
Commutative Algebra: Eisenbud - Commutative Algebra With a View Towards Algebraic Geometry
Homological Algebra: Weibel - An Introduction to Homological Algebra, Mac Lane - Homology
Representation Theory - Fulton + Harris - Representation Theory

If on the other hand you are already fairly comfortable with algebra and are looking for a one volume reference I would just buy Lang. It is less than half the price, more advanced, and has more material.

The book after Herstein

I think I would only recommend this book to someone who has already had some exposure to algebra (or one especially gifted in mathematics). The beginning of the book is not too bad, but towards the end of Part I the pace quickens quite a bit. If you are willing to read over the text many times, and do all of the non-trivial exercises (there is an impressive olla podrida of algebra in them, most of which are the beginnings of some very deep ideas), then it should be a very rewarding experience. Namely because this is one of the most readable textbooks which covers everything from groups, rings, and fields to homological algebra and algebraic geometry. It is very rare to see this much material covered in one book, and for it to remain so structured (Rotman is an example of a book that covers a lot of material, but loses its structure somewhere).

Excellent book

I am surprised that this book has not got the 5 stars. It is very suitable for advanced undergraduates/first-year graduates. The book is full of examples; and the proofs are amazingly clear and succinct. The book introduces new concepts in the excercises long before the student encounters them in the sections.

This is a beautiful way to teach mathemtatics,--and indeed to learn it. The book is replete with examples that connect concepts from toplogy and real analysis with Algebra.

This book definitely deserves the 5 STARS.

Not nearly as impressed w/the author as he is w/himself

Okay- I realize that negative reviews tend to get "No, this review didn't help me" votes, but seriously - if I can stop ONE person from wasting their money & time, I've gotta brave it.
I'm a big fan of the ADWEEK books... but this one...
First- the author spends the first 40+ pages telling you about the "impressive" (his word) list of companies he's worked with and how brilliant and successful he is and the importance of this topic. He even says that the reason his techniques (and they are NOT his alone- but more on that in a second) are so successful is b/c of the names he's given them (he's even got little "TM"s next to some of them)- Anyway- did you get that- it's not the ideas! It's the NAMES! Now that is a creative argument.
He also wastes a PROFOUND amount of time telling you about the domain of creativity. I know that should be an important topic- but how many times and ways do I have to hear that talent (say, ability to draw) is not the same thing as creativity. He even puts in a picture his dad painted and bashes it as talented (accurate rendering) but not creative (painted from another painting). He also spends a frightening amount of time telling you how his ideas will help you. It should have taken maybe 5 pages- he took 69. You spend nearly 70 pages feeling like you are reading an infomercial for his seminars. A personal pet peeve of mine are these little Rolodex-looking cards he has printed throughout that are written by companies talking about how helpful his seminars and ideas were to developing ideas. If they were case studies, this might have been helpful- instead it's more "Gosh- his seminar/technique sure did help us, and we are selling more t-shirts than ever!" Again, I only learned how important and significant this Monahan guy is.
Now- the tools he uses... it's not that his tools are useless- it's that there are so FEW of them and there is not one single thing he discusses in his book that isn't covered in Thinkertoys (and some are even in Hey Whipple Squeeze This). Not only that, but they are covered in more depth in Thinkertoys, with better and more thorough examples, and there are more ideas overall in that book (there are only 7 here-there are TONS in Thinkertoys).
Honestly- I could bash this book all day- let me just PLEASE save you some time and energy- get Thinkertoys (and if you are really specifically interested in the creative process in advertising- Hey Whipple) and SAVE YOUR TIME. You will not miss SQUAT.

Not for me.

I too found that this book focuses way too much on how great Tom Monahan is, how to read the book and how proud he is of the names for his creativity excersises. It's distracting. He put the mashed potatoes all over the top of the meat.
After reading half of this book, out of order (which he encourages), I was disappointed. I didn't feel like I was learning anything new. But then I realized that I am not the target. This book is not for people who are already advertising creatives. This book would be great if you're someone who wants to get into the creative department, or if you are in a non-creative industry and you want to learn how to come up with innovative ideas. But for me, he's just telling me about what I do every day.
I don't know everything. I'm no Tom Monahan. But I was expecting "Hey Whipple" and I got "Hey Arnold" -- Good. Just not geared towards me.

A student's perspective

I have found this book to be useful for my foundations class. However, I have made a lot of corrections in calculations, axis labeling, and other minor but important information in the text. It seems that some editing needs to take place prior to the next edition of this text. The content is good but minor errors are scattered through the book.

Great practical reference, especially for deep foundations

You may be able to find a lot of books on shallow foundations, but hard to find one on deep foundations. This is a great practical reference, and actually the only text book I have and use for deep foundations. However, I agree with the previous reviewer that it has errors, sometimes in the plus/minus signs in equations. That is very confusing and annoying, especially if you do not have another reference to cross-check. The material on group action of piles can be improved I think. Since Dr. Reese himself developed the LPILE software, its basis of analysis is described in detail, which is great because it is arguably universally used across the industry for lateral load analysis. Since good text on shallow foundations is available elsewhere, I wouldn't mind if it dealt exclusively with deep foundations and may be include more material on practical aspects of pile driving and construction of drilled piers. Overall, I find it very useful.

Hard Text to Use for Self-Teaching

The authors of this text dislike the "plug and chug" methods of other texts, possibly necessitating an instructor more strongly than other books. The book stresses graphs and "real life" applications, making it more realistic and less abstract than other Calc books may seem. Contains useful formulas and rules on inside covers and selected answers section at the back. Overall a great book to use in class.

Calculus Written in Plain English

This is not the classic calculations approach to the subject. It is a totally new way of thinking and mastering the subject with out having to do page upon page of number crunching. Use this book along with a graphing calculator and you too can learn to literally see what happens when equations are manipulated. A begining student conceptually gains an understanding of the subject with out getting bogged down in plugging and chugging and derivations. It's written in plain English.

Accounting for the Investor

While experts wring hands and say "mistakes were made," this book gives average investors the "how to" in order to make sense of annual reports and balance sheets. It seems to blow the lid off of the various methods that managers used to hide bad debt and shaking investments. Undoubtly, good for most investors who want to avoid a repeat of Enron. It also offers a pretty explanation of why major accounting and auditing firms can't be trusted. At last, a book that allows investors to keep their investments and earn money--instead of CEOs and corporate executives. Favorite Chapter: How to Hide Debt with Pension Accounting.

Competent analysis of off balance sheet accounting

An expert describes some the main devices used to distort financial information for public consumption, focusing on those which hide debt. I found it both informative and highly readable. Some background in business accounting is helpful but not necessary for the reader.
