WILDLY uneven.

This book is an impressive accomplishment, admittedly. It is a vast amount of information, very thorough, complete, and seems to cover every aspect of professional practice for an architect. I have other editions of this book back to the 1958 copy, and they are fairly extraordinary records of the changes in the profession.

The failures of this book are to some extent caused by its subject matter. Architectural practice has changed in the last decade for some firms, and this book admirably tries to reflect and analyze that change -- although this probably holds true for a very small number of firms. If you're a partner at Skidmore Owings and Merrill and trying to broadly envision where practice is heading, hey this book is perfect for you. But I imagine many firms are not going to have that much use for re-examining the nature of the "client" or "project," a lot of this material would be better served by smaller (cheaper) specialized books.

It's an ambitious goal to attempt a comprehensive overview of architectural practice but its editing doesn't rise to the occasion. In between interesting insights and clear explanations of practice topics you really can't find elsewhere, you find some seriously clunky essays and information that is comically useless.

For example, consider this gem in an essay on architecture and the web: "Email is a personal, direct connection to the Internet. You can send messages, attach drawings, and communicate instantly across the globe with a few clicks of the mouse. Email is much like regular mail. You send mail to particular addresses, and they write to you at yours..." Okay, this for a book published in 2001. Not 1981, but 2001. Are they also going to explain what a telephone thingy is on my desk, or what I'm supposed to do with this fax machine here? It might have been useful to have a page about email's legal status, or how a firm should set policies about email, but what we've got here is a page long description for someone who's been living under a rock and has no idea what email actually IS. Although this is simply one minor example, it is the kind of thing that makes this book wildly uneven and screaming for a competent editor. For the price of this book I think we deserve more.

Worth It!

In addition to the all-new format (thankfully no more binders!), this book really does cover EVERYTHING an architect needs to know to run a business-- from working with clients to developing added-value services-- all in one book. I especially appreciate the new section devoted to understanding client motivation, thinking, processes, and values and the new section summarizing services I can offer to expand my client base. This is definitely the book that every architect needs to keep close at hand!

This book is a classic in the field

Pretty much the best book you'll find in the area of infrared system engineering. I just started learning about this field, and it gives a very clear and lucid introduction to this area. I was referred to this book by somebody who has been in the field for a long time and who still uses this book for reference. Though the technology is out-dated, the book is dominated by concepts and is relevant to those trying to understand the arcane field of IR.

Gold standard for the field

There's really nothing to say about this product. It is, and has been, the best book on the subject for forever.

My main concern is that it does spend a number of pages describing the use of slide rules for computation which are no longer produced. An updated version detailing a computer algorithm would be appreciated. It also seems a little lacking in the mathematical theory, devoting only one chapter to these details.

The fundamental difference between technology when the book was initially published and today is the revolution in computing technology, and the subsequent revolution in computer simulation and modeling. Accordingly, a future update should be revised to include more mathematical theory -- and more examples -- of use to software models.

But even with these weaknesses, IMO this is a "must-have" for anyone interested in this field.

The "classic" text, still relevant in 2014

I am a consultant and frequently need to get up to speed quickly on technical topics related to the projects I support. I asked a fellow optical systems designer what I should read to get smart on IR sensing systems and he simply said "the Hudson book." Well, this is that book; published in 1969, very little of it has become obsolete in that time. Yes, he talks about Radiation Calculator slide rules versus Matlab programs for numerically solving the equations of radiance, but the basic math is still the same. It's definitely the first book you'll reach for when you want a thorough introduction to all aspects of IR sensing systems. Just supplement it with some contemporary material on uncooled microbolometers and you're set.

Great Book on the Finite Element Method for EM

I use commercial simulation tools and have had an introductory computational EM course, but I am not a numerical EM expert. This is a well-written book with a logical and precise presentation. There are two other books on this topic that I have studied. In comparison to the book by Volakis et al, the initial development here is more formal and clear. Sadiku's book covers many more methods than the finite element method and is difficult to compare because of that reason.

ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT WORKS IN FINITE ELEMENT METHOD

Enrichs the first edition by the latest development in the finite element method in electromagnetics. Documents for the first time higher-order vector finite elements, perfectly matched layer as the absorbing boundary condition, hybrid finite-element and asymptotic methods, advanced finite-element boundary-integral method in conjunction with the fast integral solvers such as FMM, and finite element method in time domain. A state-of-the-art as well as a systematic treatment of finite element method. Though the complexity in nature, the author's writing is so good that one could have a hard time in putting it down once he opened it. None of the finite element books ever published in electromagnetics can be its parallel in depth, completeness, and reader-friendliness. If you are a beginner who wants to learn finite element method, this book is the choice. If you are an expertise who wants to know more about finite element method, so it is.

The most comprehensive and up-to-date FEM book in EM

The book covers all the basic theory of FEM in electromagnetics, which is perfect for those beginners in FEM. The book also has lots of materials on the most recent developments such as hybrid techniques, method of moments and its fast solver, etc. So it is very good choice for researchers in the area of computational electromagnetics. Nicely written and easy to read. If you want to know anythhing about FEM in EM, this is the book. Go for it.

