The Alchemy of Finance, by George Soros

New chapter by Soros on the secrets to his success along with a new Preface and Introduction.
New Foreword by renowned economist Paul Volcker
"An extraordinary . . . inside look into the decision-making process of the most successful money manager of our time. Fantastic." -The Wall Street Journal
George Soros is unquestionably one of the most powerful and profitable investors in the world today. Dubbed by BusinessWeek as "the Man who Moves Markets," Soros made a fortune competing with the British pound and remains active today in the global financial community. Now, in this special edition of the classic investment book, The Alchemy of Finance, Soros presents a theoretical and practical account of current financial trends and a new paradigm by which to understand the financial market today. This edition's expanded and revised Introduction details Soros's innovative investment practices along with his views of the world and world order. He also describes a new paradigm for the "theory of reflexivity" which underlies his unique investment strategies. Filled with expert advice and valuable business lessons, The Alchemy of Finance reveals the timeless principles of an investing legend.
This special edition will feature a new chapter by Soros on the secrets of his success and a new Foreword by the Honorable Paul Volcker, former Chairman of the Federal Reserve.
George Soros (New York, NY) is President of Soros Fund Management and Chief Investment Advisor to Quantum Fund N.V., a $12 billion international investment fund. Besides his numerous ventures in finance, Soros is also extremely active in the worlds of education, culture, and economic aid and development through his Open Society Fund and the Soros Foundation.

From Publishers Weekly
Soros, who manages the Quantum mutual fund based in Venezuela, here traces the fund's performance in a controlled experiment using leverage in many markets (stocks, bonds, indexes, currency, etc.), to test the Reaganomics "imperial circle" and to demonstrate his own economic theory of "reflexivity." It is investors' perception of market values, claims the author, which perpetuates up-or-down price trends, foreign exchange movements, periodic government regulation, and so on. The most studious investment calculations, he concedes, are in the end more alchemy than science. As to such problems as the massive U.S. domestic and trade deficits and the Damoclean Third World debt, Soros offers innovative suggestions, including an international oil-based currency and a system of variable interest-rate bonds keyed to the volume of a borrower country's export trade.

From Library Journal
Soros, manager of the billion dollar Quantum Fund, certainly has credentials that merit attention to his personal approach to money management. As might be expected, he describes his so-called "theory of reflexivity" in a manner more appealing to serious market players than to the casual investor. Of more general interest is his account of a one-year real time series of investment decisions that resulted in his Quantum Fund more than doubling in value. Libraries serving a serious investment community should add this. Joseph Barth, U.S. Military Academy Lib.

Lesson in Dealing with Uncertainty
By C. Kurdas
In this updated edition, Soros summarizes his worldly philosophy--the connection between thought and reality and how it applies to financial markets. The heart of the book remains Mr. Soros's account of what he did with Quantum Fund in the mid-1980s, both as an example of his approach and a remarkable lesson in how to make money in markets where most of the time nobody, including Mr. Soros, knows what's coming next.
His philosophical tenet, Reflexivity, denotes a feedback loop: Individuals act on their views of a situation, thereby changing the situation. For example, if traders believe a stock is going up, they buy it, thereby bidding it up. But their belief caused the result; there may be no fundamental reason for the rise.
Thus what we think determines what we do and has consequences, but typically it is not correct.
Inspired by Heisenberg's rule about quantum particles, Soros proclaims a human uncertainty principle which suggests our understanding is often incoherent and always incomplete. From his case study, one notices that uncertainty continually besets Mr. Soros in managing his hedge fund, which has the same name as the particles subject to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle.
General models do not always translate into money making practice. But Soros provides an insight of great practical significance: traders need to be adaptive, because there is no way of knowing beforehand how a market situation will turn out.
The Quantum Fund experience demonstrates how that works. This exercise in global macro strategy, a master speculator's take on commodity, currency and equity markets, is a a litany of doubts and hazards.
He's been losing on currency trades for several years. Then in September 1985, he makes a killing by buying a lot of yen just before central banks switch to a new exchange rate system and the yen rises. There is a pattern: he sustains losses, reduces positions, gets out, then sees a great opportunity and pounces. In short, he constantly and quickly adapts to events.
Despite various setbacks, Quantum Fund's NAV per share rose 121% in 1985 and 43% in 1986. Such numbers make for legend and Mr. Soros became one.
How did he do it? He keeps an open mind and continually modifies his outlook with new information. As he remarks, "the markets provide a merciless reality check," and Mr. Soros never stays with an idea that fails the test. Most of the time he can't predict what's coming, but he promptly corrects course in response to feedback. That limits losses. On rare occasions he can see through the fog of uncertainty and hauls in the booty.
This is not an easy book to read, but as another hedge fund manager, Paul Tudor Jones, describes it in the foreword, it is a timeless guide.

Soros = great mind, terrible writer
By A Customer
Anyone who has had as much success as Soros must be doing something right, so I respect his mind. Unfortunately, he is a terrible writer. He could take ten pages explaining why 2 + 2 = 4.
Here's an example:
"[the shoelace theory]...can be interpreted as a synthesis of Hegel's dialectic of ideas and Marx's dialectical materialism. Instead of either thoughts or material conditions evolving in a dialectic fashion on their own, it is the interplay between the two that produces a dialectic process."
This passage is a microcosm of the entire book: he makes a valid point, but it's not a particularly significant or difficult point. The only difficulty is in parsing his turgid language. I sense he is a great investor who wants to be considered a great thinker, and he believes that in order to accomplish this he has to use big words to express his theories.
Soros's widely praised theory of reflexivity is a valuable contribution, but he doesn't need 400 pages to convey it. I didn't read this book expecting a "how to make money in the stock market" tutorial, but I did expect to gain a better insight into how the markets function. I did not get that.
Don't waste your time.

Fluff
By Brian Case
"I Know What You're Thinking" is Oprah material. There is nothing wrong with that, particularly if you like page after page of vignettes and lots of quizzes where the first option is always the "right" one. Talk-shows is what the author does, and her book reflects that vocation far, far more than it does her doctoral degrees. Even the testimonials on the back cover are by people who have absolutely no professional credentials in the field she writes about.
For those times when you simply want something very light and glib to pass the time, this book will do fine. But if you are serious about the vocalization and kinestics (body language) fields, leave this one on the shelf.
(I found "Signals" by Allan Pease probably the best on this subject so far in my studies, though not as easy a read. Similarly Gordon Wainwright's "Body Language" is quite good, though his exercises are a bit annoying. Finally, R. Don Steele's self published "Body Language Secrets" has some insights if you can stand his arrogant and patronizing style.)

this is a good book, but it isn't the full story
By Haseeb
In preparation for a speech I was about to give for Toastmasters, I was looking for Desmond Morris's famous book "Manwatching". Instead of finding "Manwatching", I found this one and decided to check it out. My first observation on this book was that it looked too watered down as if a bunch of little tid bits of information were just placed in a book and listed. After reading further into the content however, I was really impressed. To me, it really doesn't matter if the author has two PhDs. The important thing is the content and how it's presented.

For a person who has two PhDs, Lillian Glass sure does write in a simple and easy to understand style. A teenager or preteen can understand the information in this book which is good. On the other hand however, I think in an effort to be less scholarly she tends to oversimplify things. For example... she writes in her book that rubbing or scratching the nose is a sign that the person is being deceptive or lying. This is not always the case however. Rubbing or scratching the nose can mean that the person is unsure of something or that he/she is under a great deal of stress. There are other things contained in this book that I would strongly suggest that people be very careful about. Don't jump to conclusions based on one or two little gestures... give it some time and study a person before jumping to conclusions. Use the code the author suggests (speech, voice, body, face). If you are really serious about becoming an expert in detecting lies and reading people, I would also suggest that you get the book "Conquering Deception" by Jeff Nance.

reading this book
By Charles Sinclair
Buying this book is a waste of money. Reading this book is a waste of time. The author is evidently narcissitic. The author is not shy about dropping names of the famous people she has treated. All the examples are of famous and affluent people she knows. The thoughts are only partially developed. She begins a subject and leaves you hanging. The chapters are very generic and things you already know. The book is an advertisement for herself and at the back she has a full page devoted to contacting her to do business with her. Your money and time would be well spent looking elsewhere for help on this subject.