If you are studying Anatomy, this may be the book for you

This really is a very good book. He really explains things very well. The chapters are layed out in a logical order and there are quizes and questions along the way. The book is well written too. I would recommend this book to a student, but it wouldn't be my first recommendation. There are others like Marieb & Martini that I like because the style of writing isn't quite as dry as Tortora. It still is an excellent book though. One of the best.

Great book for anyone taking college anatomy and Physiology

My study group and I used this book for our college anatomy and physiology classes. We found that the text was quite easy to comprehend and the pictures of muscles was very clear and precise. We also used the following 3 books when we were preparing for our midterm and final exams.

Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: (Volume 1 and Volume 2) are outstanding study guides. It showed us the kind of questions to prepare for when we took our exams. We saw many of the type of questions asked on our exams from studying these study guides. Also, Key Facts for Anatomy and Physiology focused on the key ideas asked on the exams. I guess this is why me and my study group all got over 90 averages in our classes. This was our exact study plan. First, read important stuff in Tortora's textbook to get a really good understanding of A and P. For the test, we prepared heavy by studying the last 3 books described and using Tortora's book as a reference.

Excellent Anatomy and Physio text

For a new student of anatomy and physiology, this text is incredible. It's got a wealth of material, is easy to use and understand (without being simplistic), and does an excellent job integrating the principles of physiology in with the basic anatomy. It even has some small clinical asides that are both interesting and relevant. I used this book for all of my undergrad work, and have kept it as a valuable reference for my med school anatomy. I also picked up and use a copy of Moore's "Clinically Oriented Anatomy", which is also excellent, yet much more advanced/detailed....for a quick reference I find that I always check Tortora/Grabowski first, and go to a deeper text only if what I need isn't covered in sufficient depth, which rarely happens. This is an outstanding textbook for A&P.

Optimal Thinking works for everyone

I discovered Optimal Thinking in 1992 when I heard Dr. Glickman address an audience of more than 1000 people at The International Conference on Thinking as the plenary speaker. I was deeply impacted by her presentation and invited her to present an Optimal Thinking seminar to a cross section of employees at my company four months later.
Optimal Thinking is a universal resource that embraces all forms of thinking, all people and all situations. On a daily basis, I have seen what it has done for my secretary, Sandy, whose husband passed away due to a brain tumor. Sandy used Optimal Thinking through their worst days together, always doing her best, no matter how hard it got. She uses Optimal Thinking in the office to guide her decisions, and I can rely on her to make the most of whatever crosses her desk.
As for me, although I am analytical by nature, I used to make irrational, costly decisions when I became emotional. I have learned to stop and use Optimal Thinking to find the best solution rather than dig myself into a hole.
Pre-optimization in our company, our sales force consisted of senior sales people and newcomers, some jaded, some fresh and realistic, others who were generally optimistic. My wife brought this book home after participating in an Optimal Thinking seminar at her company. Although I was somewhat skeptical, I tried to approach the book with an open mind. I admit that I was interested in finding out how much of my thinking was in my best interest so I responded to that quiz. When I read the part about the strengths and weaknesses of positive and negative thinking, I got hooked and pulled out my highlighter pen. Up until then, like most people, I had been confused about when to be positive, negative or neutral.
During the following week, I tested the templates for simple and complex decision-making and they worked. I made the right choices integrating my heart and my mind for the first time. All that said, this book won me over. Optimal Thinking is a must read if you want to make the most of your personal life and career. Making the most of life means something different to each of us. Optimal Thinking is the vehicle that takes you from a bad, neutral, mediocre or an extraordinarily positive moment to your best moment. From one best moment, Optimal Thinking takes you to the next best moment, and to a life of increasingly more best moments. I am a doer and can feel guilty when I am not productive. I laughed and heaved a sigh of relief when the author said, "If your response to `What's in my best interest?' is `Take a nap,' then do it. You can choose to snooze knowing that it is in your best interest."

This book is easy to read. About the Author
SUSAN FOSTER was one of Oracle Corporation's first financial system consultants. In 1990, she became an independent Oracle applications consultant, starting her own consulting firm in 1994. Her Oracle applications project experience includes being the project leader for twenty-plus implementations, one accounting flexfield structure change, and one calendar change (neither through a reimplementation). She has presented papers at eight national and regional Oracle Application User Group Conferences.

Very disappointing

Though there are very few books about Oracle Applications Version 11i, this is not a good reason to buy this book. One gets the feeling that it has been assembled from a set of consultant's hand outs. It is badly written and the publisher seems to have dispensed with the services of editor and proof reader. For example, diagrams 1.3 and 1.4, meant to demonstrate the difference between single organization and multi-organization structures are in fact completely identical. This doesn't give one a great deal of confidence in the accuracy of the rest of the information in the book. The section on conversion contains the sentence "Converting legacy data can be time-consuming, expensive and complex" and then in the following paragraph "If the volume is too large, convert the legacy data via a custom software conversion program. The process can be complex and time consuming". I think we got the point the first time.
It would be great if there was a good book about Oracle Applications, but this isn't it. I feel embarrassed to have spent my employer's money on it, if I had paid for it myself I would be very angry indeed.