Written by one of the world’s masters of architectural lighting design, Interior Lighting for Designers, Fourth Edition clearly and concisely describes the same steps in the lighting design process that a professional follows in practice.

Working from the premise that lighting design is a rational process, author Gary Gordon provides a solid conceptual foundation based on the conviction that the lighting condition of interiors has enormous emotional impact on people. With an emphasis on designing light, tools and techniques for every phase of his process are presented as a means to achieve the optimal design.

New features in this edition include:

  • Thorough examinations of the latest advances in lighting technology and practice
  • The newest light sources, fixtures, and systems
  • More than 250 illustrations, photographs, and color plates

Learn the importance of how objects and surfaces receive light–Gary Gordon’s guiding principle–and develop the skills to design comfortable environments that encourage productivity and well-being, without an overt display of lighting technique.

Brimming with theory and technical information, Interior Lighting for Designers, Fourth Edition is an invaluable reference for both students and design professionals.

Not Good Introductory Textbook Material
By A reader
This is a required book for an introductory lighting class I'm taking. Since we are solely relying on this book and it isn't supplemented with lecture material, I find that, without familiarity with lighting terminology and concepts, it is very difficult to understand -- very cryptic with the seemingly overused language of the field. While the author may be very knowledgeable, I feel the book is not very well written and the target audience is, perhaps, not intended to be, essentially, the layman. I don't find the organization of ideas and concepts to be clearly laid out or communicated well and, as they unfold, and I come to understand what the author is trying to say, wonder why it was made so difficult -- is that all he means, geesh and why didn't he tell me that earlier. It would be easier to understand the general concept of things first, even in plain English perhaps, and then go on to a more technical description to learn the language of the field and get the details. Just seems to make simple things very complicated, especially with the language, flow of ideas, and phrasing.

I also find a lot of the graphic figures and photo examples need some clarification or more details. A picture's supposed to be worth a thousand words, not be cryptic and time-consuming to understand.

Sorry, I would not recommend this for students who are not primed first. Especially the younger ones.

Very good book for novices.
By A Customer
The book begins with an inspirational and somewhat simplistic insight into lighting design. Simply as a study of lighting contrasts. While this is a very important aspect of LD, it is by far one of many concepts a professional must use. The book refers to many technical aspects of lighting without giving any "meat" or more in depth information, which I would have enjoyed. If you are new to LD or are an architect or engineer who has little experience with lighting, it is a very good lauching point. If you are technically knowledgable about lighting and want some inspiration, read chapter 1 and the last chapter on Design for concepts

Great book cover design....content lacking
By solid gold
if you looking for a book that is enagaging and allows you to turn the pages, forget this book. The picture depictions are in black and white and the material itself is very technical. Someone getting a "masters degree" in design might find it useful but not someone who wants to learn a thing or two about interior ligting....

sending it back I hope i dont have to pay for the shipping.

I am very afraid
By A Customer
In 1990 VCH Publishers, New York, etc. had published a book which
is apparently the same, as this book: R.D. Rogers, "Computational
Chemistry Using the P.C.", although now there is the name of
another publisher. Some two years later I was asked by one of the
scientific journals in the field to write a review about it.
However, from not very clear reasons (or too clear ones: the
publisher of the book and of the journal were the same) it was
not printed there. Finally, my book review appeared in a special
issue devoted to mathematical and computational chemistry of the
journal Croatica Chemica Acta (vol. 66, issue 1, pp A1-A2).
I wish not repeat all my criticism expressed there - there were
serious problems with the basic notions of quantum mechanics and
even freshman's math - only quote my conclusion:

"Keep it out of reach of the students".

From the Publisher
A practical, engineering book discussing the most modern and general techniques for designing analog integrated circuits which are not digital (excluding computer circuits). Covers the basics of the devices, manufacturing technology, design procedures, shortcuts, and analytic techniques. Includes examples and illustrations of the best current practice.

From the Inside Flap
The recent years have brought about a rapid evolution and advancement in analog integrated circuit technology. Reflecting these developments in both content and organization, this book offers the practicing engineer the most up-to-date treatment of the fundamental design principles, capabilities, and applications of monolithic integrated circuits. Throughout the volume, lengthy and detailed mathematical derivations are avoided wherever possible. Instead, the emphasis is squarely on the end result, the basic design philosophy leading up to it, and the underlying assumptions and trade-offs. Numerous examples illustrate the most effective modern practices and workable short-cuts. The first section of the book (chapters 1–3) familiarizes the reader with the physical structures, advantages, and limitations of monolithic components. Reviewed are the basic "tools" of analog IC design and fabrication—process technology, IC components, and the chip layout. Chapters 4–6 cover the basic "building blocks" or sub-circuits of analog IC design. Included here is a discussion of the use of MOS technology in analog and combined analog/digital LSI design. The final and main section, chapters 7–15, covers the entire field of analog integrated circuits by dividing them into functional categories and then examining each of these circuit classes separately. Individual chapters discuss operational amplifiers, wideband amplifiers, multipliers and modulators, oscillators and timers, voltage regulators, phase-locked loops, IC filters, and data conversion circuits. Here, particular emphasis is placed on recent developments in the field of analog circuits, especially in the areas of switched-capacitor filters, switching regulators, voltage-controlled oscillators, and high-resolution data conversion circuits. Bipolar and Mos Analog Integrated Circuit Design is an equally valuable reference for the IC designer and user alike. For the analog IC designer, it provides rigorous guidelines and examples, while for the user, it offers a detailed analysis of the various classes of circuits, their design philosophy, as well as their capabilities and limitations. When preceded by courses on solid-state circuits and semiconductor devices, this book will also make an excellent text for graduate-level courses on analog integrated circuits.

From the Back Cover
The Wiley Classics Library consists of selected books that have become recognized classics in their respective fields. With these new unabridged and inexpensive editions, Wiley hopes to extend the life of these important works by making them available to future generations of mathematicians and scientists.

Bipolar and MOS Analog Integrated Circuit Design

The book has all the basic building blocks that you need to know for DSP design or a transceiver design. I found the sections on clock recovery (e.g. PLL) and filtering (e.g. switched-capacitor filters) particularly useful. Each section consists of the fundamental theories, explanations of the circuit building blocks, and design procedures/examples. In addition, many of the background theories in circuit designs such as OPAMPS, bias circuits, and basic gain stages etc. can be found in the book as very good basic references. Overall it's one of the must have book for analog circuit designers.

By A Customer
I ran into another book by Alan B. Grebene when I was in the library. I immediately understood that I have found a real treasure. Next day I ordered the newest book by Grebene. Even though it is a 1984 book, it describes all the important building blocks of analog electronics with great insight and lots of knowledge.

Analog Gem

Its the single most complete treatment of BJT integrated circuits, that you will ever get in modern text books of today. It reminded me of Shilling and Taub 30 years old classic on Switching Circuit Design. A total encyclopedia of all things analog, but a comprehensive look on switching circuits.

""Now the world can share the life of this great man. In its intimate detail, this is a fascinating story that serves as a valuable introduction to the people of a country so important to us today.""-Walter Cronkite
""A fascinating look at China from the point of view of an American medical missionary, this absorbing life of a quiet hero rings with authenticity and sheds light on the turbulent years from the late 1800s to 1932 that will be a revelation for most Western readers.""-Adeline Yen Mah, author of Falling Leaves
""This is a proud man's story of a father who lived a life of a medical missionary in China for forty years-a life of service, sacrifice, joy, and fulfillment. The pages turn easily and quickly with humor, care, and love. It's a jewel of a book that will remain with you forever.""-Jim Lehrer, The News Hour
""A small gem. Edward Bliss embarked, against great odds, on a remarkable range of activities aimed at improving the livelihood of common people. He was a veritable one-man Peace Corps. His is an inspiring story that warms the heart and enriches the soul.""-H. T. Huang, author of Science and Civilization in China
""It took three years for Edward Bliss, M.D., to ascend the Min River in a convoy of three river junks in 1893, averaging fourteen miles a day. This was his first trip to Shaowu, which became his home for forty-two years, a tumultuous and dangerous time and place. His son tells the story of his father's life and work in fascinating detail, drawing on a trove of letters and extensive interviews with his father.""-Donald MacInnis, former Methodist missionary and China Program Director, National Council of Churches/USA