Hopeless!

This book is some kind of joke. And I'm the last one to laugh, 'cause I had to spend over 60$ on this one. It is full of screenshots and hardly any verbage. If there is any, it simply gives you the basic navigation instructions for 11i screens. Well, it did one good thing though, it inspired me to write a book on the subject that I have no knowledge on. Here's what I'm going to do. Get all the user manuals, tear them apart and throw the pages in the air. Which ever land on a table, simply collect them, bind them together, and viola...you have a book with a title that reads something like "Implementing some hi-tech applications...blah blah blah..." !

A good Introductory Book

This book is a good starter book; much better than Oracle Materials. It gives good Introduction to Oracle Modules GL,AR and AP with the help of screen shots. (in fact, lots of screen shots help the understanding).
Though the contents are not for an advanced user (who would use Oracle User guide then) but still for a person who has not seen Oracle Financial Applications at all, it would be a good first step.
I did not rate 5 star because
1. it did not cover 2 financial modules : Fixed Assets and Cash Management
2. A chapter on what is happening behind the screen in applications (like general concept of Oracle Tables, TRMs etc. would have helped.
3. Should have included as an appendix: Additional Sources of Information like Metalink, OTN web etc.

Interesting book about an interesting man

Waller, known for his works on espionage during WWII, has written an easy readable, fast paced look at Felix Kersten and the plot to turn Himmler against Hitler. It is not so much a biography of Kersten as it is a detailed account of how Kersten, and also Schellenberg, attempted to get Himmler to disobey orders and even attempt to overthrow Hitler to make peace with the Western Allies. The book is a fascinating look at the in-fighting that occurred within the Nazi party structure and gives a good look at the resistance movement within Nazi Germany. The epilogue gives a good look at the post-war life of Kersten and some of the other key players.

The only negative is that the book is marred with typographical and grammatical errors which at times can make the read frustrating. Beyond that, well worth the read.

Fascinating Look at Nazis through Man with Intelligence Ties

John Waller has done a great job of giving us an insiders look at the Nazi government at the top. His 'vehicle' is a fellow by the name of Felix Kersten, who. by one of those strange twists of history, became Heinrich Himmler's indispensable personal masseur. In that position Kersten, with connections to OSS and British intelligence, was able to influence Himmler. It is an outrageous story that provides exceptional insight in the personalities at the top of the Nazi machine.
The story has a particular relevance to this reviewer, as Kersten played a role in preventing the resettlement of millions of "irreconcilable" Dutchmen to Eastern Poland and the Ukraine in 1941 and 1942. The Dutch hated the Nazi occupiers, and their opposition and riots in 1941 had enraged Hitler. Kersten saw the documentation, was appalled, and adopted the strategy of convincing Himmler that his health would be at serious risk if he undertook such a demanding task. Himmler finally decided to persuade Hitler that Germany's logistical system would be over-taxed by mass-moving people across the continent while fighting the war on the Eastern front. The operation was postponed till after the war. This tale was thoroughly investigated by the Dutch Government after the war, and validated. Kersten was appropriately honored.
This vignette is only one of the many in the book. It was November 11, 1941, that Himmler emerged from the Fuhrer's presence and announced that the "destruction of the Jews is being actively planned." The occupied eastern territories "are to become free of Jews." These wartime orders in 1941 went well beyond the earlier decree in January 24, 1939, which intended to solve the 'Jewish question' by emigration and evacuation. Hitler's outbursts of temper and raving and ranting were often interpreted by his lieutenants as policy edicts to be carried out literally. The more one reads of what went on at the human level at the Nazi top, the more one is reminded of an insane asylum. How this Austrian misfit, Adolph Schickelgruber Hitler, unemployed in Vienna in 1913, cast into - and surviving - the traumatic trench warfare mass murder cauldrons of World War I, absorbing and caricaturing the prevailing cultural theories of racial blood purity, cranium indices denoting superior intelligence, and terror bombing (Douhet), and could then exploit the crisis of capitalism and the threat of communism by rising to the leadership of the German Reich -- and then driven by powerful paranoias, bring such misery to millions, particularly Poles, Russians, Germans, and others, and the Jewish compatriots that lived among them, defies staggering odds. I highly recommend this book. John Waller is a immensely respected OSS and CIA veteran, and author, who writes beautifully and with care, on a topic we should not forget.

Dr. Felix Kersten is a true World War II hero. Through his assigned job of being physical therapist to Heinrich Himmler, one of the most notorious, evil Nazi's of the war, read this fascinating true story of courage and manipulation. Kersten pounced on Himmler's naivete and prevented the persecution of thousands. Any history or war buff would love this book.