"When you were so sick in infancy, and there was little hope of your recovery, did I not earnestly pray that the Lord would spare your life that you might live for His glory," wrote the devout Emily Lydston Bliss in 1891 to her oldest son and the author's father, Edward, upon hearing that he had chosen to become a missionary doctor in China. Relying on letters from and conversations with his father and others, as well as his own recollections of living in China as the son of two missionaries, Bliss offers a lovely account of his father's lifelong devotion to China and its people. The author perfectly balances an objective description of his father's contributions as a physician and Christian missionary with a genuine warmth and respect for him. As a backdrop to the primary story of his father's work, Bliss describes the larger sociopolitical events taking place both in China and around the world--recalling that his father once described himself and his fellow American missionaries as "the first anti-isolationists." Bliss senior suffered bouts of malaria, plagues and floods, but it would only be in the wake of Mao's rise to power that Edward would leave China. Bliss succeeds beautifully in painting a private view of a transformative period in world history through the eyes of one man. Readers will recognize Bliss's name from his long and distinguished career in broadcast journalism, which will contribute to sales of this excellent book.

From Booklist
Desiring to lead a helpful life, Edward Bliss Sr. learned medicine and applied for nonpreaching missionary service in China. Thus began the 40 fascinating and varied years that his son lovingly details, drawing on a variety of records and manuscripts and many interviews to make his father's biography an enjoyable depiction of Chinese life. Most of Dr. Bliss' time was spent in and around the city of Shaowu in southeast China. He learned the language; traveled a wide area by boat, train, mule, and on foot; and discovered how his patients lived and thought as well as how to treat and even prevent some of their medical problems. He built clinics and hospitals, several of them more than once because of political, military, and flood problems; established herds of milk cows; and did remarkable practical and research work on fighting rinderpest, a destructive cattle disease. His courtship of his wife, May, conducted in part by building a tennis court, and their long, mutually supportive, productive marriage are other noteworthy achievements. William Beatty

A pioneer missionary doctor in China: a true adventure tale
By Donald
"Beyond the Stone Arches" is the gripping story of a pioneer missionary doctor who served for four decades in a mission station deep in the interior of Fujian province. Each chapter could stand alone, for the scene changes from Imperial China to the shaky, new Republic in 1911, to civil wars, banditry, floods, plague and cholera epidemics - but through it all, Edward Bliss, Jr. tells the story of his father's daily work, his love for China and its people, his ventures such as raising milk cows so children could have milk, and his courage in the face of danger from Communist guerrillas, bandit gangs and rampant warlords. The book reads like an autobiography, for the author draws heavily on his own extensive interviews with his father and his father's letters, plus the author's own memories of childhood in pre-modern China. This is not a stereotype "missionary book!"

beautifully realized
By Leland
This is a wonderfully written account of a missionary's life in early 20th century China. Both educational and entertaining. Well worth the reader's time. Ed Bliss does the subject exquisite justice.

Beautiful tribute to a remarkable missionary doctor by his gifted-writer son
By Char
What a well-told story, wonder-filled and satisfying. It wasn't at all "dry" as I was expecting it to be. From the first chapter onward, I was surprised to find myself fully absorbed in the book, receiving the information in it eagerly, reacting to its anecdotes with alternate chuckles and tears. I soon began to wonder "Who is this author, this son of Dr. Edward Bliss, that he writes so WELL?" So, I read inside the book jacket more carefully than I had done at first and also looked up Edward Bliss Jr. on-line. I found out that Edward Jr., who died in 2002 at the age of 90, just a year after having published this book, was a doctor himself. He was best known however as a highly-awarded journalist and broadcaster who wrote for Edward R. Murrow and was a CBS news editor for Walter Cronkite. He founded a broadcast journalism program at American University. No wonder his writing was simple, vivid, and contained some imaginative metaphors.

[For instance, he is writing about the unusual weather that preceded a typhoon and remarks: "Overhead, the sky was an inverted bowl of porcelain, shimmering hot." Some other passages among those that I couldn't help noticing as special included: "Black-tiled houses stuck their backsides over the water. Boats nudged the waterfront like hungry piglets." Or, "Masts, spars, pumps, windlasses--even figureheads--were Newburyport-made. And many of them tasted salt from the China Sea." Or, "He would not see his father again. On the train window the raindrops ran down like tears." And there are more nice examples that you may want to discover for yourself...]

Besides being glad to learn about the adventurous but useful and down-to-earth life in Faith of Dr. Edward Bliss, I was moved by the brief descriptive passages that recreated marvelous Chinese landscapes and ancient townscapes. I've been wondering why I experienced as so evocative the description (and dim photo) of the Stone Archways outside of Shaowu (in Fujian Province rather near Fuzhou). Maybe, it was because they stood symbolically for the entrance of Dr. Bliss into his vocation in China: --- "No one met him on the road. He had the way all to himself as in a dream, and when he came to a succession of great stone arches, he could stop and examine them without self-consciousness. They were very old and covered with strange inscriptions. The oldness and strangeness stirred him. He was walking toward a city that was standing in the days of the Mongol conqueror Genghis Kahn and where, he knew, a mission established by modern-day apostles had scarcely begun its work."

I thought while reading about the Stone gate, and often throughout the story, how I would have loved to live in an ancient walled city! It occurred to me that the details of "walls," architecture, plants, and other aspects of living-- for instance, the low-slung Chinese tiled roofs, the colors and kinds of cut flowers and artwork hung in missionaries' homes, the fabric of a missionary woman's wedding dress, the very tall bamboo forests that resemble cathedrals-- are all glimpses of Chinese missionary life that readers don't usually encounter in stories that focus so often upon the crux of hardships and conflicts they endured.

I bought this book because I'm doing research into 19th century Chinese missions for reasons of genealogical interest, and the book turns out to provide me with lots of detailed information of just the sort I'm looking for about medical missionary life in particular. (Some material here about malaria in humans and rinderpest in cattle could be informative even to experts.) But, beyond that, I'm very glad I've experienced reading it because it is just a really enjoyable book. And it is a beautiful tribute of a gifted son for his quite remarkable father.

One of my favorite "chapters" is a brief amusing one about Edward's college days at Yale, 1883-1887. Author Edward Jr. begins by telling how a venerable preacher's wife of the time remarked, famously, "I would rather send my son to hell than to Yale," but how Edward Sr. chose it anyway for his own reasons because it was beyond Boston and because he had heard that teachers from Yale were in demand. Edward loved to walk in those days, which was fortunate since it was necessary for him to walk a great deal during his four undergraduate years at Yale. Using his father's account books of the time as a reference, Edward Jr. reports that Edward Sr. bought "twelve pairs of shoes, not even including gym slippers, and that he had them repaired 13 times!"

Chiefly, the earliest missionaries in Shaowu were Congregationalists, like Bliss, or Anglicans or Methodists. A few pages are devoted to Dr. Bliss's observations about the encounters between Protestant and Catholic missionaries in Shaowu, which were friendly but infrequent. Bliss predicted that the divisions between all the denominations, which were puzzling to the Chinese, would disappear sooner in the East than in the West. Bliss was pleased when several Chinese-led Protestant denominations united in 1927 to form one Church of Christ. The author indicates this was considered to have been "the most comprehensive church union achieved anywhere in the world up to that time."

Dr. Bliss's precipitate, unwilling departure from Shaowu in 1933 in the midst of general pandemonium, when the Red Communist Army was veritably at the gates, was heart-rending to read about. He had loved the Chinese and had served them for 40 years indomitably, determinedly, through sickness, disaster, war, floods, and lesser crises. He thought surely he would be able to return and carry on with his establishment of plans to help the people indefinitely, but he was not.

I found Dr. Bliss amazing because he was so irrepressible and indestructible, rebuilding over and again after overwhelmingly destructive blows to his work.

The closing pages are about the retirement years of Dr. Bliss and his wife in America, both of whom lived way into their 90s. These last glimpses are an intimate, loving and tender mirror reflecting the closing of the full circle of these two outstanding lives.

Despite its length, this review doesn't even BEGIN to provide adequate insight into the richness and readability of this worthwhile biography.

I wish the photographs were of a better quality.
